I snapped this in December...

Wow is this thread discriminatory. Leah, I have been waiting all winter for snow. I took my outside Christmas decorations down yesterday because I have been waiting for snow to photo them. So all I can do is be thankful there is someone out there that has snow photos for this winter, and... be envious of them.

We don't get much snow here in Arizona, but when we do its interesting.

Thank you all for your input. I tend to spend way too much time analyzing and too little time doing. But dollars are tight-I don't mind spending them, but I only want to do it once. Thanks again.

I know this has been discussed up one side, and down the other, but here goes again. 15 years ago or so, viewsonic monitors were almost the standard for graphics. I see that Costco has a 21.5" viewsonic for 150.00, which sounds like a good deal. I am currently editing on my hp laptop, and doing surprisingly well, but more size along with ability to calibrate is attractive. Anybody have any experience with these, or information on how to determine if its a good value?

These days everyone seems so hung up on special lenses to get those sought after short DOF shots everyone seems to want.

Actually, in my experience, you don't need a special lens at all. I've been doing short DOF work for years with standard lenses like the photo below.

I shot this indoors, Canon t1i, 28-200 Canon lens, flash,
f/5.6, ISO 200.

My point is that if anyone with a dslr knows how to operate their camera, but more over their lens, they can get the same effect without special lenses of any kind.

Discussion? Post your own short DOF with standard lens?

I shot this with the 55-200mm kit lens on my d500

I am looking for reasonably priced backdrops (online) for portrait work, such as simple landscape scenes, backdrops for children etc. I have found several vendors but I hate to order from somewhere without a referral and then have problems later. Ya'll are the pros here. Can you help????

I don't know how portable this has to be, but for a durable, neutral good size background, a remnant of carpet tacked to a large dowel (so you can roll it up) works very well. Keep the subject far enough away so the carpet is out of focus, and you can do wonders. It's kind of heavy, so good stands are mandatory.

I've been hanging around awhile and even posted some comments and photos. But now I have an issue that disappoints me, and I suppose its a sign of creeping dinosaurism. I have a Nikkor "s" lens (circa 1964) 58mm f:1.4 that I dearly love. But when I put it on my d5000, the camera tells me I have no lens attached. Does Toby Keith not appreciate Patsy Cline?? Is it hopeless?? Can I override anything to make the body accept the lens? I hope someone can help me.

Be very careful here. Although those old lenses can fit, they can also damage the newer mount. Before you mount that lens again, go here: http://www.aiconversions.com/

Captain: Thanks for the link. I lucked out, because after my epiphany I got out of bed to try the lens. It works on manual, only, and the chart confirms it. I was holding my breath for a minute

I fear you will be swamped by the lake as it drains to the left. Please straighten your horizon and it will be a great shot.

you can use it but set your camera to manual. also you won't get metering or focus assist and of course no auto focus. the s lens is too early to have a chip in it to tell the camera what it is. however those old nikon manual focus lenses in an all metal casing with the multi colored dof scale on the barrel are by far the best looking camera lenses ever made. by the way love your toby keith and patsy cline references. two of my favorites. did you know that a young songwriter named willie nelson wrote "crazy" for her. what a voice she had.

I'm afraid the era has come to an end, Willie Nelson is about the last of the breed. I also felt incredibly stupid last night. I posted and went to bed, and then realized the "F" predated electronics, so shoot on manual, stupid. But I always appreciate your posts. You, Captain C, Nikonian, and NikonShooter, along with a few others, are always on target.

I think the pose is superior, the composition and the mermaid thing going on. But I always have negative thoughts when I see a portrait lit from below...like the light is coming from hell. Marriage is tough enough without the devil attending the wedding. However, I can really appreciate the off camera lighting and the attempted effect.

I just hope my wife dosn't see this post or I will be back in the work shop. Our walls are covered with family photos. I never have to paint. Really though I like the idea of not making more holes in the wall. Thanks.

I may be an old man, but I've only been married 10 years and have a lot to learn. I showed this to my wife, and now have a cold weather project.

Were the Lunar Landing photos of the 60's genuine,or shot in a studio?

Every now and then on this forum I learn something or am challenged to learn. But every day brings a new source of entertainment and humor, along with something to bring back memories. I, too, was in Thailand for the moon landing, and did all the "networking" of my Thai friends to find someone with a television to watch the landing. We all gathered in front of the small screen, ... and the power went off! Since then I have watched tapes of the landing, but I will always regret missing the actual event.

This is great. I was thinking about starting a tread on this topic. Since the late 80's, my 'F' has been in a drawer, while I used the 8008, and then the n90s. I was developing cataracts, so the autofocus was a blessing. Since I've been on UHH, I decided to start shooting manually, like so many suggest. I took out my trusty 50mm f1.4, put it on my d5000, and went to my grandson's birthday party to shoot available light. Providence, (or some devine force) made me suggest that my wife take her d40 so we knew we would get some good shots. My daughter had her d40 and a niece with her d90. I'm glad, because I only got about four good pictures. (I never thought about it, but the whole family uses Nikons. Do you suppose that's why I can never find the lens I want?
