Screaming Scott, So many lenses in the box and a mind that thinks out of the box...I like that combination! I wasn't making too much money back in the '80s so my old Tamron was the best I could do. Thanks for your input.

Thanks, Royden. I'll do some research on that, although Imagemeister's suggestions of likely poor image quality is foreboding.

amehta, I like the utility of a short zoom with IS. I have noted the Canon offerings in the form of the 24-70 and 24-105 IS versions. I read many good things about these lenses but note that dxomark ratings seem to rate them as high average lenses, with a comparable Sigma 24-105 OS(lS) performing somewhat better. Dxomark's rating of the 5D mkiii as surprisingly comparable to the Nikon d800 providing it uses high end lenses is prompting me to look very carefully at the lenses I choose. I eventually will also be looking for a high end prime..perhaps the Canon 50mm. I look forward to your take on this and thanks for your interest

Bull drink water...you have summed up approach to life in general let alone my photographic sensibilities. If my tamron idea doesn't pan out maybe I'll adapt it for use as a spotting scope or perhaps wear it on a chain around my neck as a fashion statement. I like to wonder...it helps when taking pictures and living in general, but I'm not a tech hound...that's why I visit UHH. Many minds greater than mine here to share ideas. Thanks for your reply.

I thought if I exposed myself as both old and ignorant I would not have to withstand cheap shots. That old lens didn't do too badly in its day if you were printing 8x10's...just curious as to its current utility before I donate it. You don't know if you don't ask. Thanks Imagemeister for your kinder response.

I am about to expose myself as simultaneously old and ignorant. in one hand I have a softly used circa 1980 tamron 80-210 cf tele macro lens with a Pentax bayonet adapter. In the other hand I have a new canon 5d markiii body. Is there an adapter that would join them?

Thanks SS....do you see any benefit to staying with Canon lenses for my 5d mkiii as opposed to using the sigma 24-125?

Imagemeister, your sage opinion is requested. Getting ready to order my new 5d mkiii but still haven't decided on the lens. I know I want an IS zoom but some of the reviews of the latest Canon offerings are not as great as past iterations. Saw a Sigma24-105 with OS with a little better review but still generally average. I just want to get the most out of this camera. Any thoughts?

Thank you all...Pentax 645d = flight of fancy. I think the 5k lenses pushed it over the edge. One can dream.

Decisions decisions. As some you helpful lads may recall, I've been holding out to buy the phantom large megapixel DSLR canon If and when it materializes. I now find that I will need to put their phantom new zoom 24-70 with image stabilization on the waiting list. Anticipating a considerable jump in the cost of these rumored Canon products....I was wondering if anyone might have something to say about the already expensive Pentax d645 as a possible alternative. As some of you may recall, I require large megapixel and good glass for very large prints and good crop options. I know all you Nikonians are ready to pounce, but humor me. Thanks

The only thing I use it for is selecting part of an image in Photoshop...and only very generally. For very precise selection I use the masking tool which allows me to select with 2 or 3 pixel precision.

Lacquer on the front and glue on the back? I don't think I can promise the greatest possible archival print longevity with that combination. I've seen some large print displays that simply hang the image as-is..smooth, flat and clean cut. Then they are sold at a much lower price and the owner can determine how best to mount them. Of couse, the print must stand on its own technically and asthetically, not requiring a frame to catch the viewer's eye. The downside...you' d probably need to reprint every image for every new exibition..depending on the venue. With a film negative, the value of the image lies in the emulsion or the image sensor and memory card with digital. These mediums are the true home of the image and must be well organized for preservation.
