What are they called?

This is driving me crazy, I can't think of the right term to search under.

I have some battery-powered LED lights that have a hot-shoe flash adapter. However, I don't want to mount them on my camera, but on a vertical metal pole. What I need is a doohickey that will clamp onto the pole, rotate and lock as needed, and which has a fitting for the hot-shoe adaptor to slide into.

If you know what this is called, and maybe where to get it, I would be very grateful.

Maybe a flash clamping foot?
Look in Cowboy Studio. They have lots of stuff like that.
Maybe. ;-)

Knowing my complete lack of manual skills (testimonials from my wife on file), I have a pretty good idea of what it would be called.Non-functional would head the list :D

http://www.ebay.ie/sch/i.html?_trksid=m570.l3201&_nkw=flash+umbrella+adapter&_sacat=0

that was a search for flash umbrella adapter.

there are a lot of variations that fit a light stand

I think this one meets your "clamps" to a pole specification.

You've gotten a lot of advice as to where to get one but no one has actually answered your question.
It called "A doohickey that will clamp onto the pole, rotate and lock as needed, and which has a fitting for the hot-shoe adaptor to slide into." :D

It's called a Speedlight mounting bracket and is available on Amazon.com for less than $7.00. I like this one because it has a built-in tilt.

The hole in the side is for an umbrella.

I dont know if anybody answered your question but ill try another way
But DOOHICKEYS are usually put together pieces that serve a purpose.
Go to Home Depot and look around you might find parts to put together to make it work for you
Those knuckles, clamps, fittings cost alot at camera stores

The correct solution depends upon two factors; the diameter of the metal pole and the distance from the pole you need the mount for the light.

A combination of "ball head" and "super clamp" or "crab claw clamp" will get you in the ball park. See for instance the "Super Clamp w/ 1/4" and 3/8" Thread +1/4" Camera Hot Shoe Mount" at Amazon for an all in one solution.

If you need more distance, then the "CowboyStudio Photography Gorilla Clamp Studio Mount" and an umbrella mount will work; these can be with ball head or stud mount.

If its a large metal pole and you need to get the light well away from the pole, then see for example the Manfrotto Super Clamp and Manfrotto Magic Arm. There are cheaper, less robust solutions similar to these, but these two are rock solid and designed to clamp on some serious pipe. You will then need the appropriate mount for whatever light you are using; for hot shoe you just need a hot shoe adapter.

This should give you some terms to use in searching for your ideal solution.
