Thanks for all the information. I was thinking since I had a 300 zoom lens on a DX camera which I think gives me 450 I could have taken the shoot from 50 yards away without her knowing but I did the polite thing and asked. Next time I guessing if they are in a public park it’s ok to take candid shoots.
I like taking candid shoots of people are sometimes better than the ones I get if I ask them to pose. Especially when taking photos of my children. The shoots I get when they don’t know they are being photograph seams to give me better results and the pictures seam more natural.

In the USA can you take pictures in public without asking? I always do ask because it’s the thing to do in my opinion. Today at the park a young lady I’m guessing 19 or 20 was dressed up in a angle costume and I thought it was cute but she was being photographed by some one and she was on the other side of the creek. So I asked if I could take a picture from across the creek. I had and 55-300mm so I wasn’t invading her space. But the photographer was kind of rude and said no. So I didn’t. But I did take candid shots of people from afar. I did ask one person if I could take their photo and she said yes. So any way I’m posting a few shots from today. But not of people until I know it’s ok to post.
As far as my question? Do you legally have to ask to take candid shots at a park?

I too have a D7100 and the same macro lens, plus three Nikkor lenses that give me continuous range from 10 mm to 300 mm (35 mm/full frame equivalent of 15 to 450 mm). Just for grins, price out what it would cost to buy a full frame Nikon body and the equivalent lenses. Are you wealthy? Are you planning to make really, really big prints? Are you happy with 26.3 megapixels and a slightly smaller image size? If I were rich I would switch but I'm not and am very happy with the D7100.

I’m not rich by a long shot. But when I bought my camera 2 years ago I got a kit lens NIKON AF S Nikkor 18-140mm 1:3.5 - 5.6 G ED. And every lens I buy I have bought used, with the intention of one day having a full frame camera.

But with what we are discussing here I might be better off sticking with the camera I have and buying DX lens. The lens I have seams to work really well on my D7100 but for the exception of the AL-s lens that I have to manually focus.

List of lens I use with my D7100

Nikon AF Nikkor 28-80mm 1:3.3 - 5.6 G
Nikon AF Micro 60mm 1:2.8
Nikon AF 70-300mm 1:4 5.6 I use a tripod with this one
Nikon AF 50mm 1.8
Nikon 50mm 1.4 AL-s

Buy an 850, an 85mm 1.4, a 105mm 1.4, and a 70-200 2.8 FL.
Then you will only have yourself to blame if the portraits you create are not what you expect.

Of course, the suggestion is tongue-in-cheek; a DX camera with good glass in the hands of an experienced photographer, with post-processing skills will produce admirable images.
Have fun!

I’ve decided to invest in glass. I have a 50mm 1.4 it’s a older lens but I’m having difficulties getting it to focus in manual at 1.4 on my D7100. I found the same lens in a 85mm, it’s a Nikon 85mm f/1.4 AI-s lens
For $380. Will I have the same difficulty with this lens on my D7100. Also the seller said that it had dust inside but will not affect the photos.

First of all I added that to the photo I thought it looked better that way. I’m just learning and appreciate any suggestions.

Which lens would you recommend for portraits?
The one I use is Nikon AF Micro 60mm 1:2.8. I have a Nikon AF Nikkor 28-80mm 1:3.3 - 5.6 G lens which is surprisingly good to be so cheap.

I’ve had my D7100 for 2 years now and I really like the photos I take with it but I’m just now starting to take portraits I’ve always shot landscapes and birds and the D7100 does a great job. But was wondering if I was to upgrade to a FX camera would I gain any benefit over the DX?

When shooting portraits with the D7100 I use a older lens the Nikon AF Micro 60mm 1:2.8 and the photos are good. Would the quality be better with a FX camera?

I’m not a professional just learning as I go. This is a example of the Nikon AF Micro 60mm 1:2.8 with the D7100. Will there be a improvement using a FX over the DX when shooting portraits?

And if so which FX would you recommend?

I’m new at taking photos in manual and I’ve think I’ve learned a lot. But still new at my Nikon D7100. I’ve downloaded lots of app and looked at videos on YouTube and ran across two app I haven’t used yet and was wondering which of these two app will give me the most benefit. So if anyone uses these app would they recommend them? I have a iPhone and iPad.

I’ve used this before a long time ago and it worked really well. I vave taken the dvd I made with it and used hand brake to rip to a file that I could put on a wd mycloud and use my Apple TV to stream them to my tv using a app called Infuse from the App Store.
It was the easiest way to do it at the time and I’m sure it still would work.

Question? I’m new and want to take long exposures of waterfalls and the stars. And what I found was a app called Cascable. Which you can control your camera with. Is there a advantage having a remote or using a app?
