Guess who keeps printing money or QE as they so beautifully call it. Who replaced hard earn cash with credit cards and who punishes all the retirees with zero (soon to be negative) interest on their hard earned life savings, forcing them to take risks if they want an income.

The next surprise will be the weight of the lenses. Technology has gone so far ahead that molded plastic elements can soon be made to perfection instead of heavy ground glass elements. All the billions of lenses used in cell phones are plastic, and millions of people are happy with the results they get.

The camera makers are just as contrived as cell phone makers or other electronic devices manufacturers. They already knew 12-18 months before the next 'new' model that is going to come on the market, and price them as high as the consumer can bear. Take the example of Sony RX100 series. The price between Mark I to Mark IV is hugely significant, or the profit margin of an iPhone. Everybody knows how much they cost to make and yet happily pay out the inflated price for a device which they know in a year's time, there will be a newer model, and in Samsung's case, even less than a year, while the cost of molded lenses and sensors are coming down all the time even though they are improved. Has anyone look at the back of a new TV lately. Everything needed to control the TV fits into a box size of a paperback.

Thank you so much. I knew there is always some knowledgeable enthusiast out there with a solution to every problem. I am going to order one.

Better than screwing one on is magnetically snapping one on. This thing works very well.

Agree totally with Gobuster and Jerry. Simply the best pocket camera, period. No problem at all at the short or long end. I have the RX 100 and the Mark III version, so will wait for the Mk V next year, just a marvellous camera to use and own. Only drawback is you can't screw a polarizer onto the lens.

Try also google Light L16 camera which is even more revolutionary and will be one for the future. Watch also on Vimeo - Gathering Light, which will give you an insight into how these amazing ideas are coming into fruition.
The vision is truly extraordinary and how really cheap molded perfect plastic lenses will take over as well as sensors costing only few dollars to make.

What is the total weight of your photographic gear ?
I take it you are driving all the way?

Interesting no one has mentioned the country of origin of these expensive cameras and lenses. In recent years, a lot (in fact most) of the Nikon gear is made in China, Thailand whereas most of the high end Canon stuff is still made in Japan. Whether quality control is an issue is hard to quantify. It's the same with people preferring to buy a Japanese assembled Honda rather than a China assembled vehicle, or those preferring a German assembled Mercedes vs a Thai produced model.

Find an app that lets you know what time this magic time is in your area, and go shoot just before, after and during. Play a little and you will see things with a blue hue, and a warm glow. The app that I use is Photopills, pictured below - you can see it gives me these time for any day I would like. Because it is more than sunrise and sunset times.

I like to shoot portraits during the golden hour as it produces soft shadows and warm glows. Take your girlfriend out and shoot during this time and bring the photos home to see the difference. You will be amazed at the different looks.

A good alternative to Photopills is "TPE" The photographers Ephemeris, is a free app.

That is the Wide part of the Holy Trinity, the other two being 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8. Canon has a similar trio with a L designation, all f2.8. All great lenses, once you've bought one, you'd want to buy the other 2 and will never let go, as they are as good as if not better than a lot of the primes.

Thanks again to all who have contributed. I kind of thought the big marketing machines of Canon & Nikon had a lot to do with it. As Sharpshooter and others pointed out, it is also about the total available compatible lenses and other parts of their systems that set the big 2 apart from the rest. These factors, plus their reputations of extraordinary customer service are the answer. It is however, refreshing to know that Pentax is not just a cheaper, lower quality option, but truly a great product that has some chalenges that are hard to compete with for a market share.
I think Olympus, Sony and others are probably just as good, based on the photos and comments I've seen here on UHH. I guess the bottom line is the very best camera for you is the one that fits your hands, your needs, style, and budget. Maybe this thread will end the tired Canon vs. Nikon type debates that appear here almost daily. Probably not! LOL

No doubt Canon & Nikon are preferred by pros because of their Systems and Services. The implication is, however, that a vast majority of owners of these esteemed cameras are NOT utilizing to the full extent either what the System or the Services provided. In other words, these owners are paying a more hefty price for their Canons or Nikons to subsidize those (mainly pros) who can make full and good use of what the Big 2 provide. So value wise, they are not getting the best deal when quality wise, one can have just as good or better for a lower price from say Pentax or Sony.

I would like to share the work of a very busy lady who does not have the time for post processing even in this digital age.

Given your parameters. I might suggest that a Sony RX 10 or a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 wouldn't be out of place. One has a Zeiss lens and constant f2.8 while the other has a Leica lens and even bigger zoom range, and you won't have to worry about fiddling with changing lenses. Both have very high marks from DP and other Reviews.

Hello, my name is Billie and I am a novice. Several years ago I wanted a DSLR, but didn't know much about them, The lady at the camera store sold me an Olympus Evolt e-510 because she insisted it was the best for me. I took her class, but never really got the hang of getting good photo's using manual. Basically, I used the camera less and less, because I set it on automatic and didn't get good inside photo's, and when I went on vacation I took a little pocket camera.

I am now wanting a better lens, or better camera and lens so that I can take photo's in a gym. My son plays basketball, and I really want those great action shots. A friend has a Canon Rebel that takes good photo's, but the salesperson at the camera store said that Nikon is better. And the lens she suggested was a Tamron 70-200. Now I am confused. I asked her if I could buy a new lens for my Olympus and she acted like it was a crap camera. lol.

So, could anyone tell me what I need to get good action photo's in a gym?

Thank you for your time.
Billie

The 810 has about 1/3-1/2 stop advantage, apparently, over the 800s. If high ISO is your goal, the Sony A7s is the way to go.

Agree, A7 S is now king of the low light full frame, with high DR to match.

I have just taken my new D5300 to Nikon Services to have the focusing tweeked which will take 3 days. I used it with the Nikor 18-200mm zoom for my holiday in Switzerland last 2 weeks but my pictures all came back not very sharp !! I also recently had my D300 taken in for service because of "Aperture control Problem" causing inaccurate image exposures. The Aperture control was replaced for $150.
I would therefore go for the Canon as I have also several of their cameras from PowerShot 100 to SX50 to D400 to 5D III and none have given me any trouble.
