Does anyone know how much it cost to repair/replace a shutter that dies. Can it be done? I guess it depends on what is cheaper the repair or a new camera. I mean if a person spends a couple grand or more on a high end camera would it be cheaper to have the shutter repaired/replaced if possible. I figure if the camera is 500.00 or less new then i would guess it would not be worth it. I would expect this repair would be up round this amount. Does anyone know am I in the ball park? I was reading about shutter life/actuation's and these questions came to mind. Just curious :)

I use precision camera in Enfield CT http://www.precisioncamera.com/ you can go to their website describe your problem and the will give you a quote for repairs. They will repair or replace your shutter clean lube and adjust your camera (CLA) its not as costly as most think. It don't cost any thing for asking. I sent my sisters point and shoot cost $62. to bring back to new condition (New lens and ccd). My nikkor lens $120. brought back to new condition after I droped it (New front lens, filter mount & CLA.) Save me over $600. Good luck

Just to add Precision camera isn't a camera store. They only provide service and repair

A POOR MANS SCANNER. If you don't have a way to import your negatives into your computer and you have a digital camera a tripod and one of the photoshop programs a light source with a white opaque top like for viewing slides or negatives or even sandwich a white plastic bag between two pieces of glass with a lamp shining up from the bottom, Lay your negative on top of your light source cover with a clean piece of glass take a picture straight on with your digital camera framing as much of the negative as possible import it into photoshop invert it and now your negative you took is now a positive and you can edit to your liking. You can even lay out a some tape to be able to quickly change your negatives for the next shot.

One more thing Remember the days when you got no feedback you didn't know how your pictures came out until the mailman slid them into your mailbox you run out rip open the envelop and quickly look at each picture with great excitment. I think that is what I loved about film.

I didn't have a big problem. My first didital camera was the Nikon D70S. 35mm and this Nikon were very close in quality. I love tech. But for me I know what each camera can do and which is best for each shoot. I've upgraded and retired my D70S. For weddings I shoot digital because I now can take 1500 to 2000 pictures and able to give my customer a Superior package with some medium film. Studio I used all, but mostly large format 4x5 and at times 8x10 or medium 6x4.5mm 6x7mm. So I haven't fully made the switch but now I spend more time in Photoshop and Lightroom and less in my wet room. I have over 150 film cameras and still use most of them. There is no equal to a large format view camera. A 35mm has to be enlarged 10x to get an 8x10, a 4x5 2x an 8x10 is there. My 11x17 WOW. Just think if a 4x5 enlarged the same as a 35mm to get an 8x10(10X) it would be a 40x50 print of same quality. Im done

[quote=JerseyGRRRL]uscollegebuy.com is legit. The programs are quite complete. They are also the latest versions. Yes you must submit your school name, student ID card and I forget what else. Within 24-48 hours I received my ok to purchase. But be forewarned: They will only sell you a program once. If, for example, you buy a new computer and don't have your license code, you may not re-purchase. Buying Lightroom 3 and CS5 was a really good move for me.[/quote

I Volunteer to teach 5th graders photoshop. I agree Lightroom and CS5 are great programs. I have been using the Eductor version form CS2 to CS5 and true you can only buy one Education program per School year. You can move them from one computer to another by going in and disabling that program and installing it on your new computer and just use the code on the program. The code given to you by Adobe to activate the Teacher program is only used once to activate that program number on the box. I just bought a new laptop and had no problem moving it. also before I got a second program for my desktop I could disable the one on my laptop and reactivate my desktop by reintering the program number and with out uninstalling the program and when I need to go back just reverse the operation. This is leagle as long as you don't have two activated at the same time. Adobe tech support can also help with the above.

I received an e-mail from Amazing Files. The subject read Whirl Wind Software downloadable outlet center. They are offering a full version of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 for Mac at $59.95.
Does anyone know if this is legitimate? I am new to all this, and right now I only use iPhoto on my Mac and would love to get something. Thanks Barbara

This is a $300.00 program the Student Teacher program from Adobe is $99.00. I would say it is a 30 day free download or Pirated copy. Ask them this question "Do I register this program with adobe" or better yet ask Adobe if it is real!!

How many photographers does it take to take one picture.... 1001, One to shoot the picture 1000 to tell you how you should have taken it. There is a lot of great input here and some not so great. There is a lot of talent out there, all you have to do is to ask, listen and not be afraid to try new ideas and choose what works for you and pass on your knowledge.

I agree with Ripley44224 you are the one that will compose the shot not the camera. Your camera is as fast as most pro film cameras of just a few years back. Your CMOS will record better than a 35mm film. Like he said go out and enjoy and shoot.

I take my camera with me every where I go, My wife calls it my life support system. Well I don't take it every where she will not let me take to bed.

As I read your question What you want to do is make the off camera flash fire and your pop up flash not fire. Well I shoot with a D300s and It will do as you want. So I went to nikonusa.com and pulled your D90 manual up and on page 188 it explains how to set up your camera to do this.Briefly it states " Choose built in flash mode Comander mode, you have three modes TTL, M and --, Select the -- then finish setting up your flash. In this mode your built in flash still needs to be up as if it would be used as a flash but will not flash but it still controls the remote flashes as normal ie TTL, manual via IR. Also you could use an SU800 at a cost of around $350. I still use the above mode a times. Good luck. Bruce

It is most likely Fungus. And any good repair shop would not even take them into their repair area. I wouldn't use them on any good camera. Spores can envade your camera and transfer into other lenses. I had a 400mm nikkor lens that I paid $3600.00 and it developed fungus and I took it to Precision Camera in Enfield CT and they wouldn't even take it in for an est. I called nikon and they wouldn't take it eather, after I told them it has Fungus. They told me they would take 10% off a new lens. Now I take better care of my investments I use desiccant pouches in my camera bag and when I put my lenses up. A very costly lesson. Fungus has the spots and also in later stages it looks like fine spider webs. It will eat into the coatings and etch the glass. There are some shady repairmen that say they can remove it. It will return.

Wow' that Fugus is scary do you think that comes from even a one time temperature change from cold to hot from going out side for a few shots or a serius water damage such as rain or a long term of someone having there equipment in poor storying conditions for a long period of time like a really damp basement. If so I'm glad I keep all my Lenses in a nice case and in a dry environment. What's your input on this with the Temperature?

Improper stowage is a big factor. Cool dry is the best stowage. Wiping down and keeping it clean. One repair man told UV kills it. Constant usage is good. I at times will pull out my View camera lenses and fire my strobe through it. Don't know if that does any good or not but it doesn't hurt. I was thinking of using a good UV light.

As for Repair The cost isn't all that bad. One day I droped my camera and lens. The camera came out fine but the filter ring and front element didn't make it. Well the new lens is only $495. A total bring it back to new was only $129.00 They opened it cleaned replaced any worn parts replaced the Filter ring and front element all for that one Price and took a week. Same for most cameras my sisters Olympus P&S had a brokenn LCD and the lens wouldn't retract it cost her $69.00 with a one year warranty. Most repair shops will give you a free est. of repair.
