Very very nice R.G. One of your best

Thank you Billy. Still can't understand why it's getting better comments than the other one from the other side. Unless it's that it looks more castle-like and a bit grim.....

By the way, does any member know why we can't transfer from most other members account info. next to their posting directly to their website? At least l can't. I have to write down the address, get on to internet, then go to it..

Are you talking about clicking on a link in their signature area or some such? If those links don't work by clicking on them it could be a security setting in your browser or internet security software.

If you can't find the appropriate setting to change you could try highlighting the link by dragging your cursor across it then right-clicking on it and selecting "OPEN LINK IN NEW TAB" (or one of the other "OPEN" options).

..........How about if there were thumbnail files of the image(s) after the end of the title?......

Or you could have a full-sized thumbnail pop up (perhaps in a small window) when you roll the cursor over the thread's title (and have the thumbnail disappear when the cursor moves off of the title).

Expression is everything (and the rest is processing :-) ). The fact that you can evoke that sort of reaction for the camera indicates that you have a gift for portraiture.

The only thing I notice about the processing is that the irises and whites of the eyes look a bit funny. Did you add grain - and can you mask the eyes from it? Or is it the sharpening that's given that grainy look round the eyes? A softer touch to the eyes would suit Paul's general demeanour.

Well that was certainly humbling :)

Using the dng, I opened in ACR of PS Elements. Made two tiffs, about one stop exposure apart, then merged in Nik HDR.

Nik Color Efex cross processing (I liked the old-time colors that emerged), then some glamour glow (masked sky from that), and some other "stuff."

Thanks, R.G.!

And thank you, Linda. That's one of the best antique looks that I've seen... ever. And it's so appropriate for this shot.

of your several perspectives of Eilean Donnan Castle, this one is, without question, my favorite! I have long been of the opinion that the designers of the last remodeling/ rebuilding of the site and of the castle had in mind the significance of the popularization of George Eastman's little box and, with their different "elevations", catered to the most readily attained perspectives on the scene from the shore...and that arched bridge was a final master's touch! Your trip to the Kyleakin ("Hakkon's Narrows" - to put the Historic Norse influence in more prominence) area and your images thereof have provided an exceptionally strong and esthetically profound "sense of place" such that the collective set ought be included in the "sense of Place" collections that have been previously offered.
It's been a joy and a privilege to see them!

of your several perspectives of Eilean Donnan Cast... (show quote)

Thanks colonial Coz. High praise indeed. I'm surprised that this image is getting more positive responses than the other one that I posted taken from the other side. I was gauging them by how picturesque they were. So that's not always the best yardstick.....

I'd forgotten about the "Sense of Place" series. it's a good way to make meaningful collections for others to enjoy. Thanks again for your very positive comments.

......I just think there is too much empty space......

I think people expect to see large expanses of water when the shot's of a loch or a harbour. I think any attempt to put a main subject between the viewer and the distant cloud beams and hills would detract from the sense of depth they impart and would not be conducive to the eye being led into the shot. I'm very pleased with what the jetty provided.

I've posted an edited version of this elsewhere and it was suggested that there was unexplored potential in it. I was pretty much out of ideas to take it forward so I've put it up for editing to see what ideas others come up with for it.

I'll post a link to a DNG version under the JPG.

My attempt. Cropped, reduced noise, sharpened and increased resolution.

Hi, MMC. The OP will probably be interested in knowing what steps you took to get the balance between de-noise and sharpening.

The composition is wonderful, R.G. I love the rough rocks, the line of the road, arches of the bridge, powerful presence of the castle.

I personally would not want to see any more detail in the sky or background left area, but wouldn't mind a tiny bit more drama in the textures of the stones.

Thanks for the extra pair of eyes, Linda. I subdued the foreground rock quite a bit because of its prominent position. I'll probably be putting the original up for editing in the PP section.

That is one of the loveliest images I've seen in a while. I'm extremely jealous. The composition seems perfect to me, and the capture is excellent if not perfect. There are many ways to go with processing, and I hope you'll keep working with it in your subtle but skilled way to bring out its best while keeping its natural beauty. Please share any new versions you develop, there is magic in this one.

Thank you Minniev. At the moment I don't have any ideas as to what it needs. It's taken a fair bit of pushing and pulling to get it this far. That triangle of land to the left of the castle was shrouded in mist, so there's not much detail to work with. I was thinking about adding a suitable tint, but beyond that I don't have any clear ideas as to where to take it. I have another similar shot - maybe I should put it up for processing and see where others take it.

Sounds good. Don't worry if you don't have red hair - most Scots don't. And there's not that many Irish red-heads either - we just have more than our fair share :-) .

The only thing missing is the lovely maiden standing on the bridge where the wind whips her hair and dress around her like a shroud as she awaits the return of her lover lost :)

You're right, Singing Swan. It must have been her day off :-) . Lots of wind-swept tourists, though...
