Just received my Consumer Reports 2014 buyers guide and the Canon SX 50 didn't make the listing, either in SLR like or super zoom. But the Nikon L 820 that I use is a recommended best buy.

Dog in AZ. Eat meat, one million wolves can't be wrong. Or just kick back and feel smug.
What do you think all those wolves know that CR doesn't?
Hmmmmm.....maybe, some kind of paradox. Maybe all those test machines just aren't human. Ya think?

I have been a fan of CR for many years. Having said that, I also read their personal user reviews for the products they rate. Often times they are quite different. With one being more positive or negative than the other. If you log into their web site you can click on user reviews and see what they say. I haven't looked at them for the SX 50, but I have one and personally know others who do. I bought mine based on personal experience of friends.

Quite possibly because the SX50 was released in 2012 and the L820 in 2013...

I have used CR for several decades, and they are almost always on target. However, I'm convinced that they have a bias toward the "lazy consumer" (which I am for most purchases). For most "sophisticated" purchases and purchasers, they may de-emphasize or ignore features that may be important. I don't know, for example, if any CR scientists have ever taken a macro shot -- the can't possibly be expert in the features of every product they evaluate.

They are still my go-to source for most purchases.

I just checked out the SX50 on consumer reports online (I'm a subscriber)& they have tested it. They gave it a score of 61 out of 100 which would put it in the upper end of the current superzoom segment . Six other models scored higher overall, many more scored lower...

CR is EXCELLENT.

IF he don't have in-house expertise on a particular subject or item, the bring in talent that does.

CR is TOTALLY unbiased in their approach to reviews and in my personal experience, 99.999% of the time they are DEAD ON THE MONEY.

That's right! Every magazine on the planet is bought and paid for to some extent. Especially reviews. Do you really think a reviewer is going to bad mouth, even if it is justified, a product of a sponsor ..... Get real! The only reviews I trust are user reviews and even then you have to be careful as some reviews may be deliberate plants.
