Hello Ladies and Germs,

I have Been taking photos using manual for a short period of time. I guess a couple months now. I went to a wedding this Sat. with our camera. I had a little hope that the skills I have been studying might show up in the photos I captured. Sadly it was an unhappy result. I was not doing this for anyone but my experience. Nobody was counting on me but me. Most all photos taken in auto were satisfactory to Good. Most of the manual focus photos I took were out of focus blurred or otherwise virtually unusable. When in live view the screen looked acceptable for taking but end result was not. I did not use a tripod at all as I did not want to interfere with the real photographer. I believe there was vibration or movement showing in some of the photos but not all and none when in auto. Needless to say I am disappointed that even a modicum of competence was not displayed in my endeavor. Lighting was horrible but not an excuse. Just venting frustration.
Have a good day

Do you know what you had the ISO, Shutter speed and Aperture set to in the manual shots you took? If you decide to try something else like this you might consider taking a monopod to use if you need it. That way you wouldn't have to worry about a tripod possibly gettingin the way but would still have some support available. I have taken a monopod to weddings before and it does help.

I use these, https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/788272-REG/Vello_WB_CS_White_Balance_Card_Set.html , for testing, but not for doing actual exposures. If actually needed for exposure, I'll use the white card in this set.

I have the Kodak cards that are accurate. Other brands I have bought are not.

I will check and see what Kodak gray cards I can find available. Thanks.

Yes, sometimes I'll go old school and use a 18% Grey Card. I've found my cameras anyway are pretty damn accurate for exposures, even going back to my film Pentax K2 DMD to say nothing of my Pentax DSLRs (Hell, even my CellPhone makes accurate exposures). Most often I find I'll use a grey card is if I am using a totally manual lens and find I don't like my initial starting point exposure with a digital camera. I use grey cards only for exposure setting with either the camera's meter or a hand held light meter.

For setting White Balance (if done manually) I may use a White Card. I find the various Kodak Grey cards I have adequate. I have not settled on a white standard; printed card or white piece of paper.

I use a neutral gray card to set white balance and it does well. I want an accurate 18% gray card to set an accurate initial exposure point. If I take a shot of it close up and the exposure is correct, I should get a spike centered in the histogram. If my exposure is off some I can adjust it until the spike is centered but you need one that has a true 18% reflectance to be sure the exposure is correct.

The WhiBal brand of gray cards are very accurate. Each one is tested by an industrial spectrophotometer before they leave the factory. I have been satisfied with mine.

Is this actually a gray card or just a white balance card?

Thank you, I'll look into one made by Kodak.

I am for an accurate neutral gray card that has true 18 % reflectance. I want to use it to accurately set correct exposure. I may vary the exposure one way or the other for creativity but I want the truely accurate initial exposure. Does anyone here use a gray card to set or check for accurate exposure and if so, could you suggest one or more good reliable ones? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

What do hogs who use ON1 think about it, particularly those who use it as a stand alone, to replace Lightroom and Photoshop?
Thanks - Skipnord

I have "On1 Photo RAW 2017.6" and Also the new "ON1 Photo RAW 2018" and I use it most of the time now. I think it is very good and is getting even better. I also have Affinity Photo 1.5.2 as well and I use it a lot too. So far I haven't missed Lightroom and Photoshop at all.

I have set up a system to photograph my wife's artwork even when it is framed

white backgrounds in the artwork to look really white. I have tried
custom white balance with limited success. Any suggestions?

I am using daylight bulbs and most aspects of the pictures look good when
I use the daylight setting, but white backgrounds look grayish or
greenish.

A "Color Checker Passport" of "SpydrChecker" either one should get all of the colors correct. Use a gray card or ambient light meter to get the exposure correct too. Have you tried something like this?

Since Shutter speed is 1/125, is lowering it 1/250 or not?

No, going from 1/125 sec to 1/250 sec is "raising" the shutter speed which would cause a 1 stop underexposure. To compensate you would you would need to either change the ISO to 200 or you could open the aperture fron f/8 to f/5.6, either would correct for the 1 stop change made going to 1/250 sec.

I am currently in New Mexico traveling with my wife. I recently purchased a d7100 and practiced with it before I left. To hedge my bets, I an shooting in both RAW and JPEG. I typically have been shooting landscapes with several different lenses , all Nikon. Obviously, I have not processed any pictures. I normally shoot in aperture priority.

After I take my shots, and look at the pictures on the lcd screen, they consistently look over exposed. Enough so that I also take a duplicate shot using one of scene modes, something I prefer not to do. My white balance is set to daylight most of the time. I vary my ISO depending on the shutter speed desired vs aperture.

Am I doing something wrong or do RAW pics look this way on the screen? I wish I could send you a sample, but all data is still in camera. This is my first time shooting RAW.

It has already been recommended to turn on the highlight warnings and use the histogram to evaluate your shots, and I would recommend using the RGB hostogram, not just the luminosity histogram. If you have a lightmeter try taking an ambient light reading of the scene or if you have an 18% grey card you can set both your white balance and exposure using it. You can also try if setting some exposure compensation if the problem is pretty consistant.
