Been hesitant to upgrade to windows 11 (from windows 10) for fear would cause problems with LIghtroom Classic and Photoshop. Anyone had problems with the conversion?

In the end you probably won't have any choice. Windows 10 will more than likely be now longer supported.

This new format is not very user friendly. Is there a way to see in the old format. Active topic has 7 pages, I don’t think we have the time to browse through 7 page. Help!

-----------
I just load "All Sections" and then the "Main Photography Discussions" sevtion is at the top. Just tap on it and you will only see those posts. I liked it better the old way too, but this method does work.

I thought that I might not care, but I find I do not like the new format at all. It makes it more difficult to just look at the sections I am interested in at the time.

The dark part of my raw files look exceptionally dark. Is there a way to correct for that?

If the histogram shows a lot of dark area, increase your exposure some when you take the shots. Especially if it happens in a lot or most of your shots.

Yea, they are roll film holders. The numbers showing are visible in a small opening and shot the shot number you are taking. The multiple riws/colums of numbers are there because not all cameras put the window to view the shot number in the same place. The numbers are not the same in all of the rows/columns because different cameras used the same film but created different size negatives. For example one camera may produce 2 1/4 by 2 1/4 square negatives and a dufferent brand/model camera may be creating 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 negatives. I also had a 35mm camera that took split frame shots, taking 2 shots in the same space as a single normal 35mm shot so a 36 exposure roll would give you 72 exposures on the split frame camera.

Would anyone be able to tell me where in the menus in the D780 where you would turn off the blinking pictures. I think it's a good thing but most all photos I take when I first view a photo taken in the view finder, parts of the photo are blinking. I want to turn this OFF!

------
The blinkies are there to help you. The blinking areas in the shot are areas being blown out with the exposure settings you are using. You should adjust your exposure down enough to stop the blinking. It is especially important if you are shooting JPG only since you won't have the data available to recover some or all of the blinking areas that you possibly could if shooting RAW. It would be far better to use the warnings and correct the exposure. In the shots, if it is only specular highlights or light sources that are blinking, they are fine.

If you really want them off though, go into you menu and it should be under playback then display or display options where you uncheck the blinkies check box.

I want to order an 11×14 pic And I don' want it cropped could I just order the print that way without cropping or what would the actual size be. Thanks Jim Bianco

-------------

That depends on the aspect ratio of the original photo. At normal photo quality (300 ppi) you would need an image 3300x 4200 ppi. If you don't have that you would need to crop the width to fit the height you have, or you would need need to expand the height so you could use the full width without cropping.

I did a search, and didn't find a definitive answer to my question. So here goes, when you watermark your photos, where do you place the watermark? Top, bottom, center, corner, or where it's out of the main subject of the photo?

--------
I don't watermark my photographs but most watermarks that I see are at the bottom and either to the right or to the left edge. There is no standard way or place to place a watermark so you just put it where ever you you prefer.

Yes, controversial, but I saw these reasons online from Peta Pixel.

1. Handling is not very good on a phone, but a camera is easy to hold, and it has controls that let you make changes easily.
2. The view. The viewfinder of new, mirrorless cameras shows you how changes in settings will affect the final picture. The flip-screen lets you get up or down shots more easily than when using a phone.
3. The flash. Although new cameras seem to be omitting the pop-up flash, it is possible to add a flash unit to the camera. That flash can also be used off-camera to put the light at a different angle. The best you can do with a phone is a small, weak flash.
4. The lens. A modern cell phone might have three separate lenses, but the quality and control aren't as good as what's available for cameras.
5. DOF and bokeh are also lacking in phones, compared with cameras. Selecting a different lens or aperture changes the results you get in the image. That amount of control isn't available with a phone.
6. Movement. The cell phone camera likes to be held steady because it takes multiple shots when you push the button. It's also difficult to follow fast action with a phone, especially considering the multiple shots it takes each time.
7. Selfies. Using the phone for a selfie means using the phone's forward-facing camera, the one with the lowest quality.

The narrator concludes by saying that cell phones are great for quick, casual shots that are going to be shared online, but a real camera will generally give better results.

I've said here many times, that I don't like using a phone as a camera because of the steadiness required while holding the phone away from my body. Holding it steady while taping the button is tricky. I don't always know if the picture has actually been taken. I have to keep my fingers away from the lens. Yes, these are all shortcomings on my part, but they don't apply to a real camera.

I suspect that some of you might disagree with this entire post. That's okay.

So Ive never been one of those photographers who think its OK to do basic editing to a photo but that anything more major is cheating....the mentality that says replacing a background or a sky doesnt reflect on what was actually seen at the time of pressing the shutter button and therefore isnt a true photograph. Ive always thought those views were from the dark ages.
The other day I thought Id investigate AI for the first time. I typed in a fairly lengthy description of what I wanted it to come up with....key words etc and then pushed the ok button. I was amazed to find it was more or less exactly what I envisaged in the first place.
I added it to my Flickr photostream but only placed it into a few specific groups designed for AI images.
Id already tagged it as AI generated and the only other thing I did in photoshop was to decrease the size of the bottle in the pic.
Later that day I discovered that it had been chosen as a photo to be included in Flickr explore and that it had recieved several thousand views and a couple of hundred Faves.
I never received any negative feedback...quite the opposite infact...and yet still feel slightly guilty that something I didnt take with a camera has been so well received.
What do other hoggers think?

Hello Hoggers,

How often do you send out your camera for routine maintenance? I've had my D750 for 6 years now and haven't sent it out yet, but I have had the sensor cleaned annually. Nothing is wrong with it but I'm just wondering.

Thanks,

Dennis

I have cameras that I got 20 years or more ago and still function properly that have never been sent out for routine maintenance. I have had cameras sent for repairs once or twice when a repair is needed. Normal cleaning and such I do for myself.

I can see where a person is a professional photographer, and their ability to support themselves and their families depend on their cameras, would be much more likely to send their cameras out routinely.

I asked the question this evening, "Why do phones have more advanced technology than cameras" and part of the answer, "One reason why phones may have more advanced technology than commercial cameras is that phones have a larger and more diverse user base than cameras. According to a report by Statista1, there were about 5.22 billion unique mobile phone users in the world as of January 2021, compared to about 1.43 billion digital camera users in 2022. This means that phone manufacturers have more potential customers and more incentive to invest in research and development of new features and technologies for their devices"

Phones keep getting better and many are cheaper, the flagship phones continue to be the most expensive. I'm not getting rid of my Canon 90D and lenses but I'm very hesitant to change when really our newest cameras all brands are living in old technology compared to phones. In 1980 cell phones were a huge brick, with no text, no camera and they were dumb as a brick but they were a mobile phone. I read that the first shared cell phone pic was in 1997. Maybe the dates and info are off but the cameras we know and love/hate are falling behind and it doesn't appear that the big companies care or have a plan to meet the challenge. What are your thoughts?

Maybe because we don't make and recieve phone calls, text or surf the internet on camera so a lot of additional technology is needed in a phone. Cell phone cameras improve from generation to generation but in the end the cell phone is still a cell phone that just happens to have a camera function built into it. It works good to take snapshots or to take a picture of something that comes up when you didn't ho out planning on taking pictures.

I need some ideas to store photos with the ability to send some to friends. In the past, I have stored photos on my computer transferred from the disc in the camera. If I wish to send to friends, I can only send two or three at a time because of the limitations of size of attachments on e-mail. My option is to store on a flash drive and mail it. There must be a better way. Can I store in a cloud somewhere that anyone could access .... or I could grant access. I have heard about this and I would like to know of some product names that are recommended. Thanks.

But I like to go places and take my camera, so I'll continue taking landscape shots.
While AI can do an impressive job of creating a place, I'll stick with photographing the places I've been.
