My LX was CLA'ed by Eric Henderson in 2015; it should outlive me. I recently got a Mamiya RB67 and picked up a set of replacement foam seals. Will install them after the holidays. Nice thing about the old stuff is they are generally repairable as they do not rely on circuit boards/electronics. Granted, the LX does, but its backup is a K1000.

hope you had a great yule and new year. i use a mamiya rz and a bunch of lenses. the rb is a great instrument and you simply cannot beat the negative size. mamiya has been building excellent medium format lenses forever. you won't be disappointed.

I gather, from your comment, WJ ... you actually made a hole in your ceiling for the 5x7 enlarger's girders to go through, huh? ... Did you re-insulate?

Did Weston actually say that?

For me ... anything, 300' from the house, OR the van - is - pornographic .... don't go there ... twas silly ... but, you get my meaning, WJ ....

okay, yes, punched a hole in the roof! roofing company won't speak to me anymore, cannot figure out why, oh well.
and yes, Edward actually said that. at the time, he was most sincere.

Oh, okay, WJ ... that's the SMART way to do it, huh?

How long does the stored energy last?

Or - has that never been a concern to you?

it has never been of concern to me - i fire it up 2 times a year and it seems to be happy. have had it for 5 years.

My experience is that old lenses work just fine in modern Pentax cameras, and I personally find their focus confirmation to be easier than split screen focusing {but I don't use wide apertures with their paper-thin DOF's}.

smart person, you!

Hello, I'm relatively new to this forum and have enjoyed your banter with one another as well as appreciated the skill level that's out there. I do shoot some digital (Canon 5D MIII). I still prefer to shoot film, predominantly B&W and enjoy working in my darkroom. I was wondering whether there are others on this site that frequently shoot film?

film is all that i use and my darkroom with the 5x7 zone VI enlarger and beseler 23cII enlarger.

Please explain how any of these thoughts apply to those of us who used Kodachrome and sent film to "Kodak" via mailers.

The reference to Powell and his huge camera is referring to John Wesley Powell who explored the SW US in the late 1860’s. I do not have a camera like that. Just offering an alternative to 35mm. I hope your 5 degrees is c not f. Brrrrr. At some point nothing works. Near where I grew up holds the record for cold in contiguous US. At -69.8 f. I’m sure no photos were taken that day, at least outside. Enjoy your day.

and that is the neat thing about film cameras. they come in all sizes for all folks to use and make great photos. so, good luck to all of us, no matter what they use.

I decided to go back to film as a lark. Bought a Pentax K1000 from fleabay (vendor was KEH) it had an unusable (de-silvered) viewfinder. Rather than get into a return pissing contest sent a note to Eric Henderson. He replaced the viewfinder and did a CLA for $70. It works like a new camera. Uses standard SR44 batteries. Like it so much, I then got a Pentax LX, which is the top-of-the-line 35 film Pentax. The nice thing about Pentax's are the amazing amount of lenses available for them. You can quench your GAS for not much money.

the last thing i want to do is rain on your parade, in regards to the lx. it was a great idea except for one weak spot. the synthetic mirror dampers on either side of the mirror degraded with age and kept the mirror returning once the exposure was complete. the replacements are hard to find, but with any luck, yours will never have that problem - good luck - they are a lovely camera body.

Is this the kind you have to fill with gasoline?

Or do you have one of those things buried in the ground, that stores the electricity - and then releases it, when there's no longer an original source?

yup, the buried in the ground thingky. i do not like being cold with the onset of hurricanes, tornados or blizzards. can't do much about earthquakes though!

I have done, WJ ... and yes, they were wonderful ... no 35mm (digital or film) can match that kinda quality ...

But, it's a flat-bed ... which means I can only use it, indoors ... more like a copy set-up ...

And my days of carrying around ANY size View Camera, on a tripod - are long gone ...

You actually invested big bucks in a 2000lb. 5x7 enlarger, did you? ... How high is the ceiling in the room where you use it?
got a hernia from horsing that wretched zone 6 enlarger around.

which part of the ceiling are you referring to. the normal part or the part through which the 8ft girder protrudes?

also in regard to lugging big stuff, my 5x7 with one lens and 5 film holders and one light meter comes in at about 10 pounds. this is in addition to the tripod, of course. in the words of the late, great Edward Weston, at a certain point in one's life anything 300 feet from the station wagon is photographic.

no reason other than not so subtly direction the above mentioned body owner to same system lenses.

A telephoto can be either a prime (fixed focal length) or a zoom (a range of focal lengths). This article might help:

no, incorrect. a prime lens is a lens which has a fixed focal length. a zoom lens has a range of focal lengths. there is no "either, or".
