Hello, folks.... my first foray into a forum like this. I'm relatively new to DX photography; about a year back I bought a D5500, which I use nearly all the time with its 18-140MM kit lens. I like the quality and bokeh I get when homing in on my wife's flowers. I also enjoy photographing our non-cooperative cats. Have been thinking about a wide angle lens and ask for people's experiences, preferences, guidance, etc. I wish to remain married, so must limit the cost to less than $1,000. Boss would surely say much less. So, I look forward to advice, posing questions, and maybe every so often throwing in my two cents. Thanks, Lou
I have a Tokina 11-20mm lens that I like very much. It will fit easily into your budget. Just one of many to consider. I also have an 8mm Rokinon that is my resident fish-eye lens that I really have a lot of fun with. You could have both and still stick to your budget. I use both on a d7200.
Oh, by the way, welcome to the forum.
Thanks, Wayne.... the Tokina is one I've been reading about....good things about. Don't think I'm interested in going as far down as 8MM... (that's like 12mm by comparison to 35 mm, yes?)...but I'll read on it. Generally, I begin the home "discussion" well ahead of time... and sometimes even eventually meet with some success! Thanks again.
Welcome to the Forum, Lou !! I am in the same boat, looking for a good super wide for my D300s and D7100, so I will be following your string closely. Take Care !!

You do not need to limit your search to DX lenses, FX lenses will work great on a DX camera. That said, the Nikkor 35mm and 50mm lenses are great lenses for general wide angle use. To go smaller that that be careful that you do not get a fish eye lens, unless that is what you are looking for. a lot of the 15mm and lower create a fish eye effect that is only useful if that is the look you are going for in your photo.
Don't forget that the 50mm becomes a 75mm on a DX camera and so on.........!
should have said,...I also have the Nikkor 35 mm 1.8.... most of the time, I'm not needing that fast a lens...and I love to zoom in and out with the 18 -140MM. That said, the Tokina 11-20MM only has slight overlap with the 18-140mm..... what else should I be looking at?

The Tamron 10-24mm lens is made for your crop sensor camera and performs amazingly well on them, New price is only $499 including the 6 year warranty from any authorized dealer.
GREAT lens, but how does it benefit the OP who already has an 18mm zoom lens?

If your looking for a prime lense and not a zoom the Nikon AF-S 28mm f1.8G is a really good wide angle that will serve you well if you upgrade to a full frame camera in the future.
I'll very likely be staying with crop sensor for the foreseeable future. Thanks.
I have the Sigma 10/20mm W/A zoom lens , for use on my Nikon D300. It is as sharp as I need.
