Nice shot. What equipment and settings. I keep trying different settings and all I get are individual stars.

I keep reading about low pass filters (anti-aliasing filters) and am curious about what they are and what they do. I did a search on UHH and found several somewhat answers as well as reviewing a link posted referencing a Wikipedia article. I am now more confused than ever. Can someone please explain what this is and what it is for in simple terms. Thanks.

Hi Everyone - I have recently been thrown into a photography job because I was the "lady with the big camera". I'm doing Horse Show photography and do the Yearbooks for the local horse clubs. I actually love it - but I wish I was better. My first move is to get a FF. My new Photographer colleagues all have switched to Nikon. I'm the last out there with my big white lens. I was wondering is it really worth selling all my Canon gear to make the switch? Are the images that much better with the Nikon?
Are the colors that much better with the D610? Please let me know - THANKS

Whatever decision you do, it will be the right one. I have both a Nikon D600 and a Canon 6D and I thoroughly enjoy both of them I primarily use the Canon only because that is the one I have the most lenses for. I also, unfortunately, have the same problem as you do. I like equipment and I buy it if I can afford it. Luckily, I am in the position that I can do that. at least until my wife finds out how much I do spend.

New to UHH. My original "real" camera was a Canon film body, with kit lenses, after which I bought the Rebel Xs and used it happily for several years. More recently,I have been shooting with a Panasonic Lumix FZ47, which is great for traveling. I travel a lot, and shoot landscapes, people candids, some flower closeups. I have been doing (way too much) reading on what's out there today, and have pretty much settled on upgrading to Canon 70D. Currently, Sam's Club has a kit deal that includes the 70D, with an 18-55 IS STM and 55-250 US USM, and I'm about ready to go for it. What am I missing?

Camera is a very good cam ER a very good camera. You will like it. As to the lenses. I use them on a Canon SL-1 and am very happy with them. A better lens would be the 18-135 STM but what you get in the kit is a good beginning. I say keep the lenses and add to them later. As to the first discussion on plastic mounts. I had the same concerns initially but have found no problems.

Can someone please tell me if "Wasabi" replacement batteries are compatible/reliable for Canon cameras? Anyone has had bad experience with this brand?

I have been using Wasabi's omn my Canon's, Nikons, Fuji and Kodak. No problems whatsoever. Great value. For Canon I am using on SL-1, 7D, 6D, Nikon D600.

Having been a photographer for 42 years longer than I have been a camera store owner, my "setups" come from actual need and use in the field. They have nothing to do with selling anything. Have I asked anyone to buy any of this gear from me? Or from anyone for that matter?

Amen. Very professional all the time. Never once pushed the business. But, by not doing that, would make me want to stop in if in the Billings area to say hi and if I have any needs at the time throw some business his way. A great UHH member and always giving great advice and never judgmental. One of the best on the forum. Many thanks for your membership and participation. I have learned much from your input.

As already mentioned, there are pre-made mounts available for putting a sight on a hotshoe, but then you lose the use of the hotshoe. That in itself is a good reason to come up with the alternative mount for the red dot setup.

Oh well. There goes my great invention idea and my chance to become a millionaire. Would have been great. Just think, all those late night "As seen on TV" ads with some really cute gal dressed in camo as the salesperson. Makes me want to get two. Wait though, order in the next 15 minutes you do get two. Just pay separate shipping and handling. Back to the drawing board. Still would like to see the picture though.

I use a Red Dot sight often when shooting a 600mm or 800mm lens because the FOV is so narrow that it is sometimes hard to acquire your subject quickly. Mine is switchable from red to blue to green with 3 different intensities of each so it works in almost any weather conditions.
I first rigged it up to mount in the hotshoe but quickly found out that was a bad idea as it made using the viewfinder very difficult. I then rigged it up on a Stroboframe flash bracket so it is directly above the viewfinder a few inches and that works a LOT better. It does help in subject acquisition, and I get a lot of funny looks when using it too.

OK MT, I have an idea. I like your fix for the mount but what about putting together something like a picatinny rail mounted to a universal hot shoe attachment that could then hold a variety of red dot as well as other sights. I'm sure us MT guys could come up with something like that and make the state proud. I can see it now, a Trijicon ACOG on a Canon 1DX with a 150-600 lens. Is it a camera or a disguised weapon. Any artists out there?

I would like to talk about the difference between the two. To learn about both. To learn about what all the letters mean in the Nikon lens names. And to find which is better or if its just preferences.

Will Love to see how long this will go on.

Would love to here your thoughts on your camera.

Thank you.

I shoot both and like both. My opinion - start with budget. Don't go overoverboard if you don't have the funds. I started (years ago) low end and quickly went to midrange. For Canon I like the 7D (or 7Dmkll) for a crop camera. I also have an SL-1 which is my quick grab it camera if on the run. For Canon FF I use a 6D and very happy with it. I don't do many action shots. For Nikon I use a FF D600 (D610 the latest iteration). Again extremely happy with it. The D750 is a little pricier but also a solid player. I never saw the need for me to get the Nikon 800's or Canon 1's & 5's. Too much money for not much return for my purposes. Whatever you choose enjoy it and take great pictures.

I have purchased second hand from the Amazon store. No problem. Probably would not buy from overseas

I have the Opteka which is the same. I like it. Yes, it is not L glass but for the price you can't beat it. It is a fun lens and will get you really up close. Use it in daytime. Needs good light and higher iso but will take adequate to good pictures. It is not a craps lens.

I'll be spending a few days in NYC, and plan on taking my Canon T3i. I want to limit myself to no more than a few lenses. I have the following to choose from:
EF-S 10-18 f4.5/5.6 IS STM;
EF-S 18-55;
EF-s 55-250;
EF-S 50mm f1.8;
EF 50mm f 1.4;
EF 40mm pancake;
EF 100mm f2.8;
EF 70-200 F4 L (non IS);
Tokina 11-16 f2.8.

I'm thinking the 10-18, 18-55, 55-250. Might only go with two.
Any thoughts!
Thanks.

As to the real question, I agree with your choices. They will do everything you might want to capture. One suggestion would be that depending where you go just bring the lens you need. IE, if it is a museum day you probably would not need the 55-250.

The fight on UHH over Canon and Nikon has been going on as long as I can remember. Frankly, they're both outstanding camera systems, so, why does it really matter? Take either one it becomes the photographer than is the difference.

IMHO Nobody cares. To me any camera is a good camera. Have fun with it. As to the topic, as I said, nobody care. But it sure is fun to read some of the discussions.
