OK camera experts! What's your opinion on the Sony A6000?
I would be using it mainly to photograph my kids playing sports, etc. I have a Sony A7II which I use for Real Estate stuff...interiors, etc. BTW...I am not tied in anyway to the Sony brand......
Cheers!

I have one and love it! I "loaned" my 60D to my son and probably will not see it again but I still have several EF and ES lenses which I use (with an adaptor) on the A6000 as well as three very nice FD (manual focus) lenses that I picked up on eBay for a fraction of their original price. The A6000 has several aids that make manual focusing a piece of cake and it is fun to take pictures like I used to before my eyes went south. I also bought a Sigma 30mm f2.8 that has become my "walk around" lens and it focuses faster than the Sony zoom lens that came with camera. It is also very sharp and has drawn excellent reviews from all who have used it.

The only drawback to this camera is the instruction manual. The camera has so many great features but very few are covered in the manual. I purchased an extremely well written book by Gary Friedman in which he takes almost 600 pages to explain all of the magic in this little camera. If you go this route, I suggest purchasing the downloadable version as the photographs in the printed book are all in black and white.

I also would suggest you purchase a battery recharger and extra batteries made by Wasabi. The camera comes with one battery and to charge it, you have to plug the camera into the outlet. The Wasabi charger comes with two batteries, a car adaptor and is only $28 and some change at Amazon. The batteries don't last as long as the Sony battery but those cost over $50 per battery.

If you have any questions, send me a PM and I'll try to answer them.

I had the NEX-7, the A6000's predecessor, and liked it both mechanically and for Sony's programming approach.

But to comment on not being tied to Sony: I found I was tied to Nikon for two reasons:
1. Changing menus and programming from one camera to another is annoying. My main camera is a Nikon (D800).
2. Nikon's lenses are better and I have growing collection of them.
So I sent the NEX-7 down the road and replaced it with a light weight Nikon (D5300).

In your case that might mean sticking with Sony.

I've had my A6000, or rather my wife's A6000 for several months, and it's an excellent camera. I say my wife's because I could never get her interested in a DSLR but she loves the A6000 and the 55-210, shoots on Auto only and has taken some exceptional shots. I have the Sigma 19 f/2.8, the Sigma 30 f/2.8 and the Sony 50 f/1.8 in addition to the 55-210. All are excellent lenses. The advice given about the supplemental how to book is spot on, you'll learn nothing from what Sony provides. I would highly recommend the A6000. On a recent cruise several times the D600 stayed onboard and I took the A6000 on the excursions. I have no experience with the Olympus or Fuji mirrorless cameras so I couldn't comment on them.

Oh boy I hate to say this. I agree with ozdude, even though I have been a Nikon shooter for over 40 years. I bought my a6000 at Christmas. Sony is pulling me away from Nikon, even though I am kicking and screaming and holding on to my Nikon. Every time I use the a6000 it amazes me more and more. I see my Nikon becoming my back up camera in the future. I really hate to say that but its true.

I am interested in hearing more about the electronic view finder. None of the camera shops here (Louisville) carry SONY so I can't "view" for myself. How does the resolution compare to a through the lens DSLR? Also, what's the shutter "lag" with the A6000?

The electronic view finder is awesome. I thought when I first looked at the Sony I would not like it because the viewfinder is off to the left of the camera instead of the middle. But, I use the LCD screen 90% of the time and if you put your eye up to the view finder the LCD automatically shuts off, and visa versa. What is great is that you see exactly what your exposure will look like before you shoot. If you are changing your shutter speed, you see what happens to your shot. Focus Peeking is another plus.

If you have a Best Buy in your area, they will probably have the a6000 on display for you to try out.

I own two of them....one for the wife and one for me. She didn't use the Nikon D5300 I bought her. So, its being put on the block. We love the Sigma lenses for it and we also got a Zeiss Touit 12mm/2.8 wa. The Zeiss Touit 12mm is now being discounted $300. This is a superb lens. I am very pleased with the images this camera produces. I'm a fan.

Have had one for less than 3 months. Will not be selling Canon gear, but it is getting less use theses days. Finding the 16-50 kit lens is good overall for street and travel. Enjoying it a lot. No regrets for purchasing.

I shoot nothing else, all my DLSR are in the closet, including Nikon, Canon and Sony.

The A6000 is just freaking amazing, Lighting fast autofocus, excellent exposure, not much reason to shoot RAW, this camera will get right.

I also shoot The Sigma's 19, 30 and 60mm lenses, they are outstanding and price right. The 200mm lens I shoot is a manual focus Minolta MD Rokkor 200mm f/4 prime lens.

I have three. Love them. I agree with all the above comments. Go to youtube for instructional tips. I have adapters I bought on ebay to use old manual film lens. They work great. For you kid pix the csmera will shoot 11 frames a sec. Looks like a point and shoot but has pro images.
