One very important point I feel you left out: Learn to hold the camera properly - weight of camera and lens should be supported by the left hand, while the right hand should remain fairly loose and relaxed. With a little practice, this technique can cut down on camera shake significantly!

Whenever I go to tourist sites, I can't help but notice how the majority of photographers are gripping the camera really tight with their right hand when they are taking a picture, using it instead of the left hand to support much of the weight. Unfortunately, most photography tutorials seem to rarely touch upon the subject of how to actually hold a camera to reduce camera shake. Although monopods and tripods obviously are very effective, they are not always practical to carry along or set up.

Not just newcomers are grabbing the grip. So often I hear people say here they need a large body to "balance" a long lens .... if they were using left hand to support the lens, then "balance" wouldn't have been an issue.

This is not going to be a rant about Mac vs Windows, but I will say that the money I've saved over the years by purchasing rock-solid, serviceable and easily upgradeable PC equipment has made it possible to buy at least 1 amazing lens - my 600mmF4 - or a half dozen similarly amazing lenses that equal the cost of the big one. I don't need to be trendy or fashionable, I just need a computer I can rely on. So far, I haven't been let down.

There's more than one way to accomplish that task. When our Windows computer died, my daughter took her boyfriend's retired gaming computer {case &motherboard} added keyboard, mouse, and display from our {old dead} computer, purchased a new hard-drive ... and we have the Linux computer I'm using to enter this. It turns out that running gimp doesn't required nearly as much "horsepower" as gaming does.

1. You download the file (if available for the image) and read the exif file using PS or an appropriate app. I have a reader loaded on my iPad.

With Windows, you can right click on a photo to get it's "properties". The "detail" tab will contain much of the EXIF data {if no one has removed them}

Can this be used with Back Button Focus?

You keep sound on, or do you use visual indication that accompanies "beep"? The first thing I do with a camera is to turn the sounds off - I don't want to call attention to myself nor to spook animals.

After many years, about 19, I finally made the transition from my Olympus C-5050 to a new Canon 6Ti, and I can't wait to get started. DSLR's have progressed quite a bit since I first used a Kodak DCS-100. A long story and not worth going into at the moment. Not only that but I also ordered a new MacBook Air, 13" with the max amount of 8 Gb RAM and a 512Gb SSD. My current MacBook is a late 2009 and has just about reached the end of it's life. I will be setting it up as if I were going to sell it and with a minimum amount, I will turn it into a Windows machine so that I can use it in the ham shack. Wish me luck:) I hope to be posting stuff soon!!

A .... in the age of film I took multiple shots to make sure my {Kodachrome} exposure was correct - now I take many fewer because just a glance will answer the question.

In 2003 my family was moving to a small town in Kansas, when my wife showed me pictures of a house. I told her we had already looked at that house - and when I further described it she did use the word "LIE".

The new section is a WILD success. Many postings quickly get 2000 views and several pages of participation. I'm in two other special sections and you can hear the paint drying on the walls. Not so in the new section.
I would have never guessed that there were so many nude aficionados among the Hogs.
Now back to sneaking in! There are WAY to many views in a very short time to be entirely from subscribed users. I just assume there are a LOT of closet participants. Do you view but have never left a comment. Yes, leaving a comment will invariably blow the door right of the closet!! LoL
I don't expect anybody to identify themselves....., but hey, maybe we can double our closet readership with a little awareness that the nude section exists! And some out of closet participation as well.
This is an invitation to tell others if you like the new section or don't. Could it be better, sure.
I'd like to see it become educational and the go-to place for lighting and posing as well as pretty pictures as the section matures.
What do you think???
So come one, come all and enjoy a little skin...., we do, after-all, all have skin!!! LoL

We could always wander over to that 20-page thread that consists solely of people saying AYE or NAY. Now that looks like fun times!

I have chosen to skip that thread - any one word answer I gave would be misleading.

Thank you for sharing. I have down loaded this app and the text file attached says it will not work on either the 7D Mk II or the 5D Mk IV, due to the unique firmware of these cameras. It just gives you a “CAMERA NOT CONNECTED” error message. When you access the camera through Windows File Explorer , it sees the camera and the files on the memory chips. It seems to work fine with earlier Canon Cameras.

I took the camera to my local Canon Dealer, and he got the shutter count (15,500) for me, which was higher than i thought it was. This camera is now listed for sale here on UHH.

Thanks, again, for trying on my behalf.

David

Was the number assigned to the last image taken that large, or was it a smaller number?

I figured trying to find a parking place would be a big problem so will rely on public transportation.

Smart! My wife was raised in Brooklyn, so we drove there at least once a year for twenty years {until her Dad died and her Mom moved to FL}. I drove into what locals call "the city" once - when her sister got married {in a Greenwich Village loft}. Never again!!

added comment: even driving in Brooklyn is no fun. For one thing, there is no available street parking, so delivery trucks {to grocery store or brown truck presumably delivering camera gear} just stop in the middle of the street. After my parents visited her parents, my Dad asked "Don't they have laws against double parking?" Answer: "Yes .... so?"

So I received an sigma 18-125mm f3.8-5.6 DC HSM lens today. The kit lens has no issue with focusing however the sigma lens will not focus using the LCD screen instead of the eye viewer (forgive me if I do not use the right terminology, I am new to DSLRs and trying to learn. So i will not be offended if you correct me). I was wondering if this is a defective lens or am I not using the right setting etc. I am using a pentax K-s1 and the sigma is for a pentax. the focus will go in and out of focus and finally settle out of focus. obviously, at this point i can not take a picture while using the lcd screen. However when using the eye view, it will focus in just fine. any idea?

The Pentax-DA f/3.5-5.6 18-135mm ED AL DC (IF) WR is a really good lens, and costs "only" $400. It was the first lens I purchased after getting my K-30, and the lens normally on it. Get it instead!

Focal lengths are virtual (retro focus) or actual depending upon the design. Theoretically 50mm is the distance from the rear element to the “film or sensor” plane.

What people usually talk about is distance from the mount {where lens is attached to camera} to the sensor.

First of all, I NEVER take my gear out in the rain or snow, NEVER. If someone wants to take their gear out and have it rained on or put a hose to that's OK for them, but I would never even consider it. Yes, my gear is all weather sealed except for my Nikon 200-500. I carry a plastic bag from the grocery store for the chance it might rain. Yes, I understand that I can take my gear out in the rain and snow, but I don't.

I show respect for my Pentax equipment by using it to its fullest. I have taken it out in snow and rain because that is where the pictures are.

added: During last year's hurricane season, someone wondered why most images shared here are taken during good weather. Your post may help to explain that.

Bring your tripod and ND filter to Times Square, once during daytime and once during night. Shoot some very long exposures and stitch them together to see if you can get a photo where no people are seen.

Times Square without people is a travesty!!
