I have used CR for several decades, and they are almost always on target. However, I'm convinced that they have a bias toward the "lazy consumer" (which I am for most purchases). For most "sophisticated" purchases and purchasers, they may de-emphasize or ignore features that may be important. I don't know, for example, if any CR scientists have ever taken a macro shot -- the can't possibly be expert in the features of every product they evaluate.

They are still my go-to source for most purchases.

I agree. There is a tendency for reviewers anywhere to review for the base of their readership. I was looking at reviews for online backup sites and noticed that one site (will remain nameless) gave an editor’s choice to a service with a default maximum file size of 5Mg and a big price add on over 1 gig of storage. Other services had unlimited storage at very little more than the base price of the EC. They even discussed the needs to store photos but saw no need to address the size issues. Obviously they are more concerned with casual users who are not likely to have more than 1 gig of photos. That does not include anyone with more than a two year old point and shoot.

You might try trading a little shutter speed for a lower ISO. Play with it. If you. Can get to ISO 100 at 1/1000, you might get a sharper shot.

I usually run the other way when asked to shoot more then 5 people. Captain C has given good advice on shooting large groups--with examples.

Not the largest group. Difficult because it was almost too dark for auto focus and little cooperation from the members of the group.

I could go out on a limb and guess who in the picture was less than cooperative. The second row is rather telling.

Your eye simply cannot tell the difference between a 2Mp or a 36Mp camera shot when printed at 6X4.

If "normal" print size is 6x4 then the photographer should probably not have purchased a DSLR and does not need to worry about lenses.

A using a cheap lens lens to its fullest capability is at least equal to a pro setup emasculated.

Rob.

But not equal to a pro setup used to its fullest capability.

Well could it be that you are assuming they are usuing Canon equipment because they believe it's the best? Or maybe they are using them because Canon gives free Canon gear to Photographers for advertisment??? who knows?

For some of that glass, sports photographers are the big market. Canon cannot afford to do giveaways to that large a slice of their market. And what free advertising. They are taking the pictures.

After reading all this and using a 50mm f/1.4, I've decided that I DID need a primary lens. Especially for taking pics of the grands. Thank you everyone.

Great! I have the 50 1.4 as well and love it.
As a follow-up to my earlier response. I now have the Sigma 18-35 1.8. After doing some micro adjustments using Sigma's new hub, I have to say I am thrilled! I find the 50mm (which is effectively a 75ish on a cropped sensor depending on the camera) a little too tight for indoor shots. The Sigma fills the gap up for parties and small events. I will be shooting a Halloween party on Thursday and look forward to working this piece of glass.

I can't remember who said that.

You will see more people grocery shopping at Walmart than any other grocery store. Does that mean Walmart has the best produce and other food items than any others Store brand?

Sports photogs will spend whatever is necessary to get the best equipment. So Walmart is the wrong metaphor. More like Whole Foods. So, yes, if the pros at NFL games are using canon it is because they judge it to be the best. And they wou ld know. That said, if you are not doing sports or you have a limited budget, that all changes. Their judgment applies to their field. Portrait, event, or nature work would be different. Though catching birds in flight has demands similar to sports.

Yep, as we said in the 60s, the trip is everything. We are talking about the same kind of trip aren't we?

They, Canon Nikon Olympus Pentax Sony Fuji etc make very good products. Too many to pick from but a blast to try. To me deciding factor was how it felt in my hands when taking pictures. Only once did I decide based solely upon reviews and got rid of it 6 months later. Great camera but didn't like holding it.

I don't remember the 60's. Do you?

I think I will do a video of a camera in a box NOT being taken out. My new feature lenght film "CAMERA IN A BOX" will be released in the near future, if they let me out long enugh to release it.

Thanks to Andy Warhol. "Sleep" and "Empire" are great works of art.

I got sucked in by one of those ads too. Still find it hard to locate information on this site, but sometimes it is the trip not the destination.
