In my years at Woods Hole, I used PVA tape to protect delicate instruments, knowing it would vanish soon as they were submerged. I daydreamed of making raincoats--or condoms.

Vintage Lens -- Sticky Body Surface

I am wondering if the rubber is, in effect, becoming unvulcanized as it ages. If so, maybe revulcanize it? My dim recall is that acetic acid was the magic ingredient.
