GREAT lens, but how does it benefit the OP who already has an 18mm zoom lens?

My thought as well.

Nikon has 3 lenses (DX) wider than the 18-xxx series.
10-24 variable aperture
12-24 Fixed aperture
and 10.5 Fisheye

Tokina, Sigma, and Tamron have others.
Look for any zooms with the first number less than 18.
I find the 10-24 useful, the fisheye is a nice specialty lens.
the 12-24 is outside my budget.

My favorite (and I've tried most of them) is the Sigma 8-16.

Hello, folks.... my first foray into a forum like this. I'm relatively new to DX photography; about a year back I bought a D5500, which I use nearly all the time with its 18-140MM kit lens. I like the quality and bokeh I get when homing in on my wife's flowers. I also enjoy photographing our non-cooperative cats. Have been thinking about a wide angle lens and ask for people's experiences, preferences, guidance, etc. I wish to remain married, so must limit the cost to less than $1,000. Boss would surely say much less. So, I look forward to advice, posing questions, and maybe every so often throwing in my two cents. Thanks, Lou

The Nikon 10-24 is an excellent choice, B&H has it ON SALE for $796.00. The rating on this lens is very very good, I own this lens and on vacation it is my go to lens, actually, I use the 10-24 and the 18-200 combo lenses. You will like the IQ and sharpness of this lens, and, it is currently on sale. Plus, B&H throws in a Luminesque 77mm circular polarizer and UV slim pro filter kit and Nikon lens cloth, NICE.

The 12 mm f:2 Rokinon is inexpensive with very high image quality. It is manual focus.

Lou.
Welcome to the forum! The lens you have 18-140 is a great lens. At 18 it's wide. I would suggest renting several lens till you find just what your looking for.

PS

If Carter (MT Shooter) gives youadvise you can take iot to the bank.

If your looking for a prime lense and not a zoom the Nikon AF-S 28mm f1.8G is a really good wide angle that will serve you well if you upgrade to a full frame camera in the future.

I have the Tamron 12-24mm lens for my Pentax crop sensor camera. It is fun to use but it is big and heavy. We don't have a super convienient Brick and Mortar Store so I had to order it, sight not seen. I strongly suggest trying to find a way to actually hold what you are going to buy or maybe try to rent one.

You didn't specify zoom or prime. Sigma 17-50 or Sigma 35 Art.

Tokina is good. I had one for my DX, 11-16mm, and then got a 16-28mm for my FX.

I have the Sigma 10-20 f/3.5 on a D7100 it takes sharper pictures than my Nikon 18-200 at comparable focal lengths. Love the lens.
