I agree with checking specific airlines, and the SW reference you need is above. As I frequent traveler, the two rules that seem to be universal are

A) You may not check Li-ion batteries in any luggage. They must be removed. This also applies to the new luggage that has a battery and charger built in. Must be ejected.

B) in your carry-on, any loose batteries must have their contacts covered so they cannot short out. I keep the original battery end covers for my camera batteries, ensure I have all other batteries such that they can not short out, and put the whole thing in a big ziplock that can be pulled out separately for TSA to inspect and save time.

There are a couple of solutions of a small stand alone piece of hardware (stand alone SSD) that will do just what you want, including being able to transfer via wi-if to the cloud. Has a normal SD slot for the transfer from the card.

If you keep the cards (which I would recommend as another level of backup), then you have those, the SSD, and the pictures on the cloud, and can sleep easily each day of your trip

Suggest you search the archives here for “backup traveling”. And, some of the fine folks here with better memories than I will undoubtedly chime in.

Have fun

I would suggest posting the shutter count. pretty well a must have piece of data to sell here.

I always have a camera with me too and my husband used to say the same thing. For years, he'd say "Don't ask, I'm not stopping for you to take pictures of some cute little duck or horses or ANYTHING." Then one day he said "if you see anything you want to take pictures of, let me know." I asked what brought that on and he said "Well you never know when there may come a day that I wish I had a chance to do that for you."

I can relate to the OP. Have had LASIK in the past. Distance is still good, but I need +2 readers. Pulling these on or off if don’t need distance glasses is a pain, and adjusting the diopter is the only practical (at least for me, YMMV) as the camera is always going up/down while shooting sports. For this reason I don’t use the LCD except at the beginning of a shoot to check for blinkies, etc.

I also did try glasses and found them to uncomfortable and distracting as it kept my eye further away

Glas to know that as, or if, I need it, can extend the adjustment. There will come a time where the standard may not be enough adjustment. Hopefully I am still shooting then. 😀

As a life long Scout whom did, in fact, earn his photography merit badge back in the day, I take severe offense at this whole thread……

Just kidding. There is a requirement for a series of pictures demonstrating different techniques/effects (eg same subject a two different DOF), and you do have to explain and demonstrate PP software (so more than SOOC is required), but nothing else on the list nor additional suggestions is in fact required

I would add one more to the list just for us as it relates to UHH threads - people whom cannot create a descriptive thread title (for sale or need help or which lens being just a few recent examples). 🤪

I sometimes switch to DX mode with my 70/210 lens for even more reach. It beats buying a new lens.

But isn’t this a false choice? In DX mode on a FX camera (or extended crop mode on my DX camera), is not the camera just using the center of the sensor, decreasing FOV/extending reach, by just throwing the outer pixels away. Would this not be just the same if you cropped in PP?

The only advantage I can see is that the file sizes would be smaller and write quicker to the card, which would clear the buffer faster

Is my understanding incorrect?

Hi

1). Contact Thomas902 and Jules Kearney, two of the preeminent photographers we have for soccer. Both do amazing work. I do believe Thomas shoots a prime lens like the 400 or 500, but don’t remember if he is shooting on a FX or DX body. That crop factor would make a big difference. The prime gives him tack sharp images. Jules primarily shoots a D500 and switches between two zoom lens depending on the field setup

You may also want to search for their work in the sports section. Both are very generous in that they almost always post the equipment and settings they use. Will give you an idea

2) where and how close you will be may make your decision, and you may not know that and/or it may change pitch to pitch. Be prepared to be flexible. Like the idea of a monopod as (especially with the longer lenses) it will get heavy as the day wears on. Tripod is a definite no-go

3) as you are considering renting a lens for this big trip, consider renting a 2nd body as well. I would say rent a D500, but if different than current, you don’t want something whose controls you don’t know well, so more inclined to say rent whatever you have and put the 70-200 on it. If you do, would more likely go for the longer lens (see DX/fx comment earlier). Not only will you then have a longer lens but it gives you a closer-in lens that can be set for non-action shots (again, see Jules work - he has a remarkable eye for capturing those “human” moments).

Finally, don’t try to shot every minute of every game. Across the tourney, you will get enough shots to get some good ones, but you will also be able to just watch her play

Have fun, and post some of your work when back. Good luck

First, I absolutely recommend waiting until you speak with OWL. They were incredibly helpful on my older MAC when I needed a docking station and working through a thunderbolt rev level compatibility issue. They are legendary when it comes to non-dealer Apple hardware support

Please update us on your journey as it progresses. While not a professional, and therefore not needing massively redundant systems with 100% uptime, I do need to do a better job with onsite and offsite (cloud?) backup of critical files and my (amateur) photo file library. Just want not to lose the files to a catastrophic event or ransomware attack.

As it relates directly to the topic of better backup system, is it possible to hang a RAID type system off of a cable modem/wifi hub (one that supports several different wifi networks), have that be a central household backup server for the 6 computers (mix of apple and windows) for the family, and then have a piece of sofware that regularly backs that up to the cloud (or other offsite secure storage)? I would like to find a way to protect the whole household at once, but not be physically lugging hardware in/out of the house.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I think this is close enough to the OP’s desire for better backup to be relevant
