New to dslr photography. Just purchased a Canon 70D camera.

You can use the HDR Backlight mode through the Scene function or you can use HDR Mode through the shooting menu 4. These allow in-camera HDR, which it does pretty well, but does not offer you any control. You can also do three shots with exposure bracketing and do your own HDR with a program such as Photomatix. Suggestions: (1)Read the manual. (2) Get a Photobert "Cheat-Sheet", and (3) I am enjoying reviewing the functions of my new 70D with an online 5-hour video course at CreativeLive - a smart $29 investment I think: http://www.creativelive.com/courses/fast-start-canon-70d-john-greengo

Read the manual first. Bracket your image (page 168 in your manual). Then post process using what software program you have. Gary

Hey, I want in on this. Ummm put the camera on a tripod when at all possible then take 3 exposures. 1 at -2, 1 at normal exp. and 1 at +2. Process in Photmatix Pro. There. I'm in when you make it. :) Name and address to follow
(for the royalty check)

Yes, thanks...
I will add your name to my list of "who to thank and reward" when I become known to the world through the art I will create...
But seeing as your answer was "kinda" like others received previously, your reward might not be as prevalent.. ;)

Am I correct to assume that I can't use the flash in the HDR mode?
OR would it go off on the first exposure, and give me "highlights" on that exposure?

If you decide to use the exposure bracketing and post processing method (recommended), then I would also suggest you put the camera in short burst mode to take all three shots with a single shutter depression. Less risk of camera movement between shots.

That's the 'basic' manual.

The full manual is here:

Or, it should be on the CD you got with the camera.
