There is definely more to shooting PRO Sports than just the click of the shutter. But as they say, practice makes perfect. Go out to your local High schools and see if they will let you shoot.

With all the stuff going on with strangers in high schools these days he may not be permitted to photo any kids unless his kids are in the sports. The schools have to know a person or the agency that sent them to do photographs. Even I make sure I intro myself to the coaches and the officials I meet just so that they know who I am and why I am there. It makes them feel more at ease with me. Depends on the school some may say no and some may say yes if he volunteers to help the teams and coaches.

Having problems using SD card for upgrades on Win 10. I can get upgrades to download on the computer but can not transfer the info on the card. So, I thought the USB might be another route. Contacted a repair shop and they stated not possible. So any thoughts of selling the body are probably up in smoke.

I had no problems updating my Nikon D7200 using the card. Go back to the site you downloaded the updates from and read their instructions again as I had a similar problem with my D5200 and once I read the instructions and understood what I did wrong it worked.

If you shoot full frame with 30 MP and crop to 2/3 of that in post, do you get an equivalent 20 MP edited photo?

Check the properties pf the finished shot after saving it. In properties it will tell under details what the final pixels are. As well as the dpi in horizontal and vertical. There is no guessing that way.

My intent is not to pop your bubble but, becoming a professional photographer today is a fairly tough thing to do. Unless you have lots of experience and work for someone else, the odds are big time not in your favor. And realistically, you shouldn't call yourself a photopro unless you really are.
There's a whole lot more to being a professional photographer than selling a few photographs. A professional photographer is a person who makes their income from photography. I have a friend who is a pro photographer and to make ends meet he also works in a camera store. You see, today, anyone can buy a $500 digital camera, get cards printed and call themselves a pro photographer. Doesn't mean they are, it just means they are pro wanna be's.
You want to be a pro that shoots pro football. What else do you want to shoot because pro football is pretty much limited to 5 maybe 6 months out of 12. What will you do the other 6 months?! You will need a pro grade camera. Something that can be used in all kinds of weather because not all pro football teams play indoors. Your camera will need to be sturdy, something that can take a little abuse. And now for the real expensive part, the lens. You will need a pro grade zoom lens with a lot of reach, and that will probably cost you more than the camera body. Take a real close look at the guys on the sidelines next Sunday. You will see a whole lot of big long off white (actually, light grey) lenses that cost anywhere from $2,000 to $13,000 USD.
I've shot sporting events and non-sporting events, like weddings, big parties, small parties, corporate events and many other things since I got into photography over 45 years ago and I've even made enough money to buy some new equipment, but, I don't call myself a professional photographer because it has never been my primary source of income.
Best of luck in your endeavors but, straight out of the gate you're setting your self up for failure buy looking for ways to get around the photographers tools issue. You will need pro grade tools to do a pro job and even good used tools don't come cheap.

You are right about the gear and the fact that only shooting football will surely limit his income. I am a pro myself. Actually a sort of retired pro. 1500 to 1600 weddings and film went away then to get back into photography I spent several thousand dollars on gear and called one of the studios I shot for years ago. Right back to work I went. I hate retirement time as there is more fun to take pictures than the fun of sitting at home in a chair watching the TV. Again I shoot school activities primarily sports. The better and more gear I have the more jobs I find just like it was in film days. The more experience you have the more you can freelance out your talents. You are quite right about the equipment cost and your time donations to become known.

Okay, well, let me ask you. I did think about that very thing but I was concerned about noise using such a high ISO. If I can use what I have and not spend an additional 12 to 13 hundred dollars, I'm all for it. Could you please address the high ISO and the possible grainy photo?

Thanks,
A. T.

I wish people would stop calling the noise grain since it is actually digital noise as there is no grain in digital.

Two thoughts. After all that wear, I would have serviced it. Secondly, the culprit could be the auto-focus. I found that with sports, extraneous players and officials fool the evaluative auto-focus system so use a small zone pattern instead.

Thanks. It just might need the servicing. Only service agency close to me is K&R in Ky or Dodd Camera in Cincinnati. Are there better agencies out there close to Cincinnati Ohio?

I would like you guys and gals opinion. I have a D3400 with an assortment of lens; 35mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8, 16-80mm f/2.8-4, 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 and a Tamron 150-600mm G2. My passion is wildlife and landscape; however, I have a ton of grandkids that I love photographing. I am considering the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 because I don't have a zoom for low light situations. When I'm in an auditorium with low lighting and I'm not able to get close to the stage and a tripod is not applicable to the situation, I think the Sigma would solve my problem. Any thoughts concerning this matter? I choose the Sigma because compared to the Nikon and Tamron, it's considerably less expensive and from the reviews, it's not a bad low light zoom for the price.

Thanks,
A. T.

I went with the Sigma 70 to 300. I shot so many shots with it that I finally replaced it with a Nikon 50 to 300. The sigma was performing very well and still does but it seemed to hang up and not focus quick enough on some shots leaving the shot out of focus. Might have been my handling or it was just too much wear I caused shooting that many sport shots for 3 years with it. Since it also does macro I keep it around for that.

I have noticed that most professional photographers find a camera they like and stick with it. The brand doesn't seem to matter as much as what they get used to.

I have also noticed that photographers who are really good can take better pictures with their cellphone than I could with a Leica.

I have shot with many a film camera as a pro and my early days as a beginner. I eventually settled in film on the Bronica SQA versus the Hasselblad and the Canon vs the Nikon. Sold all but the Bronica when I knew film was going out as I was by then rarely using the Canon gear. The Bronica sits on a shelf. Replaced now in the digital world with Nikon. Many lenses and at least 3 bodies are now Nikon. As to why Nikon? Only because I found out more about Nikon than I did about Canon when I decided to buy the gear. Research to find what the other pros were using was also what told me to go Nikon instead of Canon. The photog's using Canon that I knew seemed to think there is too much of a difference in the files saved in the camera between Nikon and Canon. I think other than file format in RAW there may be a difference but not enough to worry about. In jpeg they seem to me to be damned identical. Once you invest in one camera brand and have more than the lens that came with it you become a part of that camera brand since the lenses and the bodies have to match up. Even the off brand lenses are made to match the bodies of cameras. So once you have the initial investment the only way to change over is to sell what you had, take the loss, and move on to the one brand you now want. Not willing to take the loss and Nikon gives me what I want I stay with Nikon. Even if I loved using the old Kodak Tourist for sports shooting back in high school as well as my old 2 1/4 square Mamiya twins lens reflex, both of course film cameras. With the twins lens Mamiya I could actually shoot pin hole shots by drilling a tiny hole in the body cover of that camera since it had a film cover built in to change lenses could be flipped up to make the pinhole shot and flipped down to cover the film again.

SOrry I prefer to be professional and use only my images. As an artist I find using other peoples images in my work makes my work a fraud because I did not create the borrowed work. All that free stuff also devalues the work of true professionals.

And what exactly is wrong with shopping locally in your own community? - provides jobs there at the very least. Your sales taxes provide a portion of the funds used by local governments to provide services you and your neighbors rely on - it's all a part of being in a society.

Nothing is wrong with the local store but since digital came into it's own there has been only one major store left in the city and with no competition you get what they want you to get.

Who really has time to watch a video. I prefer paper data as I can read faster than the video run time. Maybe it is because I understand spec sheets better than most people. I just wonder do doctors before surgery check out the operation in video before they operate?

I received this as an email this morning. This is not a matter of me pushing Service Photo - although it is definitely my photo equipment and supply store of choice - but a comment on the state of the marketplace, related to Internet purchasing. Moreover, could this mark the resurgence of the retail camera store?

Important Message Regarding Sales Tax

Starting today, many large internet sellers of photo & video gear will be required to charge sales tax to their customers in many states - including customers from Maryland.

As MD's only specialty camera store, we've always worked hard to keep our prices competitive. Our prices for most major brands of gear & accessories are identical to those of our largest online competitors. Still, many Maryland photographers have purchased their cameras, lenses, lighting, & accessories from outside MD, simply to avoid the 6% sales tax. This disadvantage has now been erased, and we are now on an equal playing field with our online, out-of-state competitors.

We're hoping that this new development will allow us to serve more Maryland photographers than ever before. Of course, we'd love to welcome everyone to our Baltimore showroom & present our wide selection of new & used camera gear. But, we're equally excited to ship camera gear to photographers from Western MD, the Eastern Shore, & other outlying areas of MD who have traditionally ordered from sources out-of-state. (Ground Shipping is always free for orders over $50)

Our business outside MD is very small, & we do not need to charge sales tax to those customers at this time. We will monitor this situation continuously, and keep you informed if anything changes.

Please contact burke@servicephoto.com with any questions about the new sales tax changes, or anything else. We appreciate the opportunity to serve photographers throughout the USA, including our home state of MD, more than ever before!
