I just started, yesterday, experimenting with flash for wildlife (bird) photography. Lots of cool new stuff to learn.
I'm sorry I didn't do this sooner the results are, IMO, Outstanding.

Based on what I have read and watched I will be working the flash, most of the time, in Manual- High Speed Sync Mode.
The purpose of the flash in this use case is for a fit of fill as well as to give the birds colors and feather pat e runs a bit of a bump.
(I would post a sample of a couple of my first experiments but that would cause this post to be moved to the Bird Sub-caragoty and I'm really looking for some guidance vs sharing an image)

I'm shooting a Canon 7d mk2 in manual with a Canon EX58011 flash as mentioned above set to Manual-HSS.
I'm controlling flash output and flash zoom manually.

For those who might ask why Manual-HSS. For me- at this point in time- I shoot fully manual with shutters speeds well above the max 1/250 sec sync speed. I may give E-ttr a try but for now aim staying fully manual.

This afternoon as the light was fading I needed increase my camera exposure for the background and subject while reducing the flash power. This requires me to adjust the exposure on my camera and change the flash output on the flash head itself.
It is my understanding that in some cases a Canon EOS and a Canon Flash will work togeather enough so that the flash adjustments can be made through the camera body controls. (So there is no reason to physicly touch the flash head)
I have been through the 7d11 and 580ex11 manuals and I don't understand how to make this level of of control work.

Before I go back and pick the manuals apart again I want to ask the UHH members IF the 7d11 and 580ex11 will work together to allow me to control the manual flash adjustments through my camera body controls.

Are you shooting with on-camera flash or with off-camera flash? With your camera and flash both in manual, once you have your initial setup you should not need to change anything except your shutter speed to correct for your background changing. If you change your aperture or ISO then you would need to modify your flash power to compensate. As long as your flash to subject distance doesn't change your flash should be good.

It might be interesting to see what 35mm camera people use here for those who still use 35mm film on occasion etc.
NO 120, sheet films or other formats. Just 35mm.
I use a F-1 mostly and a FTb and EF occasionally to keep them exercised.
Let's hear from you all on 35mm film cameras.

--------------------
I have, and use, a "Asahi Pentex Spotmatic 2" and a "Mamiya Sekor 1000 DTL" when shooting 35mm film.

Some cameras have 2 card slots with the same type of card in each.
I download a card to my computer, verify it is downloaded and do the following:
take the second card out move it from slot 2 to slot 1.
Take the former slot 1 card and put into slot 2.
Then reformat both cards.
This way each slot is being used equally.
Works for me and who knows if necessary but that is what I wanted to do.
Do others do something different?
I know that those with 2 different types of cards cannot do this so they do not need to comment.

I don't purposely switch the cards in the slots. I use a card reader to transfer pictures to my computer and if I have pictures on both cards, I just put the cards back without paying any attention to which slot they had been in. I've never had any problems doing it that way.

I have a new (to me) Nikon D850. I shoot birds mostly and I like auto ISO for the speed of gives me in adjustment. Even though the exposure indicator is balanced, my pictures mostly come out over exposed, which I have to fix later. Any ideas? I am using single point for focus - not sure that matters

--------
That sounds like an exposure compensation is dialed up. Flying birds would be more likely to be underexposed because of the sky. Check and be sure you don't have any exposure compensation turned on.

My low end I7 is long in the tooth, 8 years or so.

Hobby photographer only.

I use Photoshop, Lightroom and Affinity and NIK but have also bought over the years On1 and Capture 1 and a few others. I haven’t done much lately but I might retire soon and would thus use above more often. This is for fun and personal satisfaction only

I am getting some messages about “need more graphics card capability, etc” from some of the programs. Things are a bit slow at times. I presume newer, better would be faster.

Is there a simple answer, as of today, how much memory and what graphics cards would allow all of the above ( as of today) to work?

Are graphics cards rated as to levels (like a cpu chip I 5 or 7 for example) so that the purchase evaluation would be simpler?

How much memory would be guaranteed to be enough?

PC only please as I have tried Apple but just did not enjoy it.

Thanks for useful, pertinent information to my questions.

There is no memory card or amount of memory that will ever be guaranteed to be enough. Software just keeps being revised so it will use whatever you have and before long will require more. It has always been that way and probably always will. If you spent $20,000 on a new computer with absolutely the best available components you might be good for a couple years but then you would be back to needing to upgrade again.

You have to "Save" a copy with a different name. When you did a copy without saving a new copy first, all you did was copy the original picture as it was before you did anything to it.

I have a Canon 80D and a Godox 860 external. I find when I shoot in normal landscape mode the shots are fine. If I turn the camera 90 degrees and shoot in portrait position I get really bad shadows on a background object. A wall or whatever. I haven’t tried bouncing the flash or any other techniques. The shadows are always to the subjects right so maybe it’s the slight difference in the angle when turning the camera. Any suggestions are appreciated. I have attached 2 examples. They were taken seconds apart with no change of subject or my position.

It is because of the positioning of the flash. When you are shooting horizontally the shadow is falling down behind the subject and the subject is hiding the shadow. If your flash was off-camera so it stayed horizontal you wouldn't get the side shadowing. You could try bouncing the light off of the wall and it would give you softer light which vould eliminate or at least soften the shadow.

I assign BBF to my AE-AF lock button on my D7200. Does the aperture lock in with the focus point or does it change when you press the shutter if you recompose before the shot? I hope I’m asking the right question.

Back button focus locks only your focus.

Been thinking on Affinity but have issues i need to iron out.

1. can it actually create a new image when i hit the save button?

I mean, i used to have a copy of corel back in 2004. I could open a file, draw a mustache on the cat. And save it as a new image with that name. Can i do that with affinity?

being able to save an image is big. I do not like, or use capture nxd because it "lets" me make a crop for instance, but saves it as a 3 kb file based on the original image that no other program can open.

It is free, download it and give it a try to see what you think of it. Some use it and like it and others don't.

I am thinking about getting a bridge camera, but not sure which one? What are pros and cons?

I like to shoot landscapes and other things I see when hiking. I don't like to shoot people, animals and things that move. (except maybe trains) I like to shoot food so I do like to take close ups. I don't need a good video function. I have a 55-400 zoom lens and I really do not want to go below that. Budget is up to 1K.

----------------
The only real advantages to using a bridge camera are there is no lens changing, you have a zoom that usually ranges from moderate wide angle to a decent telephoto focal length. The telephoto end of the zoom range varies greatly depending on the brand and model you choose. I have an older Canon SX50 which has an optical zoom range range from 24mm on the wide end to 1200mm at full zoom. There are bridge cameras that have an optical zoom even longer such as the Canon SX60 at 1440mm, Canon SX70 going out to 1365mm, the Nikon P900 with a 2000mm zoom and the Nikon P1000 with a 3000mm optical zoom.

The biggest downside of them is an aperture range that is very restricted compared to DSLR lenses.

For me the main reason I bought my SX50 was the reach of the 1200mm optical zoom. I could never be able afford a regular DSLR lens that could come anywhere near that.

Hello,

I am currently saving up to get a Nikon D780 to upgrade from my late grandfathers old D5100 and I have seen that there are battery grips for the D780 on places like amazon and are to my understanding not Nikon certified or whatever. Now what I am trying to find out is does anyone own a D780 with a grip and does the grip increase the 780's CH fps slightly just like how the D850 is 7fps but is bumped up to 9fps with a battery grip attached. I am not very knowledgeable on how battery grips interact with the DSLR. I cant find anything online about if the D780's CH fps is increased with one of these grips and so I am wondering if anyone here is able to answer that for me.

Many thanks,
Harry

I have been taking photos on and off for 50 years. I have 12 albums full. I would like to get them all on SSD. Then I can view them on my dedicated laptop. Should I attempt this or is there a co. that does this. Has anyone on this form done this? I do have 2 different scanners and plenty of time. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

'-------
If you have a descent quality scanner and since you said you have plenty of time, try scanning some and see what the results are like. If you like the results go ahead and scan them yourself. If you don't like your results, there are place that do offer scanning.

As I am now in my 70’s, my eyesight is weakening. I have been a photographer now for 50+ years and still love the craft.
My question is this; would anyone in hedgehog world have advice as to how to deal with this type handicap, ie: camera links to bigger viewfinders like ipads, etc.
Any suggestions are much welcomed.

I'm 74 and I know what you mean. You can buy a Hoodman that fits over the screen on the back of the camera. The one my brother bought has a magnifier that you csn use with it to see details better.
