Being very new to DSLR and Photoshop, what do you all do to make your portraits really shine? I enlarged photo and cropped with a slight exposure increase and that has been about it. Any other things I should start looking for? Again, you guys have taught me a lot by just reading posts. Thanks.

Thanks CaptainC. Your advice will be well taken and tried since I have Photoshop. I read a lot on this forum and I'm sure trying to learn from you guys even though I still have quite a learning curve to go.

To what size do you want it matted? Not the outside dimensions of the frame, but the length and width of the visible print. With this information, we can offer numerous options.

I'm looking at 24x36 if possible.

Yeah, but. With those pixels, you're going to start losing details if you go bigger than 12 X 16, based on 300 dpi. If you gotta go bigger, whih is going to cost a bunch anyway, consider a canvas print, and there's always someone having a sale.
EDIT: I looked at your previous posts, and if you're planning to blow up your pup, canvas would be good!

I never considered canvas and I would like to go bigger than 16x20 but being new to this I didn't realize that I could possibly lose detail if going bigger. I was thinking about going 24x36 and it will be a dog photo.

Where would you suggest I send a photo if I want to have it resized bigger than 16x20 and framed and matted? It is 4.28MB and dimensions 4928x3264 so would it be okay to resize larger than 16x20? Thanks for your advice.

Great shots! I wish I had taken my camera to work with me. There were some nice rainbows too from the crazy weather we had here in Washington.

I will be interested in what the experienced photographers suggest. According to Bryan Peterson in his book, Understanding Exposure you would go up to the flower you plan on shooting and fill your frame with the flower. If you are shooting in manual, take your exposure setting of the flower filling the frame then step back and refocus on the flower then fire away. I am new to DSLR photography but I'm having a great time shooting in manual.

How about saving photos on a memory stick? Everyone has mentioned the external HDs and now I'm thinking my photos are vulnerable to loss because I have them on a stick. Warning, I'm not tech savvy so please pardon me if this is what some of ya'll are talking about.

I have two Bryan Peterson books and loved them. Understanding Photography is marvelous and Understanding Composition is wonderful too. I read these books and took notes to review when I can't get a photo correctly. Read anything by Peterson and you will learn plenty.

These are great! I have a D3100 and have not been brave enough to go to manual. Working on it, though!

I have a nice little point and shoot Olympus camera and dreamed of a DSLR. So, I found out how to work the little buttons and knobs at least to get me started and told myself that there is no better time like the present.

What Lens / lenses will you be using??

I have the standard kit lens and a nikkor 55-300 that I purchased with the camera. I'm already looking at what some of the really nice lenses can do. But for now I will practice with what I have.

Thanks much! I was hoping for some input from you pros out there. I will try suggestions on different ways to take photos since I'm a rookie. I took the second photo with a bit more background in focus for a Golden Retriever contest where they want to see some landscape.
