Yes, this bird has several names.

THIS bird may have many names....Julie, Frank, Pete, Steve, Pam... many names, but a species only has one (common) name, and one Latin name.

Quick question..... are you into used camera sales? I've noticed that you have posted dozens or more sales. Please explain.

This is the 9th camera listed since October. Different cameras, different shutter counts, plus many other Nikon accessories. Is this private party sales, or do you sell for a store that does trade ins???

A very valid question. I have, in a camera store demo'd a Nikon 200-500 right next to a Tamron 150-600. While both can be hand held (I am 55, a bit out of shape, but not weak), I found I was concerned with the weight of both. The Tamron was lighter, but still relatively heavy. I then rented the Tamron (granted a G1, but very similar in weight) for a week's trip to FL.

I found that yes, it can be used hand held, but at maximum focal length it was very difficult to keep the single focus point I use for wildlife directly where I wanted it. I did find significant relief using a good monopod (sans any type of head), and got great images. I found that carrying the "rig" over my shoulder ala the image of a hobo with a stick over his shoulder, was a very easy way to transport the camera and lens on trails.

So, the answer is complicated. I will own one of these long zoom lenses, but I realize that my monopod will be a fairly constant companion while that combination is in use.

Here are a couple of examples:

How did you manage to get that pic with so few people. I know some who have spent literally hours standing on that floor in line to check in. It is amazing. The Palazzo is very similar but in different colors pallets.

I really think the "out of focus" issue is a lens softness issue that is exacerbated (yes I used that big word) by the distance. I'm not sure with that combination of equipment you could have really expected much better. All gear has limits somewhere....

f8, 1/500, ISO 400 Pretty solid set up. Other than driving the truck into the water to get closer, not much else. You were pushing the limits of your gear I think. I hope you don't mind, but I took the liberty to do a really quick crop and SLIGHT exposure adjustment. I realize this is to my liking and might not please everyone. Overall, for a "drive by" a pretty solid result IMHO

Good idea - maybe. There is a big difference between theory and practice. I've picked up a lot of the "rules" of photography, but that doesn't mean I can produce outstanding results. I'll give advice based on what I've learned, even though I'm not a prize-winning photographer.

All sorts of professionals rely on coaches and teachers to make them better, even though those coaches and teachers are not good enough to be professionals.

Advice based on your learning (at whatever level) is way more valuable than opinions that paint with too broad of a brush and tend to dimish others opinions/experiences.

We are here to learn and share.... I appreciate your input.

I think it is "original post" or "original poster"

I am always amazed at how strongly some tend to share their opinions and/or experiences. A recent example was a post regarding auto ISO. To me, the OP was very genuine is asking when might be the correct time to use auto ISO. The responses were varied. Some gave very thoughtful and detailed examples of when they used auto ISO and WHY (that is the important part right?).... Others gave very strong opinions of NEVER or ALWAYS, or likened anyone who might use this feature as "less of a photographer" (whatever) than they were, or if they didn't use it all the time, they were just not smart enough to figure it out.

So, having seen this type of "discussion" before, I tend to do the following:
1) If someone has such a strong opinion, I make sure they are respectful before going any further
2) If their opinion is so strong, I go to find their results. I look to see if they have a link in the signature
area (at the bottom of their post in small writing)and click on that, or I click on their user name and
that takes me to their information page, I scroll down to their history and there is a heading "posts
created". If they have created posts, I click on that number and then scroll thru their post history and
see their results.
3) THEN I spend some time looking at results. If they have results that I desire (subject, exposure,
composition, et.al.) then their opinion is validated and I consider using it. If they have no images
posted, I simply consider their opinion less than acceptable and an example someone who really has
shown no proof that their opinions have any validity. (POSER!!)

I can think of several participants here that I really appreciate their opinions, their results, and their willingness to humbly share. I am sure I will leave some out, but: Regis, Steve Perry, burkphoto, Gene51, Chg_Canon, Linda from Maine, rmalarz, Grandpa..... and many others. I find that by weeding out those that share opinions rather than information that I learn much more and am much happier with the time I spend on the HOG.

Thanks to all who share and care

OMG.... Wakadohatchee.... it is right there!!! Easy boardwalk access and a ton of all type of nesting birds. It is on Jog Rd. Just north of the Publix. Green cay is about 3 miles west of Wakadohatchee. Both are free. Get there early morning for easy parking and great light. You can link to my recent posts to see results. All of those images were captured with a 300mm lens.

The name calling is cathartic for me and I have a feeling it is for others also. We have to have some place to go to air our frustrations. There was a time where I respected all women but it’s apparent to me that all women are not deserving of respect. Men are really getting the shaft by women these days. It makes me sick to see it when men are accused of something that was alleged to have happened 30 years ago and they lose their reputation, job and livelihood over a vague accusation from a feminist b***h. We men have to stick together. I have no problem calling it like it is.

Oh Oh.... this was an instance where hitting the send button might have been a mistake. Individual "prospective" customers can be complained about easily, but this was a very broad and VERY inaccurate post....Hoping you re-read this and make adjustments to this.

I always enjoy your surfing images. This set is very cool and very well done. #3 is an amazing image, but I was drawn to the 2 surfers in #4.

Good stuff! I like all of them. Nice lens too!
Did you crop much?

I did some cropping, but nothing extreme. Basically proportion to 8x10 and then crop to help with composition....

These were taken with a 150-600 Tamron G1 mounted on my D7500. My goal on this trip was just to get thru the learning curve of such a long lens and get sharp focus while retaining IQ with acceptable noise.

You comments and helpful critiques are most welcome.
