Person 1: "What do I need with that old thing?"
Person 2: "mmmm . . . might be interesting reading."
Person 3 (with sunglasses on his shirt): uh oh . . . what's about to happen? Better grab my hand, dear."
Great story photo.

Have loved your work for a long time, Voss. First time to comment.

You're clear about your intent, and the figure is quite striking, but the drama you're looking for, I think, is not quite there with the bright blue cloud-filled sky. Maybe it needs a more brooding background.

I believe it would have more impact if it were sharper through out the whole image!!!

Not sure what you wanted to say with this photograph. For me, the point of view is just a bit strange. Not even sure I would have known what it was but for the title of the piece.

. . . Oops, attached my comment to the wrong quote. Sorry. Didn't pay enough attention!

I'm going with the drama of #9.

Simple advice given to me when I first started editing is to push the slider all the way (any slider, not just sharpening) to see the result, then back off 'til it looks like you want it to look. .

Linda, I still remember a comment you once made on a photograph that had been sharpened a bit too much. You said that, to you, the photograph looked "crunchy." I think that is so right on when it comes to describing an overly-sharpened photo.

I like it, but there are too many subjects. Maybe crop to show less. Less is more, as the saying goes.

Great light and wonderful find, but I have to agree with Nikonbug; too many subjects. Not sure where to look.

Nothing seems to speak to me, so that means I vote for #1.

Especially with wildlife, I usually like to include the environment in which they are located, and so I like #1 because you see an environment, and then you locate the bird within that environment. u4ea commented on the interesting similarity of the two rows of marsh grasses, and I would not want to lose that part of the photo. I cropped and cloned out what may have been underwater roots which artBob referred to as "snakes." I agree with him that they were a distraction. The purple stalks in the foreground add to the total environment, pick up the color of the marsh grass in the background, and, I think, add interest to the composition.

(I went back to look at the original three photographs, and I realize that my version now resembles #3.)

This is a lovely barn, and black and white suits the scene nicely. I do like the second one a bit better. In the first one, the near fence is leaning enough to make me wonder about it. Also, it blocks my entry into the scene. In the second one, the line of the fence leads me right to the barn and the fence appears to be a bit straighter. I realize that a crooked fence isn't a deal breaker. But it is distracting.

I want to strongly second AzPicLady's analysis of Photo #2. The first photo gives me way too much information. Where do you look with the strong post in the middle foreground, the leaning fence and all those clouds? #2 is a photo with an easily identified "hero" (the barn), and your eye leisurely makes its way to the focus of the photograph.

This barn attracted my eye for several reasons. It's in the early stages of decay but still in use. It looks like it was originally for livestock, but now the farm is cherry orchards. The barn seems to be used for storage with some old farm equipment in the open storage area under the one wing.

I think Barn #3 is perfect for the subject matter. However, somehow, the details of Barn #3's roof got a bit blown out as compared to the other two. I'm all for doing whatever it takes to "save" a photograph. Now the roof in #1 is practically "B&W + 1 color," so I did a composite with Roof #1 on Barn #3, and now it's even more perfect IMHO. Wanna see?

I'll start it off: in black and white; dark and brooding
