I wonder if your computer came loaded with bloat ware which vendors install to make a little extra money? Have you run Windows Task Manager? It will tell you what applications are running and how much cpu and memory they are using. It can be started by pressing cntrl-alt-delete or by right clicking in the task bar at the bottom of the screen.
Another website specifically dedicated to computers is Tomshardware.com

I recently built a new desktop computer on which I installed a Samsung 256Gb SSD drive as well as a conventional hard drive. Running Windows 8.1, I installed the OS and all programs on the SSD and found the boot time to be most impressive. Programs start up faster than on my four-year old Windows 7 desktop but anecdotally I haven't found programs to run any faster. Perhaps some UHHers have actually run tests on run times? The only test I ran was on a negative scan using an Epson 550 with Epson software and the results were identical. Certainly not a definitive test but my general sense is that programs run no faster.
Interested to hear experiences of others!

Oops! Just noticed your other post. Looks as if you have solved your problem. I am using Windows 7 and 8.1 so perhaps updates are more compatible.

Regarding your problems with Elements 11 and the P7800, have you tried updating Elements? I had the same problem when I bought my D7100 and a simple update brought in a later version of Camera Raw and then everything was fine. Give it a try! 😄

Yes, take more photos. Theoretically, you should set up the one perfect shot and then take it, but life isn't like that. That was a major limitation of shooting film. Now, we can call it an advantage or a skill builder, but it was really just a limitation.

Digital lets us shoot from this angle and then from that angle; at a fast shutter speed and slow. For an action scene, one shot will never be enough, unless you're very, very lucky.

Every instructional video I have watched has stressed shooting freely from various angles and various settings.

Imagine if we had started with digital and then went to film, with twelve exposure on a role. I doubt that many would see that as an advantage.

I think that the main reason that I have such a low shutter count is that I generally don't go out with the specific aim of taking photos but instead take the camera when going out for a walk or hike. Usually my wife accompanies me and although she is patient I am reluctant to spend too much time stopping and taking photos from multiple angles.
We spent 3 weeks in Florida in Jan/Feb and I took a few BIF photos that would have benefited from a burst. Most photos resulted in fuzzy birds probably due to camera movement. More experience with the D7100 would have told me to use a higher shutter speed.
Jerry, I have seen composition videos espousing the value of taking photos from multiple angles. Some of the examples seem to have resulted in unexceptional photos in spite of the extraordinary efforts!
I have been pleased with responses to what I feared might have been a rather frivolous post. Also glad I am not alone!
Thanks all!

Thanks for all the responses. Part of my problem (if it is a problem!) is that I have too many hobbies and interests besides photography. I could definitely benefit from taking advantage of the burst feature of my camera especially for my grandkids' sports and BIF.
It seems that I am not completely alone in my sparse numbers of shutter activations but probably in the minority! The more I use the the D7100 the more adept I should become.

I have been shooting mostly digital since about 2010. I have used 35mm and medium format cameras since 1970. It has proven difficult for me to get away from the film mindset of being frugal with the number of images I take.

The solution is obvious - take more photos! But I am interested if others have had similar experiences?

For example, I bought my D7100 in late June 2014 and to date have only taken 500 photos.

Perhaps your firmware was already up to date?

It's 1328 it's 3.16 * 420mm. 3.16=square root of 10.

This is correct. To get 10% area we need to multiply the linear dimensions by square root of .1 which is .316. Thus the ratio of linear dimensions between cropped image and non cropped image is 1/.316=3.16. Equivalent focal length (in terms of field of view - we have been reminded countless times that the actual focal length doesn't change!!) must be 3.16x420=1328.
Interesting question over morning coffee.

I can't find the adobe ACR upgrade in my computer even when I downloaded it again.
Sorry, I just can't figure out computers. I am still using my old LG flip phone.

I do have Corel Pro X6 and it opens raw files easily.

Yes, the canon program works really good also, But I can't figure out how to save anything yet.

So, I'm getting there.

Just open Elements and you will see a list of menu items across the top of the screen. Select "help" and the drop down menu will have "Updates" as an item. Just click that and Camera Raw should be updated.
I just tried it and it worked for me!
Good luck.

I purchased a new T5i Canon Camera. My Elements 11 will not open the raw images. Do I need to buy a new Elements 14?

Yep, these manufacturers know how to $stick-it$ to you.
Every time you make a change, you spend the dollars to upgrade programs and more equipment.

Have you tried to update your Elements 11? When I bought my D7100 I had the same problem. ACR was updated to accept new format RAW files.

Check the Nikon P7800.
Major features: 28-200 focal range equivalent,
external flash shoe, ability to shoot raw, ability to shoot fully manual, view finder as well as a nice size screen, screw thread lens which allows filters and lens hoods to be attached, articulating screen that flips up and down 180 degrees as well as back to front 180 degrees, small enough to fit in a jacket pocket. I had looked for an ideal small camera for about 5 years and this one met all my requirements. Also since you have a 7100, you may have a large flash you can use with this camera. The retail price on this camera is above 500 but Adorama had some Nikon factory referbs for 349.00. I bought one of these and there wasn't a hint of a scratch. Mine came as clean and nice as if it were brand new.

Thanks Bridges. I checked the P7800 and although it has many great features it really exceeds my size constraints. The Panasonic LX100 and Sony RX100 do also but they have much larger sensors to compensate. Still thinking!!

Thanks. I'm sure that we will produce another blog like the one in my original post. We have found that documenting our adventures is very gratifying and allows us to revisit our experiences in a concise location.
