Tony, thank you for your response. At the moment, weight isn’t an issue for me, but can certainly see that could come into play in the future.

I’m looking to purchase a Nikon 24-70 f/2.8G to use with my D850. I’ve heard the the image quality of the VR version of this lens is not as good as the non-VR. I have no idea whether or not this is true so, asking here. I’d appreciate any feedback back from the group. I have also considered the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 G2. The slightly shorter length and image stabilization is attractive to me, but having a hard time making a decision.

I use a Sirui R 5214Xl carbon fiber tripod. It’s a beefy mother and easily provides a stable platform whit my D850 and 200-500. I haven’t used it in that strong of winds though. It is in your price range.

Nikon D850, saving for either the 500mm f4 or 600mm f4. So, have to make due with one camera body.

Thanks for everyone’s input. My 77mm filters are all higher quality and felt I’d get more use from them using step up rings. So far I haven’t had any issues removing them, but try not to over tighten them.

With the exception of my Nikon 200-500, the remainder of my lenses are 77mm. I have a couple ND filters as well as a Polarizing filter, all 77mm. With recently purchasing a 35mm f1.4, Nikon lens, I’m considering buying a 66mm to 77mm step up ring to allow me to use my existing filters. Not having experience with step up rings, is there a trade off in image quality or other considerations other than not being able to use the lens hood that came with the lens?
Thanks!

No worries, I had the Nikon 14-24 and sold it for the Tamron. I will admit I liked the “feel” of the Nikon compared to the Tamrom. I didn’t think I’d lose much giving up 1mm on the low end, but thought the 6mm on the higher end may provide some extra versatility . I’m in no hurry to sell it, pm me if you change your mind.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

Not Nikon, but I have a Tamron 15-30mm f2.8 i’m considering selling. I purchased it new, it’s a US version and in mint condition, could easily pass for new. I used it once. I realize you’re looking for the Nikon, but thought I’d mention it. Would like to get $730.00 for it. If you’re interested PM me and will send photos.

I own the latest version of the Nikon 24-120 f4. I have been extremely happy with the image quality of this lens. An f4 lens on today's Nikon camera's (especially the D850) is no longer an issue. An f4 lens can be shot at a higher ISO on your D850 with NO problems. As a result of today's camera's to handle higher ISO's, f2.8 lens does not have the advantage over a f4's as it once did because Nikon camera bodies do a much better job at higher ISO's than they used to.
I love this site and love when folks downgrade a Nikon lens over a Tamron. It tells me they know little about photography. The quality that a lens delivers is largely due to the experience and level of professionalism displayed by the photographer, not the lens, especially if we are talking about a gold ring lens like the Nikon 24-120. Anyone who says they are not pleased with that lens simply does not know how to shoot. End of story.
My advice, save your money for a nice new Nikon 70-200 2.8 or, even better, the older version of the Nikon 24-70 2.8 G. There is a reason many wedding photographers use this as a go to lens for most of their shots.
Look at this Nikon 24-70 g lens, mint in the box off ebay, what a deal, and best of all, it is a Nikon and it won't let you down.

Thanks for the feedback. The 24-120 is my most often used lens. Having recently move from a D810 to the D850, it may be that the D850 is a little less forgiving by magnifying mistakes made by me. I prefer to stick with in my case, Nikon glass. Some of the reviews I’ve read on 3rd party lenses have been quite good. While saving a few dollars is nice, when spread out over several years it becomes less of a factor for me. And, I’d suspect manufacturer lenses have a higher resale value over comparable 3rd party lenses. That being said, most of the reviews on the Tamron 24-70 G2 have been quite good. The Nikon 24-70 g lens may be a viable option, though I’m spoiled and like my VR at times.
Thanks again.

It happens all the time. But the media usually isn’t interested in reporting such things. An old media truth is, “If it bleeds, it leads!”

Thank you. I've liked the 24-120 since using one a couple of years ago.
However while waiting for your response I took the Google Express to DxO. They didn't have both lenses on a D850 but they did have them on a D810 and it looks like, according to their tests, that the Tamron would be a better choice.
So,RonM12 check DxO and then maybe rent the Tamron just to be sure

Thanks for your feedback. It wouldn’t hurt to rent the Tamron like you mentioned. I have some time as B&H photo will have the $100.00 discount on the Tamron until 1/5/19

I’m know there are a couple variations of Nikon’s 24-120 lens. I have the latest generation for use on my D850. I’m considering switching to the Tamron 24-70 G2 for a couple reasons, the extra f stops, but most importantly, image quality. Has anyone switched from Nikons 24-120 to the Tamron 24-70,and if so was it a good move? I’m less concerned about the lower focal length associated with the Tamron. Thanks!

Brian, my suggestion is regardless of reading your intent or timing of shootings, paying attention to backgrounds, angles of the wall, focusing on the model, etc. will still serve you well. Although you may not wish to take portraits or "posed" photos I am assuming you are also not wishing to just take snapshots and hope all comes out well. Stay at it - a good start idea.

You make some good points about backgrounds and distractions, not to mention some cropping issues that came up in a second set of pictures I posted the other day. The “model” is my significant other, while the intent is to capture “in the moment “ images around our home, I totally get the snapshot and hope things turn out. Thanks for the feedback.
