Quick update....Bought the Tamron 150-600mm absolutely delighted with this lens, great zoom, very good IQ (with practice) Easily hand holdable. I did consider both Sigma variants, but ultimately price and weigh won over Sigma Sports, and couldn't guarantee delivery of Contemporary.

Hi Fergus, the term using it "in anger" this side of the Atlantic simply means, used properly, I'm not angry :) ..The Slimbridge Wetlands are in Gloucestershire England on the banks of River Severn....fourth bird is a Grey crowned Crane.... Thanks for looking at the photo's.

I have three questions. What are you angry about? Where are these wetlands? What is the bird in the fourth photo?

Managed to get out with my Tamron 150-600mm, using it in "anger" for the first time. Pleased with the results and all shots taken hand held, which was a bit challenging but do-able.

Really nice picture, and so lucky to get that close to the eagle. Just picked up a Tamron 150-600mm for my 5d mk3, very impressed with the limited shots I have been able to take so far with the lens.

The weight of the Sigma might be a concern....

I have seen the weight, it certainly is a monster especially to hand hold. As mentioned earlier I am going to see how the C Sigma compares to the Tamron, and make a decision from there.

Here's a different thought for you. Instead of buying the new lens, why not buy the new Canon 7D MII body? Here's my reasoning. It is a crop sensor camera, so your lenses will work, in effect, at 1.6 times their focal length. So, with a 70-200 mm Canon zoom on a 1.4 extender, your range will become 150-450mm. But, here's the big benefit - the 7D MII can shoot at 10 FPS and it's sensor is extremely good in low light. I've heard Scott Kelby compare it to a Canon 1DX in sensor quality. On top of that, the frame is metal and it is weatherproofed like your 5D MIII. The Canon 7D MII is supposed to sell for $1,799 (US), about $200 less than the Sigma 150-600S. Imagine the shots you'll get at 10 FPS!
Here's a different thought for you. Instead of buy... (show quote)

Thanks...... Not sure I can justify another body, but food for thought...

Thanks, all. I think the general consensus is wait for the C version to come out and then compare all the lenses available. I appreciate all your advice/opinions.
Richard.

I tend to agree with you, perhaps wait a while to see how the three new 150-600mm's rate against each other. The S gets a good write up but the C may have similar IQ minus the weather sealing and build quality, also read good things about the Tamron especially since it has has a Canon firmware upgrade. Thanks for your views.

Thanks, I wasn't aware the 1.4x tele would give me AF on the 400mm f/5.6. The big advantage is obviously the zoom with the Sigma and of course OS/VR, which for sport which is big bonus. I currently use my 70-200mm f/4 for matches, but with obvious telephoto limitations. Grateful for your input, much appreciated.
