I hear all the time, "My computer is too slow". Well I have an Intel i7-2600k and never really thought it slow until I installed my first Solid State drive. OMG! Boots in 18 Seconds and software loads in seconds. Lightroom 5 is ready to use in 5 seconds. Turns out my processor was being held back by my hard drive. I never considered a Solid State drive as I never trusted them and heard horror stories of them dying within months of being installed. What changed my mind was these drives have got VERY reliable. I have 2 friends who have used their Solid State drives for several years without failure. I bought the Samsung 850 Pro 256GB and the cost was only $179.99. They guarantee it for 150TB or 10 years. Most people write less than 10GB per day and I do around 15GB a day. It is still is going to take around 30 years at this rate to reach the 150TB so I have NO fear of wearing it out. These ratings are better than any standard hard drive and the drive is almost 3 times faster. Best upgrade I have done short of a new system and for less than $200. I personally use the Solid State drive only to boot and hold programs, keeping everything else on a standard hard drive but keeping everyting on the Solid State drive will bring even more performance. With the reliability high and cost low, installing a Solid State drive is now a no brainer. Get yourself a Solid State drive and you will not believe the difference. I am not affiliated with Samsung, I only bought their drive and tell people about it as they have developed the new technology and have the best warranty so far .....
To get these fast speeds you do need SATA III ( 6Gb/s)

Drive is actually faster than the advertised 550MB/s

You should be able to. I bought my wife's iBook Air when they first came out and it came with one. I upgraded it to the 250.
I just bought a MSI Laptop with a 128GB SSD (Solid State Drive) and am amazed at the boot time. I also put all programs on the D drive in it which is 1TB and 7200rpm.

Great post. I recently put a 240gb ssd in an old Acer laptop. I am running Linux Mint 17.1 on it. Everything is almost instant. And with the Linux I have very little problems with Adware, Malware, and no viruses. I love it. The ssd really made a difference. My processor is so old that the computer is not as fast as it would be with today's processors. I am still happy that I got the ssd. I agree that if you truly want to experience newly found speed, get an ssd.
Thanks to all, I'm headed to the Mirosoft Store.
I recently built a new desktop computer on which I installed a Samsung 256Gb SSD drive as well as a conventional hard drive. Running Windows 8.1, I installed the OS and all programs on the SSD and found the boot time to be most impressive. Programs start up faster than on my four-year old Windows 7 desktop but anecdotally I haven't found programs to run any faster. Perhaps some UHHers have actually run tests on run times? The only test I ran was on a negative scan using an Epson 550 with Epson software and the results were identical. Certainly not a definitive test but my general sense is that programs run no faster.
Interested to hear experiences of others!

The programs are not going to run faster without a faster processor. The SSD allows the processor access to the data faster. Your speed increase is gained through your processor not having to sit and wait for the hard drive to provide the requested data. System boots faster and programs load faster but the actual time processing is going to be the same. If you want to process things faster then unfortunately you are going to have to buy a faster processor. I find things quicker simply because everything loads and is available faster and for less than $200. My processor is more than fast enough and this SSD simply enhanced this fact. I am editing photos, not calculating a trip to Mars. Beats $800+ for a new processor, motherboard and memory when I do not need it.
