After much input from UHH, this could be the camera that fits my pocket needs..except, three of the reviews stated that the longer the focal length, the "mushier" the images. All gave the camera back to the store.
One other review stated that the camera tends to overwork the image. Everyone else seemed to rave.
Any owners out there with comments?
Thanks.

No complaints from me. It's an amazing camera with lots of settings. I still haven't learned it 100%.

I have the original RX100 and am totally pleased with it. You can shoot RAW or with various degrees of image processing. It is a great travel camera as it fits in a pocket and can be taken anywhere. See example below, shot in very dim light, hand held, no flash. Using the superior auto function, the camera took about 6 rapid shots and combined them in camera! The RX100 is simply the best point and shoot camera I've ever used, and I've used a bunch of them.

You reiterated some of the pluses that are influencing me, but you did not address the con; is the image at full extension focal length mushy?
Thanks

Sorry about that, here are two examples shot at full extension. I think it does lose a bit of sharpness but still are decent. My model does have a bit more zoom than the new ones, they only zoom to 25.7mm but at f2.8 vs. 37.1 and f4.9 for mine. Hope this info helps. BTW, the original RX100 is still available new for $398!

Images look acceptable, but I can see that enlarging could bring out deficiencies. I have to remember the reason I'm considering
this camera and that trade-offs are a given.
Now, another question as long as you're at it. You mentioned the early model @$398. Are there major improvements with the new model over yours? Are they worth $500?
Thanks a lot for taking the time with this subject, btw.

No problem, glad to help. The main differences are that the IV model has a pop up EVF, (a nice feature, especially when shooting in bright sunlight), a flip out LCD screen (nice to have) and a backlit sensor (allows for 4k movies, 16 fps still shooting and seemingly better low light/high ISO performance). I have not had a chance to use one so can't comment on the performance. So far, I'm pleased with my RX100 and have not been inclined to shell out the the fairly hefty price for the new IV. Also, I like the extra zoom range of mine, 37.1 to 25.7mm is a fair difference and quite useful at times. I don't shoot many movies and have a full frame DSLR for critical work, but I have made 16 x 20 prints from the RX and they are hanging on my wall!

Based on the value of the extra features, you will have to judge whether the IV is worth $500 more. Either way, you will be getting an exceptional small camera.

I have the RX100 III and have had no problems using the lens at its full extension.

Agree totally with Gobuster and Jerry. Simply the best pocket camera, period. No problem at all at the short or long end. I have the RX 100 and the Mark III version, so will wait for the Mk V next year, just a marvellous camera to use and own. Only drawback is you can't screw a polarizer onto the lens.

I use the RX100 II because it will allow me to add a flash to the shoe atop the camera. Love it, best pocket camera made.

Hi - I have had the RX 100 MI, MII, and now I have MIV.. None of these camera have ever taken a Mushy shot - I mean the zoom is not that long - so I really hardly even use it. But when I do - they images are still amazing. I take this camera with me to parties - and I'm always shocked at how good the pictures are in the terrible light and for the amounts of drinks I have had.
I love to get new toys so that is why I got the mIV, and I love the fully articulating screen, and the viewfinder. BUT the mI was probably one of my favorite cameras of all time. Gorgeous GORGEOUS pictures and I dropped it down a flight of cement stairs in a parking garage once -- and it was FINE!!
If you don't care about the view finder and selfie screen - the MI is perfect.

I have looked the RX100 line and if I was going to get one, I would ge the RX100ii because it has a hot shoe for flash.
