You did good Mike. I notice some focusing banding but overall a nice stack. Shooting on a white background makes cleaning up stacking halos much easier. Whats next on the rig?
Most of my samples will probably come from colleagues. One is interested in a catalog of all the scorpions of the USA. I have also started using stacking software with a microscope, so I will have plenty to work on.

The banding, and some other problems, are what I will be working on. My plan is to start a systematic series of shooting conditions, varying stacking procedures, and post-processing to identify the optimal combination. I expect to be testing as many as 100 combinations but, with luck, that will rapidly drop as I identify what works best.

When I was a kid (many years ago) you could buy a pack of extreme close up pictures of common objects from an odd angle. Then you sat around to see who could identify them fastest.

Ah, they were simple times!

Thanks guys. I'm pretty sure one of those suggestions will do the trick.

Just make one for yourself! Then post a picture of it and one of the characters here will tell you what it is called. Betcha!

Knowing my complete lack of manual skills (testimonials from my wife on file), I have a pretty good idea of what it would be called.Non-functional would head the list :D

I am working on a project for a colleague, photograhing scorpions. Almost all are specimens stored in alcohol, and the shooting is using submereged animals. I am looking for individual plastic storage boxes to keep them in. What I would like would be colorless, clear or translucent, no marks on the bottom, in a range of 2" to 5", with lid(for the occasional live one). I have tried craft stores and hardware stores with no luck. If someone uses a similar type of container, I would appreciate the source.

Thanks

ps I tried some acrylic ones and they all developed cracks within a week

Many thanks for the rapid input. I am just starting out, and I am still overwhelmed with options.

I've gone through almost all the links from this site: great information. The reason I want to learn more about optics is that I plan to work to create scientifically useful pictures, and they tend to have some very picky requirements. As a side-effect I may need to modify some of the software, and to do that I need to understand the physics behind it.

I have realized that, if I am going to really understand what I am doing, I need to have better appreciation of optics. It is many years since i took any Physics classes, and I am looking for a book (or website) that will walk me through the science of optics with an emphasis on its application to photography.

Any suggestions are welcome.

thanks.

In troubleshooting this problem, it would be helpful to get a few other bits of info from you.

1 is your monitor calibrated? If not, what looks okay on your screen may not be accurately showing the color data in the file. The file is what the printer is reading. If the monitor is way out of calibration, what you see and what the printer sees are apt to be quite a bit different.

2 what paper and ink are you using? If you are using third party inks and/or papers, the default profiles provided by Canon may not be accurate for your file. If you are using a third party paper especially, you should be using the ICC profile provided by the paper's manufacturer.

3 are you printing from a program such as Photoshop or Elements? If so, you need to set "Photoshop manages color" in the print dialogue box, rather than printer manages color

Knowing this info may help us help you.

I have a 9500 on an iMac as well. If things are set up properly, you can get very good, accurate color in your prints.

Since the screen image is a very accurate reproduction of the item itself, I doubt if that is a significant problem.
All of the other suggestions will need examination, but I have never had a printer that was SO far off in thr rendition of the colors.
My bottom line complaint is that my wife's $69 printer is doing a better job that the 9500, which costs ten times as much. In addition I have been unable to get ANY assistance from Canon, and it appears that the excess red is a fairly common problem.

Does anyone know of any hands-on macrophotography courses offered in the New England area? I have found several on-line courses, but would far rather attend an actual course since I have always found a hands-on approach far more valuable.
