It comes highly recommended by many members on UHH.
I have it myself, but haven't had time to read it yet, hopefully I can start on it this coming week or so.

One suggestion I'd like to make: If you get this book, keep a pen or pencil handy, or if you don't want to write in the book, some sticky notes! I hate it when I KNOW I've read something somewhere and then can't find it back!

I have two Bryan Peterson books and loved them. Understanding Photography is marvelous and Understanding Composition is wonderful too. I read these books and took notes to review when I can't get a photo correctly. Read anything by Peterson and you will learn plenty.

If you are wanting to learn to use the Manual setting of your camera, buy the book.

As a beginner, the three things you will need to understand are:

1. aperture or f/stop
2. shutter speed
3. ISO

This book explains, with photos as examples, all of these things.

Best of luck!

I have "Understanding" its very good. And...

I was recommended Ansel Adams/Baker's The New Ansel Adams Photography Series a three book set that has sealed my understanding of photography like nothing I've ever read.

It was published the first time in the early 1980s for $25 each and is not about digital but about light, and the image.

I got it from the library but wanted to mark the pages with my highlighter for faster reference, so I bought the hard bound set used on Amazon for about $50 and now they're mine forever.

I would also suggest going to YouTube and watching some of Bryan's videos, or google "Bryan Peterson" and find other references to his resources. He's an entertaining guy and makes learning fun.

A follow up book to Understanding Exposure is Exposure Solutions also by Bryan Peterson, I highly recommend it.
