Take a look at this lens, will give you 83mm on DX and macro. It is manual focus but check the reviews at B+H. I paid 200 used for mine and use it all the time on my d800e.

Have the lens. Love it. Although DX, it will work on my D700 at 16mm without vignetting. That makes it very useful for me as I have DX and FX bodies.

Yes great at 16mm on FX. Good to know in case you upgrade bodies.

20-120sec will NEVER give you a shot of a moon, the earth rotates too fast for that??

Hello, folks.... my first foray into a forum like this. I'm relatively new to DX photography; about a year back I bought a D5500, which I use nearly all the time with its 18-140MM kit lens. I like the quality and bokeh I get when homing in on my wife's flowers. I also enjoy photographing our non-cooperative cats. Have been thinking about a wide angle lens and ask for people's experiences, preferences, guidance, etc. I wish to remain married, so must limit the cost to less than $1,000. Boss would surely say much less. So, I look forward to advice, posing questions, and maybe every so often throwing in my two cents. Thanks, Lou

Look at the 28-300

28-300mm on a dx body = 42-450mm not so walk around-ish, don't give up the wide angle view.

That's my favorite walk around FX lens but for his D7100 I would go with the DX 18-200 for 1/3 the price. It gives the same angle of view on DX that the 28-300 does on FX.

Nikon 18-200mm (=27-300mm) is the best for "general" walk around. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=nikon+18-200&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma&typedValue=&Top+Nav-Search=
On DX D7100 I would not get a 50mm (=75mm) is to long for that purpose!
For low light and light weight also get the Nikon 35mm 1.8G https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=nikon+35mm+f%2F1.8g&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ps&typedValue=nikon+35
I would not go off brand so resale is easier.
For some other high end choices also good for future FX bodys take a look at the Voigtlander 40mm f2 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/885401-REG/Voigtlander_ba229d_40mm_f_2_0_Ultron_SL.html
and the Zeiss 28mm F2. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/662715-REG/Zeiss_1771_844_28mm_f_2_0_Distagon_T.html

I have come across this lens for sale at around 800-1000. There is very little on YouTube as far as a review. Any comments, good or bad. I will be using this on a Nikon d600. Thanks in advance.

Great lens, fat and a little heavy. I would not pay more than 800 for used on eBay. Most will tell you to get the 24-70 (with VR) and I would agree, especially if you don't have 24mm covered already. That little extra (24mm vs. 28mm) can make a difference.
