Where did you buy it and why are you selling it?

I will be traveling to Scottsdale Arizona next week for a few days looking for suggestions of areas I might try to shoot at. I prefer landscape, nature, and wildlife. thank you for suggestions.

No. 1 place to visit is the Desert Botanical Garden and the Butterfly Pavilion inside the DBG (free with DBG admission -- you can spend several hours in that one spot alone with your camera, which I do at least twice a year). In addition, there's plenty of nature and wildlife subjects to shoot throughout the Garden -- you can spend anywhere from an hour to all day there. The DBG borders South Scottsdale on the north and east and borders the Phoenix Zoo on the south. Right now there's a fantastic light and sound experience, "Electric Desert" going on and various musical groups with shows in the evenings inside the DBG throughout December. If you have time to take in only one thing, be sure it's the DBG.

And, if you're into photographing (or just watching) people (aka "wildlife") the Waterfront/5th Avenue area in central Scottsdale is a great place to just hang out on one or more of the area's relaxing restaurant patios for happy hour and everything from Mexican, Spanish, Italian, Continental and Pacific Rim cuisine -- my favorites are Thirsty Lion (best happy hour in Scottsdale), Barrio Queen, Tapas Papas Frita and Olive & Ivy. Just a couple of blocks away in Old Town is the Scottsdale Civic Mall, home to AZ88 (best outside patio and largest martinis in Scottsdale) and the famous "LOVE" sculpture. So, you only have to drive (or walk depending on where you're staying) just a few blocks to find some great photo venues (somebody mentioned the Grand Canyon, but that's a 5-hour drive each way).

For reasons I won't go into here I've gone from a Mac laptop to a well equipped PC.
I'm trying to find an editor similar to the Apple iPhoto. The editor that comes with OSX.

Don't want to get into Photoshop, but want to be able to Sharpen, control Highlights, Shadows, Color, Contrast, Intensity, Redeye, etc.
Photoshop is a little too involved, and expensive for my needs. Looked at Gimp, too involved.

Is there anything out there?

ACDSee -- several programs available.

Coronado Island is the first place we go and stay -- be sure to check out the Del (Hotel del Coronado) for drinks or lunch on the patio.

Has any one used this site and is it worth while ? Any help appreciate, thanks

Take a look at Zenfolio instead. I used to use SmugMug but switched to ZF because it's a lot easier to set up and customize and has a more professional, artistic look and feel. Pricing is about the same, although ZF used to be a little cheaper than SM but with similar features with 3 levels of subscriptions.

Check out what's for sale on ebay -- I have bought 4 Pentax DSLRs (K-10, K-20, K-7 and K-5) and 1 Pentax film SLR on ebay all with the following parameters: one owner, very low shutter count (1,500 to 9,000), and no cosmetic dings and I always ask the seller enough questions to make sure he/she are legitimate and why they are selling. I have never been disappointed and always got great cameras at a fraction of the cost.

I wish someone would answer the question asked, I’m in the process of selecting photos which will have non-standard formats.

All of the companies listed in other posts allow you to resize photos to any size you want even if you use their templates. Normally, you just click on an edge and drag it to fit any of your photos.

If your book is less than 110 pages, Shutterfly is excellent -- I have had them do several photo books and they're always great.

Be very careful because if you do a gallery wrap where the picture is stretched and can be seen on the edges you will loose a couple of inches of your image when they wrap it. If you take a 16x20 image and have them do a 16x20 canvas with a gallery wrap they will actually make it an inch bigger all around so the face of the canvas will be the 16x20 and the extra will wrap around the edges. This will wrap some of the image around to the edge and may wrap the top, bottom, and side of the image around the edge possibly cutting off someones head or feet or maybe eliminate someone from either end of the group by wrapping them around the edge. Make sure you see a preview of what it will look like BEFORE YOU ORDER IT!!!!!

Good advice. However, there are canvas printers who offer gallery wraps that do not cut off the edges and print the full image on the face of the canvas with black, white or whatever color you choose for the edges, or "pixel wrap "edges that duplicate the pixels of the image on the edges -- you just have to check out what type of wraps the provider offers. The other alternative is to put a border on the image yourself before submitting it for printing. The other thing you need to check out is what stretcher frame thickness the provider offers. If you are not going to put the canvas in an outside frame (which I don't), I suggest using 1-1/2 inch thick stretcher frames as opposed to 3/4 inch because they look better and also prevent warping. Quality-wise, all of the different providers I have used are good, although I have had to have several reprinted because of problems with production issues, but they have always reprinted at no charge (for both reprinting and shipping with no need to return unsatisfactory canvases) so I end up with great-looking canvases.

As for best prices, check providers' specials and discounts and Groupon because they always have great discounts for a number of canvas printers -- I have done many canvases from multiple vendors using Groupons and the prices are substantially less than either Costco's or Sam's Club's. Another company to check out is Picaboo as they are always offering great discounts for pre-purchased coupons.

I don't print at all, I give it all to Costco. My prints come out somewhat darker than I see them on my monitor. I've heard about monitor calibration but I thought that was mainly for color correction. Do I need to calibrate my monitor? I also belong to Bay Photo but I haven't printed with them yet.

Thanks,

The simplest, quickest and cheapest fix is to just turn down the brightness on your monitor and then adjust your images accordingly before you send them out for printing. I do a lot of photobooks and that's what I always do to compensate for the difference in lightness/darkness of how an image looks on your computer vs. the printed image. The other quick fix is to tell the printer to make prints about 15% lighter, which is what I do when I have calendars printed at Staples. In any event, Costco will reprint your prints at no cost if you ask them to -- just tell them the prints are too dark and they'll make the proper adjustments.

I am just wondering what people are using to process their photos. For myself I use Lightroom 2 (mostly because I was told to pick something and stick with it) and then Photoshop CS3. Please let me know what you use!...Julian

If you want to know, look at the ton of past discussions on this topic -- no need for yet another one.

Sorry it's been a while since I have posted anything. I would like to get a general census on what you like to use for photo editing. Do you prefer Luminar or Lightroom or a combination of both. I didn't include Photoshop because to me that is pretty much a given ;) Thank you for your opinions on the subject

ACDSee Studio Pro 2018. Why are you considering just Luminar or Lightroom, and no, Photoshop is NOT a given, at least not for that price range.

Nothing. Assuming you have a removable lens DSLR, don't keep lens attached to camera in case they need to do a hand inspection. The TSA x rays will not harm your memory cards, computer hard disk or any other electronic devices.

Since you mention you have a Grandson, you're probably "of an age," as they say, and might get TSA PreCheck assigned when you get your boarding pass. Then it's even easier and you don't have to take off your shoes.

If you have a "removable lens DSLR," DO NOT remove the lens unless you use a body cap because you will get dust on the sensor, and lens caps for both ends of your lens to keep the glass clean, and besides, there's no reason to remove the lens anyway -- just let the camera and lens go through the scanner because as everyone has said, it will not hurt either the camera or lens. Even if you have a film camera, there's still no need to take the lens off, but as others have said, remove the film from the camera, although the experts generally say that the film will not be harmed with just 2 scans (outbound and inbound). As for the TSA PreCheck, you need to pay for that for a 5-year pass -- since this is your 1st time on a plane, you obviously would be wasting your money doing that -- it's designed for those who fly several times a year.
