One of the privileges granted to veterans fairly recently is the right to salute the flag during the pledge of allegiance. I, for one, greatly appreciate it.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think Pres. G.W. Bush signed the document (Presidential Directive?) circa 2008 approving veterans and active duty personnel in civilian clothes the right to salute the flag. I have not yet had the opportunity to exercise that right, but have some misgivings about doing so. The only proof I have of being a veteran is my DD214. While saluting I can imagine someone next or near to me who does not know about the recent change making a scene about it. I am 78 yrs old and do not need to be involved in such confrontations. However, if such were to happen it would most likely occur at a professional sporting event which I have no intention of attending. TV viewing is fine with me.

I also have a 214 purchased in 1968. I found out through an eBay search that the accutron took a 1.3v button battery. Today, the same battery # is 1.5v. If the watch will run on a 1.5v, the suggestion is to get the watch regulated to run accurately on the higher voltage. My watch would not run on it nor could I find any jeweler in my local area that would touch it.
I still have the battery compartment tool. Check the eBay prices for that😳.

As I posted before, I've been watching shows about model railroading on Prime. Last night, I watched 45 minutes about the design and construction of a Lionel steam locomotive, the 700E Scale Hudson, based on a real locomotive from 1937. I think this took place in 1980. Lionel produced it years ago, but ended production. Design and preparation was a detailed, lengthy process. As I watched, I realized this would not be a cheap toy. At first, I estimated $150. Then I raised that to $300, $500, and $600. When the show was over, I looked it up. Engine and tender cost $1,599.00.

Imagine a parent/child conversation before Christmas.
I decided to splurge and bought this engine not long after it was available. It is Lionel’s Vision Line, their top of the line production category. Has all the high tech functions available at time of production. It is already old tech. New Vision Line steam engines have reached near the mid-$2k point with the recent introduction of the Big Boy steam engine(Union Pacific RR). These engines are way more fragile than those of yesteryear. Run one off the table and you may have an engine good for parts. As mentioned in one of the posts here, these are not toys. Lower cost engines are available for the young ones

"And what would you like for Christmas, Billy?"
"I want a Lionel 700E steam locomotive!"
"Well, I'm sure Santa will be able to leave one under the tree for you."

If the price was reasonable, I thought I might get one as a display piece.

If I buy a good gun, do I have to shoot somebody? Or can I just lock it up in my house to feel more secure satisfied that I am a gun owner?

I think all firearms should be locked up in the home when not out for use. However, for self defense your chosen weapon (hand gun, rifle, shotgun) needs to be quickly accessible and loaded. I am thinking primarily night break in situation where you may have just a few seconds to respond. One solution is to get one of those handgun storage vaults that is opened by reading your fingerprint. However, when I test mine periodically it sometimes takes up to five tries before the print is read - not a good thing to occur when under stress. And the box is not a bargain unit. I am considering a replacement box or another alternative not yet determined. As for using a shotgun or rifle for self defense, I will let others chime in on suggestions.

. . . was enjoyed for din-din tonight. That would be my fav meal, a BLT with my home grown dermaters! I would have posted a pix, but my puter went belly up couple wks ago, and new Mac hasn’t arrived yet. So just let visions dance through your cranial cavities of red ripe, home grown slices piled high with extra thick applewood smoked bacon, a leaf of crisp lettuce, all slathered in Mayo - - - mouth watering yet?

Sorry to put all y’all through this, but, man, was it ever delicio!!!

My wife and I go one level more - we add a fried egg, making it a BELT sandwich.

When I drove into town yesterday, I saw that the local bike shop was open. I thought I'd stop in some day and see what they had, not that was thinking about buying - "just looking." When I got home, I looked on their website. Their cheapest bike costs $1,500, with most of them in the $5,000 - $7,000 price range. Wow! When I was a kid, my brother and I had several bikes, and my parents weren't millionaires. Even as an adult, I bought a couple of nice multi-speed road bikes, and cost wasn't a consideration. I guess normal people buy their bikes at Target and Walmart.

Jerry,
The big box stores sell cheap (price & quality) bicycles largely purchased by parents with small children that will soon outgrow them. The bike shop in my hometown sells a large variety of bikes in all price ranges and types. You can custom order as well. I bought last year a special order cruiser in order to get the color I wanted. Price was under $500 and included the addition of fenders and a rear luggage rack. There was no additional price for ordering the bike. In two days the shop had the bike and assembled it. I don’t know what type of bike you want, but mine is a 7 speed cruiser.
If you are a cruiser biker, take a look at the Electra bikes. Prices shown are normally the same as bike shops. Those $5-7k bikes most likely include carbon fiber ones.

Sargent Preston of the Canadian Mounties... ever hear of Bobbie Benson and the B bar B riders?

I did. That show,if memory serves me correctly, was one of many short serials shown prior to the double feature westerns of the day. How about the “Rocket Man” serials? Film was in B&W. He wore a dark scuba looking outfit with two tanks strapped on his back to simulate rockets. He would start the rockets which spewed lots of smoke; then start running to give him liftoff and into the air he went. I have no memory of the story line, but sure he was the good guy.

Here's a pair on sale for $50, down from $70 - pre-ripped. I'm buying new ones because the right knee of mine looks like the left knee of his. I see a lot of this on TV - rich women wearing jeans with both knees ripped. I'd hesitate to wear these ripped pants into town. Maybe I should so people would think I was rich.

Jerry,
Remember the fad a few years ago: genuine shotgun jeans? I gave some thought to selling them at a 100% markup, but had no convenient location to legally discharge a firearm 😊.

I turned 78 on 1 May. Also, have shrunk 4”. Now, I wear only non-lace up shoes. Don’t miss tying shoelaces at all. Thank goodness for Velcro and slip ons.

We use them everywhere around the house and outside. They are disposable (not washable), and from what I can tell on the packaging on mine, there is nothing added to them, except the coloration. I have noticed that when used in conjunction with cleaning agents, the blue color fades away, but doesn't bleed onto the surface I am cleaning.

I have not used them in food storage, but food prep I have for sure.

Thanks. I have never seen blue ones; mine are white. Your reply is what I was looking for vice a corporate cya response.
