You really need that view finder above 20X just to find the subject. Also you don't have to deal with the screen glare althought the articulating screen makes it easy when using a mono-pod when you are waiting for a bird to change position.
Here is a picture shot hand held F 5.7 -1/200sec at a 144mm focual length or 35mm focual length 810mm.
The duck had just come up out of the water and water beads are on it's beak. I had image stab. on.
Before I disclose what kind of camera and lense please comment on the sharpness. Then comment if you think the second picture with PP is prefered.
Thanks - Tom
Instead of increasing the mono-pod length perhaps sit down and the Mono-pod is now above your head.
I took this picture of a cotton Mouth in a S. Florida swamp with my trusty point & shoot. I was standing on a board walk.
What do you think of these changes?
I will give it a go with this Heron
I also use Paint Shop 4 Pro and found it is easier to learn than for instance "Gymp". The price was right. I am still learning " layers". I find that now I post process all photos because I always see room for improvement.

(notice I don't have an wrinkles that is in the picture)
I agree with you all on the sun glare problem on the point and shoot casmeras. My solution is to take my sun glasses off first, then cup my left hand and place it over the 3 in view finder. I close my hand such that the index finger and thumb touch. I make sure I have all the picture framed by backing off a little on the zoom. Try this technique and see if it helps with your camera.
I wanted a mini tripod which was very stable and folded flat. Vivitar VIV-VT-3 Micro Tripod 3" Height- was my choise as is easy to carry in a shirt pocket and the design provides a strong low center of gravity to support the camera. Amazon .com has them under $8.
I have chosen to go back to point & shoot where I can carry a camera with me all the time for those un-expected photo ops. Please evaluate this photo which I shot at about 25 feet at ground level with about 10x optical using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH25.
