A couple of weeks ago while cleaning out my storage shed (AKA garage), I uncovered some old VHS home movies. I would like to copy them to a DVD or even a flash drive but the convertor I had didn’t send any images to my computer. I purchased a different unit an got the same results. The common denominator is either the VHS player or my W10 PC. Can anyone point me in the right direction as far as trouble shooting this?

Several years ago, we bought a unit at Best Buy that has a VHS player and a DVD player that both records, so you can record the VHS tape to a DVD. Then I can take the DVD and put in my computer and record it to a Flash drive.

I used to have a couple of those converters but I don't think I can make them work anymore with Windows 10. I found that I can record a VHS tape playing with a D-VHS VCR and record via wirefire connection to a Windows 10 machine. This approach works very well.

Roxio has a solution for that. I have been using it for years and it works pretty good... They just came out with a updated version and are discounting it... google them!

Thank you, I might need to go that route.

Those puppies are a bit off budget for me

First have you hooked up VCR to a TV to make sure it is sending out video/audio?

Just talked to a friend, knew he was using something to copy some of his old fishing VHS tapes. Says it works relatively easy, works with Win 10 - paid $79. Here is YouTube I found on it:

Yes, I have viewed the old tapes. (A fun trip down memory lane)
As I said I tried two different convertors and they both just sat there doing nothing. I suspect there's a W10 interface problem but don' know how to trouble shoot it.

Look for something like this. I have this unit, and I still use it for taking off some movies from the DirecTV DVR, obviously in SD, but that doesn't matter much for old movies in 4:3 format.

I actually copied all of my VHS many years ago with a similar GoVideo unit that worked perfectly. If you actually want to edit your movies, you'll have to capture to a computer. It sounds like an issue of finding what will work on a Windows 10 computer.

I think, based on reviews at the time, that the Panasonic was the pinnacle of DVD/VCR recorders. I still use mine for an occasional movie recorded from a broadcast that you can't buy commercially. I seem to recall seeing something similar in Sam's Club a couple of years ago, but the Panasonic models are long discontinued.

Need a lot more information to troubleshoot this problem. Apparently you know you have video out from your player because you can see it on a TV, correct? Is it composite video or S video out from the VCR? Next, give us some information on the converter (make, model) and how it is connected to your Windows 10 computer (USB?). Did it come with a SW application, or are you using something else, and if so what? If the application is storing the digitized image to a file, can you find/see the file? How large is it and how are you viewing the file?

A lot of questions I know, but short of being on-site and seeing the symptoms, anything else is just a blind guess without knowing more detail.

If you just have a few tapes, it will be easier taking them to Costco or some outfit that can do the conversion. Several years ago, I tried converting Super 8 (?) to DVD by playing the camcorder into a capture card in my PC. Was slow and frustrating.

composite video viewable on the TV, tried two converters one by "Honestech" and the other was by Lvozize. I downloaded the latest drivers for each. Connection by USB. Both supplied the SW, The applications do not capture any signal so nothing is stored.
