In 1972, I purchased a Nikon F2 as my first SLR. I was in the Navy, stationed in Keflavik Iceland. Every weekend, I tried to go shooting Ektachrome and Kodachrome. We had to mail exposed film to Kodak in New York, and often had to wait 2-weeks for the film to return. Out of sheer economics, I became quite good at composition and exposure, resulting in conservation of film. My next duty station was an aircraft carrier, the USS America, along with 5,000 other sailors. From the Gulf of Tonkin, offshore of Viet Nam, we had to mail film to San Francisco for developing, and returning to the ship sometimes took 3-weeks or longer. Cramped quarters meant that I did my slide viewing in the mess hall, on a dining table. I would set-up my slide sorter rack, fill it with slides, and set aside the keepers into my illuminated slide viewer. Sometimes I would have 6 or 8 yellow boxes of 36-exposures each, viewing one box of slides at a time. Naturally, this activity attracted attention, as the mess hall always had foot traffic, 24-hours a day. Sometimes a half-dozen lookie-lous would kibitz as I edited my images. Inevitably, most were shocked when they realized I was keeping just 3 or 4 slides per box, and planned to discard the rest. Several sailors were quite unhappy with me, for not sharing my 'discards' with them. It was useless to explain, so I just said 'No'. Eventually, I was asked to conduct photo classes and project images about how to shoot scenics during port visits, as well as informal portraits, and other travel photography. It was common to have 50 or 60 sailors as the audience, and they asked pertinent questions. Back then, nearly every sailor had a decent camera, purchased from the Base Exchange, even though they had little idea how to use the built-in light meter, etc. On occasion, several of us would go shooting together, in interesting ports like Hong Kong, or Athens, Greece, or the Isle of Rhodes, or Majorca, Spain All of this focus on photography lead-up to me considering photography as a vocation, rather than just recreation. Before I left the service, I enrolled in Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California, but that is a different story, for a different time.

I bought a new "Asahi Pentax Spotmatic II" in 1971 while in the Navy serving on the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea (CVA43). I got loads good pictures on the ship of the F4's and A7's and A6's taking off while we were in the Tonkin Gulf (as part of the Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club) I took quite a few shots while in the Philippines at Subic Bay and Cubi Point, as well as in town in Olongapo. This is also when I bought my first underwater equipment to take pictures along the reefs.

Have you had a photographic aha moment?
Maybe it was the first time you developed film, opened up a Nat Geo mag and saw nature or travel shots, or a visit to a gallery. Maybe it was a piece of kit or a vacation to a far off land. Or maybe a friend with a camera!
For me it was a gallery visit to Pier 24 in SF about 6 years ago. I was studying how to use lighting but was having a lukewarm relationship with portraits. For me it was all wildlife and landscape.
Then I came face to face with a portrait by Hendrik Kerstens called Hairnet. A 50"x60" portrait of his unassuming daughter. The portrait was huge and I was absolutely blown away by the detail and color in that portrait. It actually looked translucent like it had depth and I could see all the tiny veins in her face just under her pasty skin.
At that moment I started going away from nature and more into the commercial realm. It's where the money is anyway!!!
So what is your AHA moment, that's had a profound effect on how you shoot, what you shoot or why you shoot???
Everybody probably has one or more. Or maybe you're still waiting to have yours! LoL
If yours involves a photo, feel free to post one.
So lets hear them.......

For me it when I set up my first darkroom , processed my first rolls of film and got to watch the first picture starting to appear on the paper in the developer tray. This was at the end of 1963, and my first 35mm camera that I had at that time was a used "Argus C3" with a flash attachment that used either Press 5 or Press 25 flash bulbs. I was 14 and totally hooked on photography.

IBM had an operating VM many years back and we could run just about every other operating system on it. I would often have Unix, linux, MVS(big mainframe) etc etc. using a Win PC on my desk as the front door. And before I retired I was working on the fastest box in the industry. With a little bit of parallel processing we could take a job that would run for a week and do it in hours, and as the hardware got faster, even less time. It's been 15 years since I retired and have no idea(by choice) the improvement scale.

All that said, I like my little win 10 PC.

I remember running VM at IBM when I worked for them in the 1980's and early 1990's in the Poughkeepsie and Kingston plants. That was when they also had their own chip manufacturing plant in East Fishkill. I was in the IS division at the time they first built their first large scale networking system. I believe all of IBM's software was proprietary back then. i know when it came to their mainframe super computers, at the time, the software was leased to the organizations buying the computers. This was back when John Opel (1981–1985), and John F. Akers (1985–1993) were the CEO's.

Hi, I download the DxO Pro 9 and it does not have a profile for the Canon 7D Mark II. Can someone tell how to add the 7D Mark II to this program?
Thanks!

How about converting the camera's RAW files to DNG with the free Adobe DNG Converter, then try opening them in DxO 9 and you would still be working with a RAW file format and the extra data?

I’ll start by saying I could probably experiment with this myself, so forgive me for not doing this myself. But, maybe some of you have direct experience and can guide me.

I’ve only recently begun dealing with shooting raw+jpeg with my D5300 and using PSE 15. I know when shooting only jpeg that I can set the size, which would imply that the smaller the jpeg, the more frames I can get on a given SD card. But if I shoot raw+jpeg, I’ll get fewer images on a given card. Now, if set up for smaller jpegs, but still shoot raw, will that give me more images or is the size of the raw file linked to the size of the jpeg?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Try shooting only RAW and then use the free program, "Instant JPEG from RAW" to extract the JPG from the RAW file. That way you can have both and still save room on your card while having the extra RAW data to use if you need it for recovering details.

I know people that tried that, but it doesn't necessarily work. Usually, if it displays on your screen, you can go into the browser temp files and copy at from there into another directory. When someone showed me that, I just started using much smaller low-res pictures with a watermark and that pretty much takes care of it.

Interested in the opinions of UHHers who bracket the ISO when shooting HDR.

I've never heard of anyone bracketing the ISO when shooting HDR. Most people I know keep the aperture and ISO set the same for all shots in the series, and vary the shutter speed. I would think that varying the ISO could cause noise problems.

James, I'm just curious, has your brother considered a Pentax K-3II from B&H they have it with a free battery grip and bundled with a DA 55-300 its around $1146. If he has Pentax DSLR now then the Lens he has will work with the K-3II, all K mount lens will fit all Pentax APS-C DSLRs and the plus is he will be buying a new camera from a reputable dealer.

I imagine he did look at Pentax. The old digital one he has now is a "Pentax ist D" 6 megapixel and I think it has a "K" mount if I remember correctly. H e has always like it and has taken many really good shots with it all over. He had been looking at Pentax, Canon and Nikon then decided on Nikon after comparing the models he was interested in.

I'd steer clear of that. Why are they offering the 18-55mm lens? That's not usually sold with the D7200. The price is low, suggesting gray market. In the chart at the bottom of the page, the kit next to it is described as "International" - gray market. Adorama and B&H have the body and 18-140mm lens for $1,296. That looks like a better deal. And with Adorama, you get some extras.

Thanks. The responses I've received pretty much reflect what I had already suspected. I told my brother I would suggest not going with it and I sent him links to "B&H", "Adorama" and "Cameta". I recommended that he look on their sites to see what he could find. He did tell me later last night in an email that he had pieced together the D7200 and lenses he wanted at one of the stores I suggested but I don't remember which it was right now.

Thanks to you and to all others that have responded. My brother will be all set soon and now knows which sites he should use when he wants to order anything else for his photography.

It wasn't the Amazon ad. The third post down from the top of this subject lists a web address that canarywood1 found via google. I clicked on that link and found, right after the title what I posted.

I near buy the bundles either, since I feel in most cases the extras offer very little, if any, added value.

No, I didn't notice that, and it would concern me too. I am looking at the Amazon ad now but I don;t see where, in the ad, you are referring. What else is near the reference in the ad, so I can find it?
