Lighting used was a small table lamp, no flash.

I found some basic photography assignments I will start doing at least 2 - 3 times a week.

Assignment #1

Pick a mundane object and make it look interesting. (Their was a little more to it, but that was the basic concept. Basically it was vague in the PP part, so I went beyond my comfort zone, which is WHY I am doing assignments I can find.)

So this is what I did:

I set my camera for Exposure bracketing on a tripod with stabilizer set to off. I used the 3 shots and ran them through PS5 HDR Pro . . . I wasn't looking to make it "look" HDR, I just wanted to experiment. The final I cropped to 8x10.

My brother-in-law said it looks like something he'd see on a big sign in a hardware store. :)

I am curious as to any professional observations. I will be soon getting a basic studio lighting kit to set up a studio as I plan shoot people and objects. My current setup is nothing, or anything. So I'm trying things now in small steps to achieve something similar to that environment.

This is my result:
4.0 sec at f/16, 400 ISO, 29mm br Canon T2i, EF-S ... (show quote)

My advice, go with your heart. I would rather be wrong for trying, than never sure if I could have been good at something I didn't even attempt. I could see if you were new and looking at buying a studio, but it's just a "basic: studio lighting kit.

Good for you, go for it, and Good Luck!

First, Old Timer I will check all of those things, thanks you.

emrob62, we do have a good Chamber of Commerce so I'll talk with them too. I don't know if I am "The" most interesting man in the world, and I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I drink Dos Equis. Stay thirsty my friend!

And finaly, MWAC, We don't have a HOA here so I should be OK. Where I live, pretty much anything goes!

Thanks again to all of you, it's much appreciated.

Do any of you know what, if any, permits, licenses, etc. are required to start a photography business in Massachusetts?

I'm looking to start a product photography business out of my home (the actual photography would be at the clients place of business of recommended site), and was curious if anyone else has already gone though this, or does it not differ from any other type of home based photography business?

Also, can anyone recommend any down-loadable contract or agreements for this type of work? I am only in the planning stages, but due to recent events at home, I need to get this going as quickly as possible.

Any and all responses would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Does anyone have any advice on how to try to get a photo published? Where or what channels to go through?

I have been published already. What type of media would you like to be published in? Magazine, Newspaper, Website?
I have had my work published in a trade magazine and also in the local newspaper. My work is also on a couple of websites currently.

Let me know and I would be more than happy to walk you through the steps that I have taken to get published.

As far as composition goes, I gotta go with #2.
The leading line is pleasing. The color alternations keep your eye moving and the cop and perspective fill the frame and cut the viewer's field in a complimentary way.

Thank you for your comments. That was my favorite also.
Do you think the first one is too busy? Too much in the background? What I liked about that one was the way the light looked on the clothes.

If you're already in PhotoShop, just blur the background in #1 and see how that works. I really like #2, I think the composition is right on, and the colors keep you interested. Nice job!

Try as I may my timing is just not right. The birds took off and I tried panning to catch them in flight. This was the fourth in a series I took. I find this frustrating . This was a late day shot 3:45pm. More a shot of opportunity and I won't give up till I get it right . So give me some tips on catching a flock taking off or flying by.

If your camera has a setting for "Sports" try using that. It won't shoot in RAW, but its better than missing the shot. Afterwards, look at the setting the camera picked, and you can try those setting in TV mode yourself if the shot ever comes up again. You should also have your auto focus set to Al SERVO.

I've been using an aftermarket battery that I got through Amazon for over a year (I have a Canon Rebel) and it works every bit as well as the battery I got with my camera.

We can all continue to learn, however, you're obviously a good student. Very nice shots.

Somebody beat me to the question. What on earth does one feed a squirrel to make him weigh 20 pounds? Well, he LOOKS like it!

I have three bird feeders, and one is black sunflower seed. The squirrels stuff themselves regularly. I've tried everything (no such thing as squirrel proof) to stop them, but to no avail. So, if you can't beat them, take advantage of the situation.

I hope you don't mind, but I saw the other reply, and I too was curious how this would look without the small stick crossing in front of the Hawk's face. I tried a very quick edit, and here's the result.
