I would choose the second one, to me it's "no contest"
Why? I feel photography wise, it's the better work..
The first shot:
Beak is out of focus
The main thing that draws you in (the eyes) is unbalanced because of the awkward position of the neck making the overall balance to look off.
The second shot :
Well balanced
Better composition
More pleasing to the eye

Am I correct to assume that I can't use the flash in the HDR mode?
OR would it go off on the first exposure, and give me "highlights" on that exposure?

Hello'
I just purchased my first DSLR, a Canon 70D. I want to know the various ways that I can get various key points in the background out of focus.
I KNOW that I should "read the manual" but right now I'm in Santa Fe for two days, just learning the camera (I just purchased the suggested $29 lesson online from another reader.)
The thing is I want to get some specific style photographs today and tonight,) New Year's Eve..
I have a 18-135mm, 3.5-5.6 lens that may also be causing me to get too sharp a background?

Yes, thanks...
I will add your name to my list of "who to thank and reward" when I become known to the world through the art I will create...
But seeing as your answer was "kinda" like others received previously, your reward might not be as prevalent.. ;)

You can use the HDR Backlight mode through the Scene function or you can use HDR Mode through the shooting menu 4. These allow in-camera HDR, which it does pretty well, but does not offer you any control. You can also do three shots with exposure bracketing and do your own HDR with a program such as Photomatix. Suggestions: (1)Read the manual. (2) Get a Photobert "Cheat-Sheet", and (3) I am enjoying reviewing the functions of my new 70D with an online 5-hour video course at CreativeLive - a smart $29 investment I think: http://www.creativelive.com/courses/fast-start-canon-70d-john-greengo

Thanks, all are really good suggestions...
When I become a famous artist/photographer in the 5 years allotted, I will not forget your help...
