Help: new sigma lens issues with auto-focus

So I received an sigma 18-125mm f3.8-5.6 DC HSM lens today. The kit lens has no issue with focusing however the sigma lens will not focus using the LCD screen instead of the eye viewer (forgive me if I do not use the right terminology, I am new to DSLRs and trying to learn. So i will not be offended if you correct me). I was wondering if this is a defective lens or am I not using the right setting etc. I am using a pentax K-s1 and the sigma is for a pentax. the focus will go in and out of focus and finally settle out of focus. obviously, at this point i can not take a picture while using the lcd screen. However when using the eye view, it will focus in just fine. any idea?

JK, a kit lens is a lens that is bundled with a camera that is low cost, the body made of plastic and quite low cost. The Sigma is not low cost at $400 - it's a little better than a kit lens.

As has been the case with many Sigma lenses, live-view auto focus often doesn't work. Sometimes newer lenses can be reprogrammed (firmware update performed by Sigma) to work with cameras in live view. I have two Sigma lenses that can't focus and can't be updated.

Return the lens, it is a Sigma! Why put that on a Pentax? Stick with Pentax lenses.

The OP didn't refer to the Sigma as a kit lens.

I should not post anything before my second cup of coffee. . .

You're right.

Don't worry. I had to double check the post after reading yours in case I was the one in the wrong.

The Pentax-DA f/3.5-5.6 18-135mm ED AL DC (IF) WR is a really good lens, and costs "only" $400. It was the first lens I purchased after getting my K-30, and the lens normally on it. Get it instead!

I read what was written and made no inferences, but took it at face value.

Silly me.

I have been much sillier on many, many occasions. 😜

Listen to the wise REHESS and replace your Sigma with the
Pentax 18-135mm. It is truly an excellent lens. Superb build and WR (weather resistant - you don’t want to know the rain and snow storms mine has weathered (pun intended). Compact. Excellent optics. The same price range as what you purchased.
Like REHESS, of my 10 or more Pentax lenses the 18-135mm sits on my camera as my default walkabout.
