I put a soligar zoom lens the wrong way on a Nikon FA film camera and can't get it off. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

So dropping your high quality, high priced lens on the ground is the way to improve technique and artistic vision. I'll have to try that.

Oh Hell No. I could never afford that!

I apologize, I did not mean to offend and it certainly was not directed at you or anyone else specifically. It was meant as a general comment or tantrum (my bad!).

Your point about experience is certainly understood and appreciated. Most of what I learn is garnered from the rich detailed discussions here.

Yet, often original questions seem to get lost in the subsequent discussion. There are some (NOT YOU and not the posters at the time of my original ill-thought comment) who appear to view any question or subject as an opportunity to enhance their self image. This often takes form as condescending, bloviating and off point nonsense.

My response was knee jerk endorsement of the sentiment expressed and very poorly timed.

For my photo journey this blog is priceless. There may be worts and blemishes but this is an incredible site!

Longer is better. My go to is 45mm or 85mm, and I've used up to 200mm. The key is to get comfortable with stitching panos. No extension distortion, no volume deformation, less barrel distortion, usually more even illumination across the image field, etc. If you need wider and/or taller field of view, you just take mote shots. If you need more depth of field, you can shoot a focus stack. A focus stacked pano has more detail (pixels) and better image quality. It's a little more work, but totally worth it.

No the mistake is all yours. OP stated multiple lenses.

Newbie here. So here is my first question: why are tripods so expensive?

For example, I can buy a reasonable camera for about $1,000. This is a piece of equipment with sophisticate mechanics and electronics, controlled by advanced software. It also comes with a lens with advanced optics.

Then if I want to buy a tripod to go with my camera, I am expected to spend in the range of $500 and up. Mind you, a tripod has no sophisticate mechanics and no electronics at all, no software, no optics. It's just some mechanical parts, not even too advance in design.

So why do tripods cost so much, compared to cameras?

You are right. Far too expensive for the job they do; or, are they. Of course you can buy a tripod for $20, and you get, to belabor the cliche, well, you get what you pay for. Purists and professionals demand the very best for stability's sake. I am lousy at taking sharp pictures so on most of my outings into the "wild" and specially with a "long" lens I do require a tripod, and I've had a few. The theory goes that metal tripod legs have a tendency to easily vibrate as opposed to carbon fiber legs which theoretically tend to dampen vibrations.

I let you in on a secret, I haven't seen the difference between metal (aluminum mostly) and carbon fiber, as far as vibration goes. But then again, what do I know? For me is the weight of the tripod that I seek to remedy, and for that I must go with carbon fiber. I like my tripods sturdy, and that adds weight. I use Benro products and I am happy with them. To your question, tripods are expensive because you need them. Look around, if you have the money you can buy Gitzo, RRS, ProMediaGear, and other highly price-inflated tripods. For my money, if you look and research you can get the same quality for half the price, and half the price on a good tripod still puts a dent on your wallet. Besides the above mentioned brands, consider Benro, Induro, Manfrotto, etc.

Then again, depending in the type of photography you do, you may not need a tripod.

Welcome to hedgehog. Happy shooting.

Or try this one on - I take a good photograph. One of you expert PP'ers turns it into a great, award-winning photograph. Whose photograph is it?

Yours, or did you give her permission to work on your photo and publish as his?

You are not the first - or the 50th - to voice this "concern" on this forum. Apparently you (and all who wrote the same thing before you) feel there is only one correct way to shoot or edit photos and that is your way. Why can't folks pursue and enjoy this hobby in whatever way they choose?

I am with you Linda. Ask anyone who has developed their own photographs, the amount of post production work that took place in the dark room; filters, variable development times, paper media types, etc, etc, just to try to achieve that vision, that art. All the great photographers put in that post time. Hey, thanks for software that gives me the ability to pursue that vision. There is no wrong way, no right way. It all depends what you want to achieve.

Can and should are clearly not different sides of the same coin ...

I'll revisit this with info as to effects using the Kenko extenders with the 70-300. It is true that the 70-300 does not appear on the Canon chart as being compatible with extenders. By the way, and I may be repeating the obvious, the 135mm limitation is applied to primes, TP's and zooms can use the extenders at below 100mm.

To me, as long as you are not hurting your equipment, all is fair in the pursuit of that masterpiece.

Hey Bob, SS may be a bit delayed in his response. With a 5DIV and not money limit, the 24-70 f/2.8L II is the best choice. It's as sharp as Canon's primes at the same focal lengths and apertures. Your high MP sensor provides options for cropping that may offset the missing focal length offered by the 24-105 II. The 24-70 II offers maximum image quality in all situations, and particularly in low light if you're shooting f/2.8 to f/4. The 24-70 f/4L IS and the 24-105 f/4L IS II are both excellent performers, enhanced by IS.

You asked about an extender, but I'm unsure of the purpose of this question. The Canon 1.4x and 2x extenders cannot be physically attached to any of the 24-xx zooms nor any EF-S lens being discussed.

But the Kenko extenders can, just get the GDX models. Having said that, be aware that an EF-S lens attached to a full frame through the GDX Kenko, will always give you some "unwanted" vignette, specially at the widest angles.

I personally use Benro tripods and a Sirui Monopod. The Benro's are high quality at a reasonable cost and very sturdy. Another one to look up is Nest tripods, also an excellent choice.

I also use Benro tripods. Their top tripods, for the money, although a bit heavier, are the equals of Really Right Stuff and Gitzos, and did I mention the price?
Tripod heads, I use a Really Right Stuff. No argument.
