Moose, If you need long lens for a one time occurrence and/or short amount of time, consider renting one. Arnold

I'm planning on a trip where I hope I will see some bears and other large wildlife. I'm not anxious to get near these animals and wonder what lens I would need to get a decent shot. I have a Tamron 18-270mm lens and know that I can use that, but the image would be pretty small since I don't plan on getting that close. Do you think that in PP I can create a quality larger image, or is a longer lens going to be the solution? If so, what lens would you recommend, keeping in mind that my budget is not unlimited. Thanks for your help.

If you are using RAW you will need to do some post processing to all your pictures. If you use jpg format you can set you camera to some limit enhancements to them. Yes, capturing a very image definitely helps reducing the PP time which means good lighting, good composition, and camera settings. Arnold

Grandpa Bob, Your alignment of the 3 images came excellent. I don't what your exposures were, but they look like they weren't enough to get detail in the shadows of the tree. Also I was wondering what caused the 2 spots on top of this photo. Arnold

Susan, I have a website on Godaddy, but really don't use it to post my photographs. I use SmugMug.com to post all my images. Hi Everyone, I am looking for the best priced website provider. I have checked into a few and it's hard to know which is best. I had decided on GoDaddy.com but just clicking on the option (the premium package) and I found myself having additional chargers and I thought I was getting the one that offered everything for a certain price.

Susan, First SmugMug doesn't accept PayPal. If you click on this link http://www.smugmug.com/photos/photo-sharing-features/, you will see the price and features it offers you. If you decide to go with them, I can get you a small discount. I went with SmugMug because it was an excellent turnkey website that you could post and sell your photos on. Arnold

Does anyone use GoDaddy? I sure could use some help with this, any and all advise is welcomed!!!

Thanks, Susan

I went to your website and have to say....OMG the B&W of the bird with the reflection is so very beautiful!!

Is Smugmug reasonably priced? Why do you prefer it over GoDaddy? Can people purchase through Smugmug using Paypal?

Millismote, Yes, this is definitely an Osprey. I live not to far from the area you took this photograph and I tell you there hundreds os nesting Osprey this time of year. I apologize for the quality of the picture but this bird was really skittish and wouldn't let me get close. I have a problem focusing on small obects at distance, (old eyes). Canon 50D 24-105 L IS I took this on Merritt Island Fl near the Banana river.

Look at Rick Sammon's Website. I just took a 6 hour seminar with him, and he was excellent. He also does field workshops. Arnold

Glen, I have been using Adobe Lightroom 3 to catalog/organize my photo (over 40,000) for the last 3 years. Also I'm able to do 85% of my post processing using LR3.
You can try it for free for 30 days to see if you like it. There are many websites that help out training on using it. Arnold

Hi there. I am a novice and from over the years i have around 10,000 existing photos all loaded on a mac book pro and i would like to start organizing them and printing some too. the mac book pro where i initially copy the photos. this is where all 10K photos live. occasionally i back them up on a WD portable usb 2.0 drive. my questions are as follows:

1. if i want to have ample space on an external drive does any one have any rule of thumb to suggest what i buy?

2. when i owned a windows computer, i bought adobe elements 7 which i found to be very difficult to do basic stuff on. recently a friend suggestion lightroom as a way to organize and do basic stuff that would have better organizing and editing than i currently have on my mac book pro. Can anyone comment on this or any other photo management software?

fyi, i own a Nikon D90 and shoot my kid's sports, landscapes and anything else just for fun.

i am sure i left some information out above that might help you with giving me advice.

Thank you in advance for any advice or feedback.

EarthArts, Thank you very much for your comments. What I learned from this exercise and feedback from most everybody who responded to request, is that I really need to do is learn more on how to be more artistic in my post processing when I'm trying to make major modifications to my photos. Arnold

I used a Nikon D300 with a Nikon 500mm f-4 manual focus lens to take this photo. Camera was set-up to ISO 640, speed 1/2000, f-stop f-5.6. It was a cloudy, day so I had very poor lighting.

I used OnOne Perfect Mask and their background to add the sky to this photo, and further enhanced it with Photoshop CS4 this photo.

I would appreciate your critiques and feedback how I could improve this photo. Thanks, Arnold

Arnold, I would have to agree with English Wolf on most items. That said, to me the focus does not look completely sharp, could just be the small size posted here. As for the sky, when we view a bird positioned like this, against the sky, we see only the bird as our focal point - the sky is secondary. Your image with the blue sky and clouds have the clouds in focus and competing with the bird for our attention. Using a 500mm lens would not produce clouds that sharp in the background. If possible try using a blur filter on the sky image in photoshop before merging.

My own recommendation is wait for LR3 and PS CS6 come out have your son buy at student price. Mean while down load LR4 Beta which is free and learn how to use it. Download CS5 free trail version and learn how use that. The PS CS5 is good for a month. You also may want look at PS Elements which is much cheaper than CS5/6. Arnold

Arnold, you did a perfect sky replacement.......and perversely I prefer the original image with the white sky to the perfectly good blue.

I'll have to agree - it looks like an outdoor flash / postcard with the added sky - IMO - I Love the bird - I want this much feather detail - and in bad light, no less!

Marcomarks, Thanks for your inputs. Your comments really made me think that I must think more like an artist and that is something I'm not very good at. Arnold

It's possible that people don't like the blue sky because the bird is sitting there in space with too much sky. The lack of any other object in the photo to create perspective and size in the mind makes the combination almost unrealistic.

Personally I like the sky version and agree with your preference. Since you can insert a sky that well you might consider adding some foliage of a tree, maybe as a natural frame up the left side, or under/behind the lower portion of the bird and up the left side a bit, to make it not be so stark and alone in the clouds.

Just a 2 cent opinion... Nice shot, by the way.

Since you have no qualms about adding things to your photos try adding a couple of catch lights to the eyes, that will bring them to life, instead of two black holes in its head. Great PP work I do like what you did.
