The 17-55 is going to be a chuck of change, but worth it. I love mine. The 2 lenses I use the most are the 17-55 and my 28-300.
Both are Nikon lenses though, so they were pricy. :(
!7-55 $1200
28-300 $900
JUST DON'T TELL THE WIFE, IT WORKS FOR ME :)
Someone on another site always says: I hope my wife doesn't sell all my gear for what I told her I payed for it when I die. :)

I agree with ERV, The Nikon 17-55 is an excellent lens. Another choice is the Tamron 17-50 2.8. That lens has taken over and lives on my camera. I have the older model without VR, much lighter and a bit smaller than the Nikon, tack on with sharpness and crispness as the Nikon was. I was very lucky to get a good Tamron copy from the beginning. Go to a good camera store and talk with them, and compare what feels good to you and the quality of pics you get. They might even rent/loan you a couple of lens to try for a few days days. Good luck.

I have an 8GB Sandisk card in my Sony 500.
After a days shoot I save my shots to iPhoto and Picasa then to an external harddrive as back-up. Once I'm sure everything is safe in a couple of other places, I clear the card and get ready for the next day.
Is this a good practice, or will the quality of my pictures eventually go down as the age of the card increases?
Put another way, should I treat my sdhc cards as another backup medium and not try to "re-use" them until a problem arises?
Hope this makes sense.
Any and all comments greatly appreciated.

Sandisk is a good card, that brand is all I have used for years with no problems. I down load them when I have completed a shoot, and prepare for the next day. I will use 2 and 4 GB cards, and carry several re-loading as they become full. Reason is, if for some unfortinate reason your larger card becomes corrupt, you may have a problem retreving your days of many shots, where as with several smaller cards, you have not lost everything. I don't shoot video, so this might not apply to those that do.

I have the PocketWizard Mini TT1 transmitter with the PocketWizard Flex TT5 transceivers used with SB 800 flashes, great for off camera shots. No "line of site" issues here, these devices use radio signal. There is also a controller that attaches on your transmitter that allows you to adjust the flash out put from your camera instead of having to go to each flash and adjust them seperately. Great feature if your flashes are mounted on high light stands, or held by an assistant. Beware...these are not cheap.

I've been here for a while; I was probably one of the 'original lurkers' before I made up my mind to actually join this forum. I'm not even going to bother to go read these posts you have now made famous.

I find that 99 1/100% of the people here are fine and decent people and they are the ones I turn to for advice, friendship and a sense of family I have found no where else on-line. If you managed to find the one bad apple, I suggest you make a note of his identity and avoid his posts from now on.

Rather than bring attention to something that is inevitable in a venue like this, start your own thread with a good and decent theme and fight back in a constructive way rather than than to rant and rave here about something you can't stop here.

I know the admin here is attentive and addresses issues in a timely manner and you could have contacted him with your concerns and not come running here like you found the bad boys on the playground. You should take your complaints to the person who can do something about it.

There is a person behind each one of these posts; some are old, some young, some professionals and a lot of amateurs, but a lot of them are worth knowing, even if it's only through this forum. You, sir, I would not add to that list. My redneck friends would call you a whiny little girl and I say you all, profane posters and whiners, need to grow up.

The real world is not perfect. What's real are the folks here at The Hog and if you can't run with the big dogs......the porch awaits.

I reside not far from my homested of Dearborn Michigan. Love trains, trying to dig up my photos from yesteryear...NYC Aero Train, GP 7's, F7's F8"s NW switchers etc. I know I still have flattened out pennies I taped on the tracks from a Detroit to Chicago freight run. Fun times and nobody got hurt, even when I jumped on a slow moving freight in West Dearborn and jumped off again in Ypsilanti as it slowed down past the train station nearing Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area. I was ten to twelve years old then, had my Kodak box camera, not old enough to have fear, respeceted the big trains/ trusted no strangers and I could run like hell if I had to.

I have always loved the "Cab Forward" Southern Pacific. Great photographs. The WP F3 (?) are remembered, as well as the ventige Steamers. Growing up in east and west Dearborn Michigan, I was fortunate to experence the transition from steam to diesel, living not far from the New York Central, (formal Michigal Central) main lines. Enjoyed your photos, have you any more?

Definition: overly concerned with detail; not understanding the whole situation

Explanation: Used when expressing that a person is focusing too much on specific problems and is missing the point

Examples: I'm afraid you can't see the forest for the trees. - He often can't see the forest for the trees and needs to have the most relevant points explained to him.
