Many of the lenses are not good. Some, like Oloclip, seem to be good quality but most of the good quality lenses do require a special case. I have tried some, but they seem to me to be too much trouble.

Contrary to what some say, recent phone cameras can be very good and can produce very good images in the right hands. The old adage of 'the best camera you can have is the one you have with you' comes into play. A person with a good knowledge of photography can produce a good image with a wide range of equipment.

Indeed, I would go as far as saying there are times when I can produce a better photo with my iPhone 7 Plus, than I can with my DSLR. It's a case of horses for courses.

Currently, I don't think the telephoto clip-on lenses are going to do much for you unless it's the only option you have. The fish eyes are quite fun.

My own feeling is that I'd rather spend the time and effort using one of the optional camera apps (Halide, Camera+, 645PRO, the Lightroom cc camera etc) to get interesting images than try and play with the optics.

Certainly on the iPhone 7plus (and I'm sure on many others) the camera is a VERY good device and in the hands of a competent photographer can produce good photos. It's also good at allowing people who know little about the technical aspects of photography to produce excellent images. This in turn stimulates their interest and leads to a greater understanding of what it means to create good images.

I've bought bodies, lenses and flash units refurbished from Canon. All excellent.

No one ever mentions that this subscription model was started I think by Gillette with razors. You buy and own the handle, but then are tied to getting heads that fit the razor, until they change the handle and you start again with new technology. Or you keep a cut-throat and stay with ancient technology and need a great deal of skill. ...or buy an electric razor, and you're into the static technology thing again.

...or grow a beard.

Admission: I have Canon, and am very happy with it.
If you have Canon equipment, it does make sense to seriously consider staying with that brand. I used to be a Pentax user but after much research, swapped my Pentax gear (and Bronica medium format equipment) for Canon. I'd been very happy with the previous stuff, but have been very pleased with Canon.

That said, asking this question is like saying Ford or GM, Mercedes or BMW, iOS or Android, PC or Mac. You will never get totally objective views except when commentators say they won't comment!

The decision has to be yours based on hands on research and what YOU want/need/like.

I really wish the moderators would state that that there will be no Nikon/Canon threads, or that all created will be placed in a 'bin' pinned to an obscure region of the forum!

I found the same thing when I installed Mac Sierra. I have used the VueScan software, which is fine, but a bit complicated. Then I searched on the web and found I could download older versions of the canon software. One of these works fine. I'm not near my Mac currently, so will post the version number later.

However, I find I'm using the scanner less and less as I find other ways to scan and copy slides, prints and documents.

I too find that not being able to use my 'old' and serviceable scanner is a pain, but recognize that it's getting long in the tooth. My other bits of kit have been upgraded, so I suppose I will need to upgrade this at some point. That's technology progress I guess.

Victoria Brampton, in her latest newsletter has a piece about other ways to scan slides, prints and negatives using kit we already have, without using a scanner. She indicates it may be faster and better too, so the OP may find that useful.

Very relevant - basically he was asking if he's saving RAW, why save JPEG also.

JPEG is a fine file type, but now getting old. It's inevitable that it will be replaced with something with more compression and probably better quality. It's progress. It's irrelevant to bring RAW into the discussion as the two file types are for different purposes.

Or even the new 8.5" which is reputed to be larger than you'd think!

It seems to be very good, in use on my iPad Air 2. Looking forward to trying it on an iPad Pro 10.5 with iOS 11.

Following on from BJW, you could also try the new Affinity Photo app for the iPad which is reputedly excellent. I've just downloaded a copy at their intro price and pin to play with it on a trip to the UK I'm just about to make.

If you use Lightroom cc you can upload the RAW files from your camera into Apple Photos. Then Lightroom cc will upload the RAWs from that to Adobe cloud, and they will upload to your Mac at home (and any storage you have there).

You can also carry an iXpand drive with you - it's tiny and plugs into your iPad's lightning port as well as a USB port. You can then back up your RAW images from Photos onto that, giving you another back up. You can then delete the images from Photos and gain the space back.

Very simple.

The main risk here is putting large numbers of batteries together in the hold of an aircraft. Knowing that batteries can self ignite, and then produce their own oxygen could cause a major conflagration in the hold. Fire suppression systems could not cope. That's a major safety worry that's been highlighted by pilots and airlines.

Homeland Security and by extension, the US Government, don't care about international business or world tourism. This extends to other governments in UK and Australia who are considering the same policy.

Yes, we must combat terrorism but we must do so in sensible and considered ways.

I believe the Israeli government and El Al have operated safely for many years with regards to civil aviation, but they operate different screening policies.

The Sandisk iXpand drive has a USB at one end and a lightning connector at the other. You could store photos on that and show them on any tablet or iPad that has one of those connectors. Up to 256GB.

Or use any one of a clutch of cloud storage. ICloud, Google photos, Dropbox, etc etc.

The new iPad is a good price for a reliable bit of kit, but others are obviously available.

I use an iPad exclusively when traveling, and it's not a big storage iPad. I use the Apple lightning to SD card reader. Really easy.

I upload Raw files to Apple Photos. Then, as I use Lightroom Mobile, the LR uploads immediately to LR. If I've got a good internet connection the files go to Adobe CC. If the net connection isn't great it doesn't matter as the files remain in LR. I then copy or backup the files from Apple photos to a Sandisk iXpand drive. Once on the iXpand, I can delete the files from Photos (always remembered to delete the 'recently deleted' photos too). That frees up the space on the iPad. I keep the files on the SD cards until I get home too. On LR Mobile, remember to empty the cache and that will reduce space too.
The kit needed (SD to lightning adaptor and iXpand drive) takes up minimum room. There is no need for a laptop, external drives or any associated power packs, adaptors or anything similar. You have a number of redundant back ups - Camera SD Cards, iXpand Drive, Lightroom Mobile, Adobe CC and if you want, you can upload Apple Photos to iCloud too. Even if you don't have a decent internet connection, you still have the SD cards and the iXpand at the very minimum.
All this means you can still do post production using the iPad too.
I regret that too many people see problems with using the iPad in this situation, when there really are very few. It's worked for me for quite a while.
