You will find that "Kit" lenses will give very good results if you don't push them to their limits. If you stop them down two stops lower than their widest aperture and not zoom them to the limits. You cannot except them to do as well in low light as a lens that is two or more stops faster. You cannot expect Bokeh when they don't have a large aperture. But if you shoot around f/8 which is a good stop for 80% of what you shoot outdoors you will have a hard time doing much better with a big money lens. - Dave

Absolutely spot on. If you can avoid the extremes of aperture and zoom- especially at the long end- they're 95% of the quality at a quarter of the cost-or less. The law of diminishing returns applies to lens purchase as much as anything in life.

SX50 is a GREAT camera!! Enjoy not having to change lenses!

Sorry to be a misery, but don't print above 6 X 4 unless you had full sun behind you...

Thanks for this thread Pepper. The way some respond to a straightforward question has been almost as fascinating as the answers themselves. I love UHH!

To answer your question, 14mm Panasonic pancake on my EM-5- light, unobtrusive, so nobody thinks I'm a pro making money, and sharp enough to crop pretty hard if that's what I need. What's YOUR favourite walk around lens?

Thanks Master Flash. I've been watching the forum for a while, and well impressed by the community, even if some don't take fools gladly!

Hi all, I'm new to UHH, and new to any forum, so be gentle with me!
Will photograph anything interesting, especially outdoors, especially wildlife, and especially birds.
Have used a Samsung GX10 10 megapixel DSLR for years, now taming an Olympus EM-5 and very impressed with both camera and lenses- kit lens plus 45-150 kit zoom, and beautiful primes,
Olympus 45mm and Panasonic 14mm pancake.
I always carry a compact, Samsung 850, with sometimes surprising results.
I prefer to get the image as complete as possible in camera, but not afraid of a bit of PP.
