The Dreaded “fEE” Error Message:

While vacationing, the shutter on my D80 locked and “fEE” flashed on the upper control panel. I thought of a similar past incident on my D70 which meant a failed shutter. I checked the menus but all I found was mirror locked “on”, and I could not lower it. The next day, the camera worked OK but then it continued to work on and off for the remainder of the vacation. At home, checking the manual’s error messages, a flashing “fEE” indicated “lens aperture ring not locked at minimum aperture”. The AHA moment! The aperture ring on my 24 mm AFD had slipped off minimum position thereby the error message and lock-up. However, when using my 55-200 mm G, there is no aperture ring and the camera worked fine.

A rookie mistake by someone taking pictures for over sixty years.
