Hi, going to the Grand Canyon in July and looking to capture some great memories. I have a Canon 760D with the following lens. Canon EFS 18-85 mm 3.5 IS, Canon EF 70-200 4, and a Canon EF 50 mm 1.8. Do you think I need a Prime wide angle lens, or any other lens that may work better than my current outfit.

Photos at the Grand Canyon are primarily landscape, so the 18-85 would be my first choice, and the 50mm would be my second choice. The 70-200 would probably be too much.

I am going through a bunch of photos from when I worked for a living, as an employee for the power company. I worked in the Hydro PLants in the mountains. This photo was taken from a high road looking down at the camp where we stayed and some people live full time.

Taken with my Old Minolta Max 5D. Looks good except the sky, which looks like it was painted in. It really shows in the download...Would I be correct in guessing overexposed for the sky? I can make it look a little better in LR but not much.

It would appear to be the sky is blown out, or overexposed.

Greetings All,

It’s time to upgrade my laptop so I’ve been shopping around doing doing a lot of research. The newer trend is to include an SSD drive along with the old fashioned hard drive. The HDs are in the terabyte range or more and the SSDs are ~250 gig or so. I’d love an SSD for PP photos, especially when they get larger and cheaper, but the reviews I’ve seen seem to imply that the OS is set up so the SSDs are only for installing programs and the HDs are for storage.

If that’s the case then you could fill up an SSD that size pretty quick, depending on the programs and the number of them you have.

My thought was to install programs on the HD and store photos on the SSD. An external SSD is certainly an option but I travel a fair amount, hence the need of the laptop, and I’d rather not drag a bunch of auxiliary equipment along.

Thoughts anyone?

Thanks

Just something to think about. I purchased an HP a few years ago with a 512gb SSD. I filled it up within a year and had to take it in and get the C:/ drive replaced with a regular, but larger, hard drive. Looking at my C:/ drive, I am currently using a little over 650 gb. Keep that in mind before purchase.
Check your c:/ drive to see how much you are using before you decide.

I didn't realize there were any reasonably intact WWII boats still around. Might be worth a trip to San Fran to take the wife through one still outfitted and fully cramped with gear. The boat I served on was the USS Catfish SS339, basically the same class as the Pampanito but with many refit upgrades.

Check before you take the trip. These boats were not open to the public. They do have some in Hawaii that are boardable.

Your colophon/signature/trademark looks at least as important as any element in your photos. Not meant as an insult, just a peeve of mine seen in all too many submissions. None of us are Ansel Adams, Hoyningen-Huen, et al.

Sorry you feel that way. If you had ever had a photo stolen from you, you would possibly sign yours also. It is not a perfect way to protect ones photos, but it helps.

Welcome. Google and You Tube are your friends. You will be able to learn a lot with You Tube, and the lessons are live action, so sometimes easier to follow.

You may be misunderstanding the point on JPEG vs RAW or TIFF. JPEG is a format that is necessary in order to share or send photos to others through email or social media. It is also necessary when printing an image. Nobody that is knowledgeable on the format will reject JPEG as a useful format for an image. The problem with shooting images in JPEG is that you will limit the data the photo retains for post processing. A lot of photographers, including professionals, will shoot in JPEG + RAW so that they may send a photo to a client quickly before post processing.

Very nice set of photos, but the partially hidden barn is a stunner! In my mind I see it in b&w and think how nice it could be. Not better, just another medium to play with. Good work!
