One other thing I just found. This could demand a thread of its own but lets see what comes up here.

I did not initially see the compression options for RAW files because they were grayed out. I had selected medium for RAW image size, thinking it covered the bit depth and compression. Learned it does not affect bit depth and compression: it truly affects image size only. AND if you do not select large you do not get the options for bit depth and compression.

I’m going for 12 bit compressed. I am a hobby photographer. Although I do post process I doubt I’d ever see a difference.

Here is a comprehensive list of settings I found FYI: https://photographylife.com/recommended-nikon-z7-settings

He uses RAW file terms that the Z7 does not; e.g. “lossless compressed”. The Z7 instead uses image sizes. Although the file sizes look like the old “compressed” etc. I thought the compression algorithms retained image size.

Two new things in my Z7II (upgrade from Z6) are the focus area and image quality settings. I’m interested in your suggestions. Currently:

U1 for wildlife: AFC with Auto Area AF (animals), Medium RAW & F jpeg, shutter release priority, high speed continuous release.

U2 for landscape: AFS, Wide-area AF (S), same image, focus release priority, single release.

U3 for whatever: f7 jpeg.

All in M mode with auto ISO.

I’ve had the 24-200 for some time on my Z6. It replaced the 24-70 that came with the Z6. IMHO image quality is the same and the wider range is very useful.

I was a bit concerned it might show flaws with the greater detail of the Z7II. Appears fine to me.

I also have the Z 14-30. It is a great lens too but so far I haven’t tried with the Z7II. The 24mm end of the 24-200 is wide enough for most outdoor shots. Plus the 24-200 has VR.

I was recently in Idaho, stayed in Driggs and was hiking the Teaton area. One day we mad a driving loop up to Yellowstone via the East side of the Teatons then back on the West side through Wyoming and Idaho. Caught the good light both ways! Idaho has some of the most beautiful scenery in the country.

It does indeed. Thankfully many confuse it with Iowa.

Actually did some of that loop the last few days. Circled from Idaho Falls through Jackson WY. Did snap a few of the Tetons. I’ll post one later on.

Nice thing now is that the crowds have melted away and the weather is awesome. Fire smoke even mostly cleared.

The shutter count on the camera is 500...including the 200 plus I took before checking. So basically as new as it looks.

Seems to take fine images as well.

Thanks to all who contributed.

The one above arrived and fits perfectly. It is a bit of overkill as it is made for two guns, with padding between, and has a couple of nice compartments. I can use the second side for my monopod...which I almost never use. And the compartments for battery chargers etc.

I do not have plans for taking the tripod on trips involving air travel but if I did this case would work nicely. Could flesh it out with clothes.

Beautiful scene. :)

Question did you use a polarizer? The reason I ask, is the sky coloration changes quite a bit from upper left to lower right.

Yes, CP.

But the sky color variation is natural. Elevation here about 7000 ft.

An early image with my new (to me) Nikon Z7 and Z24-200.

Nice work! I am old enough to remember these.

Me too. A guy down the street had one where I grew up in the 50s. We drooled.

I ordered a gun case similar to the one pictured above for my new Bullpup. It seems very high quality. Reasonable price. So I ordered another longer one (42 in) for the tripod with gimbal head. The head fits nicely.

It is actually a two gun case with a padded divider. So I’ll be able to stick other stuff in it; e.g. monopod. It has many nice zippered pockets for stuff too.

Pic of actual one.

My Z7II arrived today as promised by MBP. Looks brand new and functions 100% so far. I know how to check shutter count so will get that done in a bit.

It looks and feels the same as my Z6. My half case fit fine even though it might be a smidge thicker to accommodate second card. It is happy with my Z6 batteries.

My basic settings are the same. Programmed F keys, I menu, and U settings as they were. Need a little more work on My Menu but set first to format…which is what I mostly use it for. Well, almost. The image settings differ. I am using an SD card as primary because I can put it directly into my computers without adapter. The CFb (or xqd…have one of those left also) for backup….which I never use and have little interest in but dislike leaving a slot empty. Wonder if it would refuse to work with only one card as I set it to not work if no card? Do not plan to check.

So it is time to put her to work! Headed out in the RV tomorrow to some places with great potential. Will post some images next week.

More expensive than I remember, adds some weight, but my solution to managing heads and tripods without fuss.

Thanks!

I was not aware of those. Might give it a try.

Snug, but it does fit. (The 48" case is not only longer, it is also a bit wider)

That’s what I need! Thanks.

Mine is right at 42”. I’ll get 45 if I can.
