Looks like you've got the panning thing down pretty well. Nice shots.

Ron,

After posting that shot of the Great Horned Owl, I decided to see if I could find some decent shots with the 16-50 zoom. I have just returned from a month up in Washington and Oregon and I went through the pictures I took during the trip to find ones I had taken with the "kit" lens. Here is one I took of the remains of a ship wreck on a beach just down the coast from Astoria, OR. It was shot handheld at f8, ISO 320, and 1/1000 and the lens was at the 39mm position as far as zoom. I may have to rethink my opinion on the 16-50 as this looks pretty sharp to me. I cropped it to let you get a closer look at the detail.

These look great.

I reset the camera and upgraded the firmware from 1.0 to 1.2 and that seems to have helped. Or, maybe I'm beginning to see that I can't treat it like a P&S (on full auto I should be able to though I'd think). In the last couple of days I've shot over 300 pics, mostly trying to get BIF. Haven't had a decent day yet since the rains have turned into monsoon around here at times so I don't know how it'll work in good light. But, I did get some better shots yesterday. Certainly nothing worth sharing but every now and then I see some potential. My problem may all be me. I hope so.

$108 for color version - $44 for B/W version. I'm waiting for David Busch manual for it. I read some reviews on Friedman's book and some said there was a lot of "fluff" in it. I can wait and play - maybe I will have it all figured out by then.

Yeah, there's some fluff and a lot of empty space but it's chock full of good needed stuff also.

We had one of those laying around in the garage when I was a kid (only a few years ago). Never did see it run.

Far out. Didn't know John Deere had a land speed record tractor.

Nice shots.

You might want to notify B&H and send it in before your 30 days are up...

That's what I'm thinking, too.

Hard to give you advice on what to do with out a bit more detail of what you are doing and how you have got the camera set up. My advice put the camera on manual focus with focus peaking on and focus assist and focus on a subject manually take your pic and see how sharp it is.
If you are shooting action watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iMgpSrHGy0

Thanks. I have tried many shots using manual focus, even on the tripod. That's what discourages me. I upgraded the firmware last night. Not expecting much but maybe it'll help. Looks like lenses best be on my list.

Ron,

I have had my a6000 for about 4 months now and just love it but have to agree the IQ of the 16-50 leaves something to be desired. I have been using some of my old Canon FD manual focus lenses and have found that with focus peaking even my old eyes can manage to get good sharp images. Since you mentioned BIF, I have attached a picture of a Great Horned Owl in flight taken with a Canon 50mm f1.4 FD lens. I found that the fast burst rate of this little camera is a real asset. Of course I had to buy an adaptor to use the Canon lens on the Sony but it really didn't cost much and let me use some great old lenses that have been gathering dust.

Alright! I could live with that kind of image. That sucker must have been close to look that large with a 50mm. Thanks.

Hey Ron. Have a look at the Sigma 60, 30 and 19mm prime lenses. All are under $200 are great for the A 6000.

Thanks. Right now all three are awaiting arrival at B&H. Prolly have to get them one at a time. Thinking of starting with the 30.

Go to the Sony website and click on support and follow the prompts

Thanks for this. I don't know if it will correct my problems with sharpness but my 3-week old camera (to me) still had version 1.0 on it. Last night I upgraded firmware to version 1.2.

Hope I see changes.

I'm thinking they are ravens. I agree with Squirrel about the heavier curved beaks. I didn't know about the hairy feather fuzz on top of the bill so I'm glad to add that to my ID info.

Mile, your photo set is great. Love the position and 'attitude' in the second shot.

I bought the A6000 to use with my old Minolta SR mount manual lenses. It works great for that. I don't think I could have made a better choice. The A6000 has focus peaking and focus magnifier which makes manual focusing easier than with my old SRT-101. It makes a very good low light camera with a f/1.2 prime and 1600 ISO.

Con #1: I have the standard 16-50mm kit lens and it is nothing special. You should be prepared to get a better lens which may cost more than the camera.

Con #2: The Sony documentation is terrible. Luckily, the Gary Friedman ebook is the best camera "manual" you'll ever read.

I might be temporarily satisfied if my 16-50mm was "nothing special" but it plain sucks in my opinion. I was really hoping to be satisfied with it for awhile but that ain't gonna happen. I've used the manual focus, focus peaking and magnifier to get things as 'right' as I can but the pics still don't cut it. I've shot almost 1K pics and saved maybe a dozen. Maybe I'm too hard to please.

I got the Friedman ebook and agree.

Ron I have the A6000 and just freaking love it, I also have a Sony HX400 and shoot a Canon D7 II. and a Sony a350, The a6000 is the camera I shoot, the rest stays in a closet.

I will also tell you I sold the 16-50mm and the 70-200 I did not like them. the 70-200 was ok, but didn't like the 16-50 because of the way it zoomed.

the image quality from the a6000 is just freaking amazing along with the camera, the lens I use is Sigma ART 19, 30 and 60mm they are priced right and just as sharp as anything out there.

I also use manual focus lenses most of them are Minolta's that work extremely well with super IQ.

I took this shot yesterday with a Tamron manual focus 90mm 2.5 macro on my Sony a6000 I love this camera.

Johnny, I'd be estatic if I had this kind of sharpness with my setup. I know the cameras got to be capable but looks like I'm going to have to locate some lenses to get what I want. Thanks for your list. I want to do nature photography with mine and also need a long lens. My HX200V has spoiled me on telephoto.
